Wow, what a break out game for Alex. 11-13 shooting and only played 21 minutes!!!
If he has another good game up in Laramie, he could be player of the week this week!

AK and KW both had great games. Kirk with 31 on 11 of 13 shooting and 7 of 8 from the line. Plus look at Kendall's line 8 Pts 3 Reb 10 Ast 4 Stl and only 1 TO. These guys are not playing like freshman!
Where are the people who said hes only played against NM talent, slow .....
His 31 points came in 21 mins. He played half the game.

What I had forgotten is that Kenny Thomas' previous record of 30 points was set against freaking Utah in 1996 in the freaking WAC championship game. Not to take anything away from Alex's new record, but good lord KT was a monster.

Alex sure had it going tonight. Awesome performance!
A big man who can shoot and score like that can be a huge weapon. He's only going to continue to get better.

Captain Kirk made the front page of ESPN's college hoops page as one of the "Top Performers" - little box on the right side of the screen underneath the scoreboard. Cool!

Lol, yep and they mentioned he also had 19 rebounds in that game. A freakin' 30/20 game in the championship game of your conference for an NCAA invite, dang good!!!
Kirk definitely has a very bright future!!!

Probably not. Isn't the rule that Jimmer is automatically POW if BYU wins?

Nailed it Catherine.
MWC-POTY was handed out in the preseason. Jimmer could break his leg with 1/3 of the season left and still win. Think im kidding?
Every Kirk shot looks like it's going in...he is smooth.

BTW, UNM has the two best freshmen in the MWC. One's a PG and one's a center. Talk about a great foundation going forward.
89-77. BYU and AFA atop the MWC standings. Oh and SDSU too.
It feels good to blow the doors off someone in the PIT. Goodnight!

During the whole flagrant foul confab with the refs in the second, I thought for a minute there that they were looking in the NCAA handbook to see if there was a mercy rule.

Well Jimmer went for 39 against UNLV at the Thomas & Mack tonight so it looks like he locked it up this week with his performance on the court.
Alex did it against a D2 school. No disrespect just putting things into perspective.

Pffttt. Alex put up 31 in 21 minutes. BY-Jimmer should take notes from The Captain.

I loved the radio interview with Stig... Reece and AJ got on him for missing the two shots at costing them assists. Then he went on to say "Well you know my record at the Pit is really 44" and that he wasnt satisfied with the 31... happy yes but not satisfied.

Cal State is in their 3rd season of D1. Some will try bs to discredit a great game by Alex. Also, Colorado only managed a 12 pt win against them at home.
Great game Alex, many more will come.

Alex was 2-3 from 3pt, 11-13 fg, 7-8 freethrows. Jimmer shot 13 3's, 25 fg's, 2 more freethrows. Jimmer scores 8 more points. Add 19 more minutes for Jimmer, if you're not impressed you don't have a pulse.

No doubt that Fredette had a strong game against UNLV, and it was a conference game. But to discredit Alex's performance is ridiculous. He took open shots, did not take bad shots, and set great screens. He intimidated inside and another thing I thought about last night:
Alex, Drew, Cam and AJ were so active and so effective, that it opened up the lane for the guards. And I thought our guards took good advantage of it. And yes, Bakersfield State is a DI and I think, though I may be mistaken, that the Roadrunners are slated for the Big West.

What I loved most of all was ALL THE LOBO PLAYERS WERE CHEERING FOR KIRK TO HIT 30 POINTS... I am a true believer when a player is hot feed him the ball. Alex is a SPECIAL player, just wait fans until he learns exactly what he is capable of doing. YIKES !! I think Capt. Kirk will start every game, Drew has no ego about coming in off the bench.... capt. Kirk "beam me up " LOL

Nope, I've got a small friendly wager on AK's junior season finishing stat averages with a fellow Lair mate is all. With out looking it up I believe I said 17pts 10rebounds 2-3blocks. We'd have to get attydude involved for the full details my inbox doesn't show my sent messages to him for some reason. LOL
That great game by Kirk was a bummer. Now Kendall will have to share FOY with Kirk.

It was 17-10-2 his junior year. I think I'm safe, but I would love to lose that bet.

A couple of the callers to Stig's show last night said that the guy actually punched Alex in the chest or something. I dunno - nobody on the floor seemed too fazed about anything at the time, but I guess the refs saw what they saw.

The replays didn't show it, but the orginal live shot (I recorded the game today and replayed it) showed no. 12 with a closed fist swing his right arm into Alex's chest. The referee standing out of bounds along the baseling had a clear view and called the foul. Then the refs. got together to determine if it was a flagrant foul and decided it was.
BTW, I want to put some money down on the challenge about whether Alex will be playing in the NBA for money after leaving the Lobo program. He will definetly be an NBA player.

Not taking anything away from Kirk, but KT put up his 30 against a future NBA front line - Van Horn and Doleac. Not to mention another future NBA player, Andre Miller, sagging down on him. I remember him just abusing Doleac all game.
My hats off to Kirk for a great game, but I've got to call a spade a spade. The two performances just don't compare... not even close...

Yeah - people are comparing the two performances. Some are saying the the best freshman we've ever had, etc. etc. I'm simply stating that Kirk's performance last night isn't even in the same ballpark as Kenny's was back in 96...
I'm not knocking Kirk at all, I'm just setting the record straight. Kenny gets NO CREDIT on this board for being the greatest Lobo of all time.

Get over it, Kirk is here and now with a very bright future, and a huge asset to the LOBO program. All players are great in their own way at different eras. I am proud of our great LOBO heritage and past greats, but I'm riding on Kirk's bandwagon for the next 4 years. And beyond.
GO LOBOS.

I know people are going to get on me for being negative, but I just think we need to keep things in perspective. I'm glad Kirk had a great game but IMO his deficiencies still remain. He has problems guarding more athletic bigs. The further he has to move away from the paint on defense, the worse he is. Fortunately for the lobos, I believe he matches up well against every team in the MWC except SDSU and UNLV. I believe that Gordon will have to play a much bigger role in those games if we are to win.
I think when all is said and done Alex will be the best lobo center of all time. But he's not close to being there yet. He has a lot of work to do. Especially on the defensive end, and setting screens.

If Kenny T. did more for his University he might be better received on these message boards. Danny Granger, who spent 3 maybe 4 semesters in a Lobo Uni, has a plaque in the pit acknowledging a six figure donation to the expansion along side Brian Urlacher with a similiar donation. I don't hear much about Kenny's participation in local activities other than his youth camp at Albuq. High, and there have been problems with it. His contributions on the court were undeniable, but like my favorite Lobo of all time, Mel Daniels who rarely makes a visit to ABQ, he has kind of shown some disdain for his Alma Mater and the fans in ABQ.

I loved that game. Seeing KT own big head Doleac made my day. Definitely can't compare the the competition, but Alex has such a sweet shot I think when it's all said and done he will be a better player than KT by his senior year.

I agree with he defensive issues, but most of the reason for this is because of the lack of big men at the 5 college basketball, for yrs we had 4's playing the 5 against others playing out of position or schools who use to recruited big men better then us. Alex has improved on defensive already this season ,but still needs to keep improving. A great example of this Northern Iowa basically playing 3 guards and 2 forwards, even Gordon had problems defensively in that game, not till AJ started guarding #20 did we contain him. Where we need to compare him when he guards a true 5 (Byu,Utah) and see if he has improved since NMSU game.
