The University of New Mexico worn down the Eastern New Mexico Zias in a 98-66 exhibition victory today in front of an announced crowd of 7,555 at The Pit. Dionne Marsh led the Lobos with 20 points and added six rebounds. Amy Beggin continued her steady play with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 10 assists. UNM started the game on a 9-0 run but Eastern New Mexico used its long-range shooting to keep the deficit close in the first half.
UNM spent most of the first half at the free-throw line, connecting on 20-of-21 attempts. ENMU countered with 3-pointers, hitting five in the first half.
The Lobos took a 42-35 advantage into intermission.
UNM was led in the first half by Amy Beggin, who had nine points and four assists. Dionne Marsh chipped in eight points and Brandi Kimble had six.
ENMU had 11 different players score in the first half, led by six points from Cat Clay on a pair of 3-pointers.

Lobos did not seem as focused in the first half as they did against the Chinese team. I think they were spoken to at halftime. Some great play from the freshmen. Everyone played and everyone scored.

Gotta give enmu credit. They played tough and hard, never giving up. Although I never really doubted the outcome of the game enmu came back several times. It was closer then the final score would indicate.
As to the Lobos, I thought we played more like a young team than our first exhibition. Showed some inconsistency, and some lack of disipline, even by some of our juniors and seniors. Our posts pulling the ball down and allowing enmu's guards to tie up the ball and such. Also, seemed an issue to get good outside shooting this game. Defense was spoty I thought. Giving up 66 to a div 2 team is questionable when compared to what are now "normal" Lobo standards. Just a hunch, but I think we may be a little up and down this year with all of our youth. Jessica still impressed me, and Best had a much better game. I think she will continue to develop. I will enjoy watching this team develop.
Anyone hear the coaches talk after the game, I would love to know his thoughts. :-)
Go Lobos!

Best had a much better game.
That's good to hear she passed the eye test. Her box score was much better than the previous game. She only took two shots, but had 4 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block and only 1 turnover. That's a marked improvement! :D
Amy had a great box, 19 points (5-11), 10 assists, 7 rebounds, 1 steal and only 1 turnover!!! :>
That's a hell of a box score. It appears, she will be a major contributor this year in all phases of the game. If she keeps acting like Steve Nash, she could really help this team become much better.
47.8% overall shooting for the team is also encouraging. They'll get a real nice test this weekend and will need to play hard for three games and use the full bench to keep fresh. I can't wait. :D

I certainly hope a certain someone (who shall remain nameless) is eating some major crow!!! That "pendejo" said that Amy was a bad recruit by Coach Flanagan and only showed how "badly" he recruited. Ummm, yeah...right (note sarcasm!!!) :D

that certain someone has crawled under a rock where he lives with the rest of the trolls. We can only hope he stays there for the rest of the season.

General thoughts on several topics brought up here:
1. Tx, you are right, there is sometimes a difference between eye test and box score. Some of the things I really like to see never show up in the box score. Hustle, determination, confidence, good defense, or even getting position for rebounding does not always show up. The biggest difference in Best, imho, seemed to be her confidence level. Game 1, she looked like a deer in the headlights. Game 2, she seemed much more confident, and I expect her to grow from here. That is one of the great things about this team, is watching 10 (9 right now) freshmen/sophmores
2. There has been many of have hammered Flan for not recruiting NM kids. Watching enmu and UNM was kind of sad to see the difference in talent level between some of the best NM kids we had and the Lobos. Not that 1 or 2 of the enmu girls might not make it with UNM, but in general the talent level was fairly wide. enmu never gave up, and played hard all night, but there is a difference. I hope the girls on enmu work really hard and find a great deal of success. Hard work can bring about the needed developement. However, it does kind of show where NM girls basketball is at compared to some other places in the country.
3. Amy is very solid, and will be much needed/used this year. She is simply awesome. Easy to take her, Brandi and Dionne for granted.

No doubt! What is important about those three is that they comprise a solid core around which other players can contribute. The one I am watching is Brandi. To me, she is the key to being able to score when they need a bucket. She has to be able to hit the three, drive to the bucket and/or dish to Dionne. Dionne is Dionne and Amy appears ready to lead the floor and knock down threes. So, of the Big Three, Brandi is the key in-so-far as stepping-up and rounding out the core of the offense.
The 3 and 5 look to be carried out by committee. Several players have the potential to contribute significantly and at least one of them could turn into a solid starter. I think Best will do a good job backing the point and 2 slots. We have three solid 3's, two of whom can even play the 2. The post position has three seemingly equal options with three different styles of defense and offense.
I can see why Flan is having fun with this year's team.

The value of having a long-term coach is that he knows how to recruit players who have the potential to excel at different phases of the game. He bases his recruiting on the system he has developed and continues to refine. Players like these could get lost in "big" programs. But at UNM they have an opportunity coupled with extremely skilled coaching. Consequently, a player like Amy comes into the program and after just one season under her belt she is capable of handling the team with the same level of control as her amazingly great predecesors. Incidently, like her immediate predecesor, Amy had a very good frosh year while backing up an all-time conference great!
In any program at any level, some players are not going to work out as hoped. Flan has had his share of "flops", but you have to admit that his system is processing more and more talented players each year. IMHO, this could be the most talented team he has ever had. Young but talented. And deep. Flan has more opportunities for players to make significant impacts at certain aspects of the game. If he can figure a good flow for 10 players who each perform well at the right things at the right time, another MWC title is in the offing . . . despite the youth of the team.
Scarecrow knows nothing about bball. He understands nothing of building something, taking care of it and watching it grow. Scarecrow could never understand how Flan is doing more than building a winning program. He is building a legacy that will redound back to UNM for decades. Women like K. Kern, J. Adams, C. Grear, A. Garcek, M. Moore and others have and will spread a little bit of New Mexico into women's bball long after Flan has retired. That's another benefit of a coach who looks for SMART students, they tend to excel at life.
