Coach Alford has really put his eggs all in one basket with Coach Walker...I think he's hoping Coach Walker will deliver. We need P-Mac now more than ever...would be nice to get Jeff Taylor now too, to replace Hobson's scholarship.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment.

And why not? Reason?
Who else are we recruiting for '08 that isn't linked to Coach Walker???...all other recruits have either looked elsewhere or committed elsewhere.

I agree with Pat. What about guys like Chirstian Watford one of the Memphis Kids.DJ RICHARDSON and Lavonte Dority are from Chicago and both are being pursued. UNM has target Areas like Tenneessee, Illinois, Texas, Cali. The Houston Kids happens to be an area where Kids are interested in UNM. Plus Coach Walker is doing a great job in getting them here. Look at the Success UNM has had thus far Will Brown, Rusher, Possibly McDonald, and J'Covan as well. Houston is a real hotbed.

Hmmm...maybe I misread your post. We've got recruiting ties via the other coaches, it's not just Walker and it's not just Houston. You're right that we put a lot into Walker and landing his players, though.

Can't forget BIG Kem or Curtis Dennis, either. Walker is reeling 'em in at astronomical rates!

Okay I think you guys are misunderstanding me...so I will restate it here. For 2008, Coach Alford has put all his trust in Coach Walker. The guys from all other areas have decided to go elsewhere or have shown interest elsewhere and have taken us off their lists. I am not saying that in the future Coach Alford will not recruit other areas and put his trust in other assistants. This is just what happened for this current year.
Wasn't Reggie Jackson supposed to visit for the BYU game? Guess that's not gonna happen now.
BTW...I am not complaining about the job Coach Walker is doing...he's done great...keep up the good work Coach W.

With McDonald visiting this weekend and J'Covan on the 22nd I like UNM's Chances. I think Coach Walker has proven the guy can recruit wouldn't you agree? Coach Alford and his staff are going after the best players....Houston happens to have some of the best High School talent in the US.

Yeah Yakka I agree with you (rep points for you sir)...H-Town does have some of the best talent around...I don't remember what that startling statistic was about number of D1 players produced in the area but it was startling.

It was on the old board...don't remember who posted it.
Hey RPS...why does it say that "You cannot give any more rep points to a certain person and that you must spread them around". Seems kinda difficult considering some of us post more than other members???

Also, we basically hired Walker to reel in these kids for 07, 08 and 09. Why not go for them? REAL TALENT!!
Pretty much after '09 or '10 we cant really rely on Coach Walker anymore because he will no longer have connections to the kids there. Right?
So gotta take advantage NOW!!!

Elmore is a stud. Much better as a total player than Jackson.

I have no idea to be honest! LoL Like I said, if you guys saw the backend of this board you would be lost! I think I know a little about these things and it blows me away. Theres seriously about 500 options! I'll see what I can dig up!

Welcome LoboDogg.
Elmore is very good but his grade are very shaky. I hear BC will send him off to a prep and cross their fingers to get him back.

I believe that stat was 43 D-1 players in the last two years. Most in the nation. Why wouldn't we concentrate our recruiting there? Big connection, plenty of good players...doesn't sound like anything wrong with that.
And Walker will still have ties with the high school and AAU coaches. He is well respected in the area and his name carries a lot of weight. His influence will last long beyond the players he has coached.
I think Loco's point is that the Houston connection may dissuade the non-Houston guys (like Reggie, Elmore, and Babb) from considering UNM. They may feel like outsiders coming to UNM cause they're not part of Walker's stable. That's the point he was trying to make (I think). It's a legitimate concern - not a put down of Walker. Walker's doing a tremendous job, but it would be nice to also land some of the other super-recruits from Memphis and/or Chicago that we have on our recruiting screen.
I guess we want to have our cake and eat it too. But I'm quite happy with just eating our cake (Walker). Better than the low calorie diet we were on before. :)

It's 42-43 this year and 84 over the last two years. Hit me up RPS. 5 Vigintillion works for me.

You got it!
The point resonates that Houston has that staggering number of D-1 prospects over the last couple of years. I love that we're already on a half dozen or so of the '09 guys there.
The point that so many Houston guys might dissuade the guys Miller or whoever is on only rings true for individuals that need someone familiar with them on their team or came to the Elite Camp and maybe didn't feel at ease with some of the Houston kids... perhaps that happened, or perhaps it didn't. I didn't hear anything to that affect, so I don't think it is the case.
Of the areas we targeted, us hitting the motherlode in Houston leaves us in pretty good shape. I don't think it's that Alford trusted one assistant more than another going into this recruiting season, but he might lean that way now that this one is winding towards its stretch run.
I'm like Eddie... if Walker can reel in a whole bunch of his kids over the next couple of years or three, more power to him!

Usually when kids go away to play ball, they don't know anyone on the team anyway. I really don't think that is something that affects recruits.

During the recent interview coach Alford seemed very pleased with the recruiting efforts to date. He also indicated it "normally" takes a good year to get to know players, parents etc. Given the normal recruiting process wasn't going to happen here I think his strategy of hiring an assistant with built-in time and connection with players helped ensure more early success. Going forward, ALL the coaches will have more time to develop contacts and we should see just how effective each coach will be.
Great post Geezer! Rack the rep points.
