He has talked about the returning players. Said the staff is impressed with the conditioning of them. JR is doing great, Farris is the most pleasant surprise.

Was asked about Gary and said he would go through a wall for you. Said Lobo fans are going to love watching him. Was also asked about a Big 10 mentality for the Lobos. He said defensively he likes that, but not offensively. He wants to get it up and down the court a little.

Said he won't do body bag games. He'll pllay anyone, but they have to come back to the Pit. Said there's going to be some great things done to the Pit in the next 3 or 4 years and it will be a state of the art facility.

Rick, one minor correction. He said Hobson would likely end up going to a JC.

for the info, it's always nice to hear what he thinks. Really nice to hear Daniel is a "good" surprise. It could be a breakout year for Daniel with all the other bigs around, I hope so.
Hate it that Hobson won't be here but still think we will contend, this year!

Another thing he said that kind of shocked me is when he said that "we not that big this year". Maybe im am just used to the past but I consider us a "big" team! LoL My,my, how things have changed.

2.5 cents here.

I am really happy about DF. He and Prentice are my two favs right now. I hope they both have breakout years.

Hobson not making it is a disappointement. I had looked forward to seeing him in Lobo red. You don't run into skilled 6'6/7" guards like him every day. He could have been a major asset.

We are still not that big. We are bigger than last year, and more experienced, although still very inexperienced. Daniel is not huge compared to many 5's. Monquel is big, and will see a lot of time I think, as will Harris. The middle may still prove to be our weakness, but it is deeper than last year, and if chemistry fires right with the rest of the team, we could have something good here. If it is bickering and infighting again, it could still be a long year. I am hoping for the former!

Go Lobos!

I thought Alford's "tone" about Hobson was insightful.

He flat out said that Hobson didn't get his paperwork into the Clearinghouse on time and that is why the decision is delayed. Me thinks Alford doesn't like laziness or procrastination!

While he DID say that if Hobson goes JC, we may not be still be interested in 2 years, he did leave the possibility open (in the last phone question) that Hobson could also be eligible for second semester. But I'm not sure Alford is still interested, because he just didn't sound too committed to Hobson anymore. Very interesting.

Lots left between the lines there.............

I think Darrington may be history.

I agree with you 100%. Sounds like someone on the other end was really lackadaisical. I bet if he was cleared to play that we would take him no doubt but it sounds like Hobson didn't live up to his end of the billing. In the end its going to be his loss for the will forever hurt his education.

RPS, is he also a player?

Being a good role player would be great. Defense, rebounding, and a few putbacks would be great.

I saw Roman and Jamaal and another player at Saggio's Sunday evening.......
didn't know who the other guy was - but he was about 2" taller than Roman and VERY WIDE.
Wearing glasses, and did I mention that he was VERY WIDE ????????
That was one big dude.

If he was wide then that was Harris. He's built like a tree trunk from the waist down. No moving that guy!

Ask Yakka, the boy can play! He's one that's not getting a lot of attention but I've heard a lot of good things about him.

OK RPS, sounds like you have seen Harris in action. I was not expecting much because his JC numbers did not seem that great, and the step to div 1 is usually a tough transition. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to what we can expect from Harris (and Monquel if you have seen him) this year against good competition. To me, I thought we had added depth with our bigs, but not necessarly the abilities we would need long term. I thought Faris would step up big this year, and that Monquel and Harris would aid in the effort underneath. It sounds like Harris (and Monquel???) could be the star of a few games this season? Please fill me in.

Hobson had the requisite test scores to get in. He just needed to take care of some business this summer and didn't get it done. He obviously has the intelligence, but somehow is lacking in motivation or sense of urgency. Contrast that to Monquel who had to go thru hell and back to get all 18 credits this Summer. He was completely committed to making it happen and he succeeded.

As talented as Hobson is, I'm with SA on this one - time to let someone else worry about whether he's going to show up. Time to move on.

My only problem with our new bigs is their conditioning. I saw them in a shrits/skins and all 3 new big guys are carring a lot of extra around the middle. Harris is the most polished and has the smallest "tube" around the gut but the biggest butt. He will not be moved.

I will defer to Yakka on this. He's seen both play a few times so he knows about them a lot more than me. From what I'm hearing Harris is going to the guy that comes out of nowhere. I haven't heard much on Monquel. I know he's working hard and needs to get stronger before the season.

That's not a bad thing. You don't want your players to come in in shape but not out of shape that they never get their weight down. There's a fine line. You don't want them to come in in great shape because there's the fear of them "peaking" too soon and that their body might not make it for the long haul.

I was told that most were out of shape but that was ok with them and that there won't be a problem in 6 weeks. I've heard a few horror storys about Alfords practices! LoL were talking weight bags for each player, hockey sticks to bang them when they are running drills..... You know, the normal stuff! LoL

Lobodawg92,

There's a reason why Coach Alford brought in both Harris and Pegues. Harris is a beast and very athletic. Saw him play a few times last year...he can ball. Harris is probably more developed than Pegues. His overall game is far better. Pegues has a lot of upside to his game. He's athletic big man who can run the floor...his biggest weakeness is he's not that strong. Once he develops his strength a little more he's going to be a force. Harris a beast on the boards...he's hard to move out of the paint.

maybe mcdonald was waiting to see if hobson was going to be here before he wants to commit...maybe he thought they would be playing the same spot...or maybe j brown was thinking the same.

Coach stated that we have big talent coming in for '08 and '09 (or that the recruiting for those years is going very well). Consequently, there may not be a place for Hobson in two years. I'd bet the farm that if Hobson isn't able to sneak into UNM for the spring semester, then you will never see him as a Lobo.

We know that he couldn't discuss any of our recruits, but he also didn't say anything about our new players, preferring to talk about the returning players. I think that Ian should have specifically asked about the 5 new Lobos.

Maybe it’s just coincidence, but listening to this and reading the stuff about UNLV tells me that Huss may still be involved somehow.

I can't wait to see Harris and Pegues. We haven't had that kind of size in a long time. With Daniel, we will be a very different team inside.

Yeah, I heard the interview as well at work.
SA speaks really well in front of media. I don't know what the Iowa fans were complaining about.

Overall, SA is still excited as hell to be here. He did say that his coaching staff was awesome, and that they are not looking to leave anytime soon. FWIW.

Re: Hobson
I also agree on SA's wods on Darrington. SA was asked twice about DH, and both time he stated respectfully and short that DH didn't get his paperwork in time. He assumed JC was the possible route, but didn't rule out coming in second semester. SA didn't sound very up beat, and spoke as if there wouldn't be any interst two years from now.

I'm excited to have SA here, I think he will do wonders here. Kreb's and SA, seem to really be into something special here. It kinda makes me wonder about Rocky.

Would you be upbeat if you were Alford about Hobson Philly? Darrington Dropped the ball...the kid lacks motivation. Darrington could get to UNM in the second semester without going to a JC.

No I wouldn't.
And I agree with eveyone here that DH, if thats the truth, failed to live up to his end of the bargain. I think SA has ben more than accomodating to try to help DH out.

I alos agree it's time to move on. He ain't comin' here, and it's giving me an ulcer just worrying about it.

Phillip McDonald would fill in nicley for DH's scholarship :D

I agree my friend. Darrington had every opportunity to do so...but for now Hobson is not going to be Lobo. And I think the Coaching staff will move on...J'Covan or Reggie Jackson will fill that Scholly. This year the team will be fine without Hobson. Of course UNM would've been that much harder to match-up with Hobson in the mix.
