Anyone have any info on the softball team at UNM? I am looking to move back to Albuquerque, am currently a baseball hitting coach at a University here in OKC but am thinking of applying for a position there that was recently posted..

Hey Buddy,
I have a 10 year old girl playing softball and a 12 boy in baseball. Since you have experience as a hitting coach I have a question for you. I have become an expert of sorts teaching my son to hit, however, several people/coaches have told me that you can not use the same technique in softball to hit that you do in baseball because the pitcher is so much closer (shorten the swing, don't have the bat as far back, swing with mostly your arms instead of your hips.....). Is that true or is it fundamentally the same?

Depends on the individual but to be honest all the girls I have worked with I teach them to "swing" and not slap at the ball. When coaches tell you to shorten it up just ask them how that is so different than baseball? So in baseball you want your swing to be longer and slower?? The "arms" swing can shorten you up but like you said you sacrafice alot by losing power.. Personally I would just make sure the softball swing is compact and short but you do not have to simply "arm slap" at the ball to force contact.. You can learn how to "swing." Just my thoughts.. Others may differ..
