View Full Version : FOR EVERONE
After some PM's with Roob this morning and a great post by Alf today I want to explain something. The reason I started the old board was for a few (10-15) people that were banned from another site. I never thought it would be what it is today. If we had 4 or 400 it really doesn't matter to me. I don't care about the amount of members or the number of "hits" or "posts" like others we know. I care about a quality and a type of environment that reflects well on UNM and the internet community.
One thing I cant stand is people "whining" like Alf said. I totally understand when feelings run hot and people say things that they later regret BUT I still wont tolerate calling players "terrible" and other names. I don't ever want to seem like some censor natzi but also will enforce derogatory things to our team. I know Philly personally and have given him tickets to the games this year. We resolved what I had a issue with through PM's. I also talked to UNMFAN via PM;s as well and I feel like were all on the same page.
This is a young site and I will take suggestion though PM's for a better site but allowing people to post trash about the team during a hard fought game wont be allowed. If I ran down a list of people who monitor this board and read every post were you call someone a name reflects on the site as a whole. I don't know how to say this without naming names but theres major names on this board and im not doing this for effect. High ranking officials for UNM, agents, parents, players, AAU coaches from around the nation. All these people read those negative posts and it reflects on the university badly. Why would you send a kid here if you read all these "fans" calling these KIDS names after 9 games? I never knew the stretches of this site till recently. I will give you a story.
A while back I said some things about a big AAU coach and what I thought of him. I thought he was taking kids away from UNM to serve his own interests. He read my comments and PM'd me about it. I told him what I though and he explained why he thought I was wrong and why. We shared many emails over several weeks and I later apologized for what were maybe misguided comments. Never the less we added a good friend to the site though my f ups. I wont let my screw up reflect on us again and I wont let someone else follow in my shoes.
We all here to support the team and University. I will hold up my end all I ask is that you hold up yours. I want to have a 1000 hard core fans on here but if they cant keep it within the lines then i'll still be happy with the same 15 who started this with me. Thats not some BBW threat by the way. :D I appreciate everyones help on here more that you can understand. I really do care about all those little names sitting on the bottom of my screen and will do anything I can to help you better your experience here on the site.
I try to get interviews with the staff members, players , recruits all that because I think we have the best collection of fans on the internet. I shell out money for the site for you guys because I get positive feedback so we must be doing something right. I offer some MWC game tickets from my own pocket for suggestions on helping UNM raise attendance. My point is im trying to help the cause so try to help mine and respect what were trying to do, please. Sorry if im ranting but I don't want to seem like a jerk or anything.
Thanks again to every member that contributes to OUR site and that makes it the best site in Lobo Land!

Great message, RPS, not sure if you are wanting feedback so I'll delete if you want but thanks for helping set everything straight. Also, thanks again for this site. This is hands down the best independent site for UNM athletics, IMHO. (no, RPS, didn't pay me to say that :D )
You're absolutely right that more than fans and members read these sites, which is why I am so grateful for your efforts and the efforts of others that have helped make this site what it is.

Great post, bud. I understand that emotions get high during a game, especially against the Aggies. Advice for some posters: read your post over before you send it, taking into consideration the rules of this board and who will read it.
I was upset with what was going on last night, but when I went back today and read the game thread everyone seemed to have understood what they were saying and cleaned it up. So I apologize if I was mean or condescending to anyone. We are all Lobo fans here and are united in our love and support for the team!

the problem just may be the live game threads. emotions are high. posts are quick and many times without full thought. When you type out bad shot. or it's happening again, its tough to relate that fully without much context. I dont know if the problem began there or what, but alot of times with alittle bit of a grace period, many people settle down and think rationally.
close the board 2 hours before, during, and then 2 hours after? and let cooler heads prevail?

You can set a time limit where posters can only post every so often (30 seconds, 60 seconds, etc.), I'd prefer that to shutting the site down.
Ultimately, I'd hope we're all capable of policing ourselves. As was mentioned, take a breath, read your post...and sometimes it's ok to NOT hit the submit reply button.
Great post RPS. I think it's an accurate statement to say that all who post on this board want the best for our Lobos. Passions can run high sometimes and people say things in the moment that they'll later regret. Your reminder should prove helpful.

I agree with Wally, game threads posts come off the top w/out much thought. I was razzing Mike during the Miss game, but it is what it is. In a tough loss like last night I didnt even sign on, BUT THAT TAKES DISCIPLINE!! All you can ask for is mods do their sidework after games until cooler heads prevail. PLEASE DONT PULL THE PLUG RPS PLEASE DONT!!!:horn)

I'm like everyone else, sometimes you just feel so into the game that things come out wrong. I try not to post anything heavy at the end of a game, but wait till the next day. I know most of these posters and I feel for the Fire that burns in them and usually shrug off any thing that is said in the heat of the game. But as you say RPS, parents, friends, coaches and enemies all read this board and we love some and hate others but we love The Lobos. I would not want to hurt any player or coach or their family or friends, and God forbid we help one of our enemies pick up a recruit!! Thanks RPS, for all you have done.

I hadn't thought of that one Wally. Nor the one about limiting the frequency of posts suggested by Expat. Those are some good ideas. I also came up with other radical ideas like: A.) Allow people to post w/o restraint, but then after the game was over we could flush the thread, leaving no trace of what had transpired; B.) Assign a moderator to be the pooper scooper for that thread. Think of the guy who follows behind the elephants on parade. This way the trash would only be temporarily visible to a handful of people, but would disappear before the stench had formed; C.) Throwing violaters into a holding tank, temporarily restricting their ability to post till after their BAC levels got back down to legal limits. Think of Otis the drunk on Mayberry (please don't jump on me Agnes or Expat or Protege or Rick or whoever monitors that type of humor on this board); and then I woke up. I'll keep dreaming up suggestions to share with RPS. One of these days, one of them may actually be practical.

