View Full Version : Will have a story and pics up soon!
Im freaking tired but it was great meeting up with all of you tonight!
Don't wimp out on us RPS, you're the young grasshopper in the bunch and we expect you to stay up till 3 in the morning getting the story posted. I would post my 10,000 word dissertation here, but I don't want to steal your thunder.
By the way, where did Rick go?? He sat with a stranger who bought his other ticket instead of sitting with us?@#$@?? Is there a way to give negative rep points on this board??
Okay, I can't resist offering a small morsel for our out of town friends. I will keep this brief so as not to detract from a more comprehensive report that's coming from RPS and friends.
First of all, Phil and Curtis did not play in the scrimmage. Not sure if they're allowed to play on their official visit. When the NY guys came last year on unofficial visits, they scrimmaged with the team. Maybe you can only scrimmage if you come to a camp type of setting, but not when you're here on an official visit. Not getting to watch these guys play was a bit of a letdown. Also the coaches weren't allowed on the floor. It was just the players playing a pickup game, essentially - no refs, no coaches.
Before talking about the scrimmage, I've got to give major rep points to Danny Granger. He was there sitting near one of the baskets. I can't give that young man enough props for his great support of the Lobo program.
Scrimmage highlights (tidbits for now, I'll describe only those things that stood out to me):
- Daniel Faris. He's developed a nice turnaround left-handed hook. He actually shot more with his left hand than his right hand during the scrimmage. He's got a nice release on it, you can tell he's worked hard on it. The guys around me were all comparing his post moves and footwork to Chiotti. He's improved quite a bit from last year. I think this will be his break out year.
- Tony Danridge. He made what seemed to be 4 consecutive dunks towards the end of the scrimmage. Very impressive, athletic throwdowns. They were all good, but the putback off a missed shot was an especially impressive and thunderous dunk. Even Granger was moved to leave his seat upon witnessing the impressive feat. Tony was the human highlight film at this scrimmage. He was also hitting his outside shot.
- JR. Much more subdued than what we've seen in the past. Stayed much more in control, which is good. He hit some outside shots and a couple of dunks as well. He's going out of his way to stay under control. On some ocassions when he had a 1 on 1 breakaway, he would pull out and look for the trailers. He was unselfish, almost too unselfish. I thought he passed up some opportunities to exploit his superior athleticism, especially in situations where he was 1 on 1 ahead of pack. Gotta' give him kudos for adjusting his game. He's still tremendously athletic, getting great height on his jump shot.
- Dairese Gary. Very strong, thick PG. He looks like an upperclassman out there already. Was hitting his 3 point shots very well and playing very physically on defense. He may not be our starting PG this season, but he's definitely going to push Prentice very hard for that honor. He was not backing down from the much older, experienced players on the floor. He could be a pleasant surprise this season.
- Kem Enweke. He's huge. He's the tallest guy on the team, a legit 6'9" with a big body. Still needs to work on his conditioning. Footwork needs further refinement, but he has really soft hands. He had a nice, soft touch on all shots within 10 feet of the rim.
- Monquel Pegues. About same height as Faris, 6'8". Didn't get to watch much of him, he is also working on his conditioning.
- Johnnie Harris. Thick legs and butt. Yakka's right, nobody will push this guy around. Probably around 6'6", but super thick. Somewhat limited offensively - we'll count on him for Rebounds and Defense.
- Gotta' give some props to Roman. He just seems to always be in the right place, making a key pass, rebound, shot, defensive stop, etc..
Wow, good thing I kept this brief. Would hate to see my full write-up.

Nice write up, Pro. Danny was going nuts after Tony's dunks! Danny is such a nice and gracious person. Wow, we lucked out getting him.
I agree with pretty much everything you said. I must have notices Monquel a little more than you. He has a nice touch from 8 feet in. It is just so nice to see some size out there. Kem needs some conditioning and weight work. A year of redshirting is a good thing for him. Kem, Curtis and McDonald were sitting in front of us joking around like old friends...which they are. Points for UNM. C'mon Phillip, just commit to us and get it over with!

I caught about 15 minutes of the scrimmages. Really impressed by Faris. Great low post moves. I like the size of the some of our new guys. Who wouldn't. Also, Wills is one to keep an eye on.
Storys up in recruiting reports!

Great report! I caught the whole scrimmage. DF is the man down low. Pegues can face the basket, which will allow him to play with Daniel. JR has made "chemistry" strides. Tony needs to stay aggressive. Dairese Gary is going to push for significant PT. Nweke should RS regardless of NCAA ruling. Chad lit it up. Roman will play. Blake's dominated the defensive glass. darren was his usual solid Darren.
Nice write up, Pro.
A couple of points I gleened from being under the south basket:
JR pulled up because the rules of the scrimmage stated that if all defenders weren't back across half court, the offense would get the bucket and the ball if they made the shot. This was so the scrimmage didn't deteriorate into a cherry picking contest. It seemed that in most instances, the offenses would just respectfully pull it out and wait for a straggling defender before initiating attacking the basket.
I said over the summer how Daniel Faris seemed to have improved his game and it showed yesterday. Danny Granger commented on how impressive it is to see him using both his left and his right to score. Far and away the most pleasing thing I saw at the scrimmage...
... except for the assertiveness that Tony Danridge exhibited towards the end of the scrimmage. He was aggressive throughout, and showed a nice touch from outside, but he became a man amongst boys with four viscious dunks that capped the afternoon- a drive from the left wing through defenders not reacting quick enough to cut him off; a viscious tip-dunk from high above the cylinder; another two handed dunk flat footed; and off an alley-oop caught high and left of the backboard and brought down as if Tony D despised that rim. All four brought Danny G to his feet. After the last one, DG proclaimed that they might as well end the scrimmage.

Thanks for the info...I was out of town but seems like I didn't miss a thing with these great reports.....Hearing about DG being there gives me some confidence that Philip will be a Lobo.

I think you need to rest today. 5X? Take some cod liver oil and use ice...
Bloo, thanks for the clarification on the rules of the scrimmage. I had no idea they were playing with rules out there. But now it all makes sense. So maybe JR has found a perfect balance of being unselfish and taking advantage when the opportunity presents itself.

Did the crowd at the football game give Curtis and Philip a nice welcome? Have not read anything

only current team was introduced to the crowd. i didn't see if either walked theu TRM section.
They didnt walk to TRM but they were on the field for a brief time. Not sure where they went though.
