View Full Version : Pancake picks!

Remember those pancake picks we used to see with Katie Kern or Melissa Forrest absolutely flattening an unwary opponent? It seems to me that on at least two or three occasions last night we had Jessica or Angela in perfect position to flatten a player (who obviously didn't know they were there,) and Amy ran around her screening teammate so that the girl guarding her had plenty of room to get by. Do you think our point guards might be too nice and don't have that killer instinct? Or do you think the Lady Lobos are afraid that knocking down an opposing player will just motivate their opponents and backfire on them? I would think that Jessica and Angela are going to quit working so hard to position themselves like that if nothing is ever going to come of it.

Go Lady Lobos! Beat Stanford!!

I can't imagine thinking that this might fire up the opposing team. Every one of these picks in the past seemed to intimidate the opponent and fire up the crowd! It's the ballhandler's job to rub off the hip of the screener and take her opponent into the screen. Poor execution if you ask me.

It was an Arizona player that got knocked out a few years ago. They may have been warned about those.

You must not have seen the game last year in Fort Worth. The lady lobos had a nice lead in the first half, when, I think it was Dionne, flattened a TCU freshman, Danielle Nunn and she was out cold for about 5 minutes. She never returned to the game.

Needless to say, it got the TCU team so fired up, we not only lost the comfortable lead we had built up so far in the game, they ended up running us right off the court and blowing us out bigtime. You don't see teams get that fired up too often, and TCU certainly was and showed it on the court. I do think the reaction with your home crowd is much different than when you're on the road.

BTW, Snoopme, a very astute obervation. I also noticed, we did not seem to be looking to set picks very often and really did not appear that was one of our focuses. There seemed to be several instances, where a pick could have been set to free up a shooter and they just weren't getting set.

on the team, however I wlll say Amanda sets picks ALL the time. She is queen of setting picks. Can she improve in other areas? You bet, however, setting picks isn't one of them. The problems I see are: the passes need to be earlier, (hence when the player is open), we need to kick the ball up to the open player and take advantage of our quick players, and we need to not be aftraid to pass the ball inside. Also, it would be helpful if some shots would drop, but hey, if they're not going to drop, go get the rebound. Unfortunately the fear factor is setting in because players are afraid to make a mistake or they come out. The call for tough competitors didn't really fit to me since Coach has been saying all along how tough and hard working this team is. I see them competing, I see tough players, what I don't see are confident players, playing like a team. For the teams sake, I hope this gets resolved. You can see the frustration they're feeling and I know they work very hard. This is a group of tough young ladies. GO LOBOS!

swishtime...i see amanda as the biggest victim of flanagan's quick hook which i do not understand...she brings so much more flexibility to the team when she starts at the three...tell her to remain strong...

Btw, Amanda is one of my favorites on the team. It doesn't matter if she starts but I would like her on court 25 minutes a game. She is smart, makes few errors, plays good defense, and is able to put the ball on the floor or shoot from distance.

You guys don't have to be nice to me because I'm AA's mom, however, your comments are appreciated:bighug

Especially right now!

I get concerned about confidence. Everyone is going to make mistakes. She was yanked last night after her player scored on her. Being the rose colored glasses parent, what I saw was a defender who fought through 3 screens in a row and then got beat with no help. That happens. Yank her if she's lazy or not focused or too tired to play hard, I get that, but last night was tough. She'll be fine though, so will I; haha, we always say, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger (in a rap voice way off key)-

If you stayed for the last painful minute of the game, AA drove to the basket and was fouled. I think if she wants to play more she'll have to do more of that. Anyway, that was my free unsolicited advice for her after the game.

I see such potential in this team. These are nice kids that are willing to work really hard. I know AA just wants to help this team be successful. She's not looking to go to the WNBA -she doesn't care about personal awards or any of that. She just wants her team to WIN! I think that's what all the girls want!

GO LOBOS!!!

Thank you swish!

I agree that we needed more drive to the basket last night and I also am concerned about confidence. Arizona came out and was the more physical team last night, imo. We did not respond well on the offensive end of the court anyway. I thought we should have been driving to the basket more, and being more aggressive with our inside game. If the 3's are a fallin, everything is wonderful, but when they ain't, you have to do other things until they do. Mostly a result of youth I think.

I also whole heartedly agree with the potential for this team. We have a great group of kids, and I am sure they are going to work hard to get better. As long as they are giving great effort, I am behind them 100% of the way. Please tell your daughter that we love watching her play and develop with the team.

Go Lobos!

No, I didn't see the game in Fort Worth- was that televised? But now that you mention it, it does ring a bell because I did listen to the game that TCU got fired up after that.

Corrected: I can't imagine thinking it would fire up the other team when it gets our home crowd so fired up as a negating factor.

On the road is evidently a different story, though personally I'd still do it because it ought to fire you up to set a pick like that.

I specifically said in my earlier post that the Lobos did not play hard. This is not to say they were dogging it out there; I'm sure they thought they were giving their all. However, when you see a team up the intensity as the men's team is doing this year, you can appreciate the difference. I don't know if the gals were tentative for fear of making a mistake, or whether they stood around because Arizona's quickness and pressure took us out of a very structured offense. Without the ability to dribble penetrate we can be lost in certain situations. The two Amandas and Brandi can create this way, and maybe Geronika, but I haven't seen enough of her. I love the Men's early offense. You push the ball and look for a shot before the other team has a chance to get set. If unavailable you run your set offense.

Bingo! We don't seem to get many easy buckets these days. The more we can get the better off we are.