I think that is a great idea. Is it possible for a monitor to edit just part of a post?

RPS, your post is totally reasonable and a good reminder for us all. Obviously as fans we all get excited during the good times and frustrated during the bad. I think that the key thing is that we all need to recognize that the players, coaches, and staff are ordinary people doing extraordinary things under a microscope, and we must never lose respect for them whether they succeed or fail - the truth is they are doing things that most of us could only dream of ever doing, and we have no true appreciation of the difficulties involved. They do not exist just to fulfill our fantasies of UNM going to sweet 16's etc. Having said that, I do think that it is ok to talk about both the good and not so good things that are happening, so long as these observations and analyses express understanding rather than simply venting one's spleen.

I like the idea of flushing game threads. I've never read a game thread for any sport that was worth keeping around afterwards (which admitedly played a role in my own posts on that thread).
My pateince runs low during cruddy games (no where near as bad as some...like the guy who sits behind us at the Pit who gets pissed at players for missing free throws where UNM is winning
("now make it!!!!" he screams)). Which doesn't excuse any unacceptable behavior of course. Anyway, I don't want to harp on that thread too much (as I've addressed it in a number of threads and PMing with RSP), my lesson has been learned. Ultimately, I think that myself and everyone else I've read on this board are true lobo fans and don't want to hurt the program in any way - game threads just sometimes take that perspective away.
I've been on a site with time restrictions on posting and it is actually a tad bit annoying - for a number of reasons.
Kudos to the admins of this site. It has the best forum interaction of any of the Big Three as far as I can tell. It is remarkably troll free and anti-UNM free which is refreshing.

Hello RedPitSea. Great post, and thanks for all you do to make this the premier Lobo site.
I just wanted to put my $.02 in on the game thread issue.
I don't think you should lock down the board 2 hours before until 2 hours after. I feel strongly about that. There is a lot of excitement before, during, and after a game, and what better place to express that excitement than on a sports messageboard? Also, if you miss seeing the game, the game thread is actually provides a good recap. It let's you experience the highs and lows of the game, and gives you a feel for what transpired. I hope
I do think that posters should be held to the standard TOS, and that we should all excercise a little restraint. We shouldn't be bashing players and coaches on these threads, but constructive criticism is OK. One idea that was mentioned that I think works pretty well would be to have a time limit on posts. If you can only post once per minute, or once every two minutes, it gives you time to think about what you are posting.
Again, thanks for the great site!
Thanks VWolf. The site wont change a bit.No time limits, no shutting it down etc. Thats what a messages boards for! Just try to think before your post, thats all. No biggie really, and I have faith that we will be able to police our own.

This is all associated with real time comments on the live game thread, Lost. Heat of the moment stuff. Most of us have gotten emotional at one time or another and said things we later regret. This is also why you can't buy a gun w/o a waiting period, to prevent emotions from making you do something dumb. Maybe you missed the context.

What an amazingly simple rule. In other words, if people knew who you were, and you had to have lunch with them the next day, would you post a particular comment on the internet?
From someone who was run off another board partly because of a fundamental disagreement over the repurcussions of negativity (on message boards) upon our beloved university- so much so that I was ready to give up on message boards altogether, my heartfelt thanks to RPS for this board and all he does to make it something to be proud of.

I understand the context 100 percent. I don't understand letting your emotions change your opinions.
Emotions may not change your opinions, but they may change the way you express them. The special thing about this board is the respect members show to each other and to the players and coaching staff. Derogatory language directed towards any of these parties is not acceptable. As has been said on this board, many people come to this site to read this content. So we need to conduct ourselves in an appropriate manner. It may seem OK to some to express their anger by taking it out on 19-21 year old kids. But it's not accepted on this board.
I rarely post after a tough loss because of what I may say. An hour or so later, my emotions have calmed down and I can post a more rational opinion.
I"ve been to NBA message boards and followed game threads there. I used to laugh at them because of the schizophrenic personalities of the posters. One minute Danny Granger sucks then he's the best player in the league. While I don't agree with the language and attitude on these boards, the subjects are adults being paid millions of dollars to play. This is not true of college basketball players (at least not at UNM). I have the utmost respect for these young men who are held to a higher standard, both academically and in the public eye, than other students. So I refuse to insult them. Emotions do not excuse bad behavior.

Acceptable: Jones (or whoever) is having a miserable night tonight. He's been in a funk for about 2 weeks. (To which should probably be added something to the effect of: I hope he can snap out of it. He could make a solid contribution.)
Unacceptable: Jones (or whoever) is a worthless POS.

Not matter how upset we get at any point, if we keep the comments restricted to behavior and do not go after general character, we likely won't cross the line.

(Just got back to this thread - busy weekend) More difficult indeed. I think it's right on the edge. Given my preferences for accpeting edgy stuff, I'd rule it acceptable but would wish that the hypothetical poster had deleted (or not entered), "Get him out of there now!!!" But if anybody wanted to call that one unacceptable, I wouldn't have a major argument with them. Actually, the sentiment is implied by the two sentences surrounding it and isn't really necessary. (Which is why I wouldn't have a major argument with one who thinks it's too far.)
