I saw Brian Bridgewater (Episcopal High School, Baton Rouge, LA) on the list for 2013. Arizona supposedly leads for him. A few words on Bridgewater. Plays with back to the basket and has a very strong and thick body. However, for a PF, he is undersized at around 6'5", 230 lbs. Shorter version of Drew Gordon but more physical. Animal on the glass. Takes it to the basket strong and few players in HS can match his upper body strength. Powers through other players. He's trying to add a midrange game, because he lacks size for an interior player. Some people see him going to a team like UNM, Oklahoma or Ok. State even though he has aspirations of playing for an elite program like UA or UNC. Older brother Brad Bridgewater played for LSU back in 2001 - 2003. Supposedly, he wants to play out of state (i.e., not at LSU although they have offered). For those who like rankings, he is a rivals 3 star, rated 90 overall. Scout has him 4 stars, 93, and the #17 overall PF. Supposedly, Arizona has offered, and Bridgewater visited Arizona back in September, but did not commit. Numerous schools (Arizona, LSU, Memphis, Ok State, Baylor, Marquette, Oklahoma, etc) have offered. AAU team is Houston Hoops.

I have relocated down south to Tide country, and if I get a chance, I will try to see Bridgewater play. He is a beast in the paint, and if Zona or UNC don't have room for him, he could fall to the Lobos if we make a strong push. However, I don't see evidence at this time that we are making a push for him.

With both Drew and AJ finishing this year, tons of minutes are open at the forward spots. I don't think there would be any issue with minutes, especially, since Phil is also finishing and has basically played the 3 the last couple years.
Hoping Alex, Cam and Aget can anchor down the center position, leaving the 3/4 open to Tony and...

He looks quite impressive and from the sounds of it (message boards) is underrated so that fits Alford's typical style. Didn't see him take any jumpers though so will be interesting to see where he fits in. He would be way undersized at the 4 and not a typical 'Alford fit' anywhere lower in that I don't know how many non-shooting guards we have had under him. That said his coach reckons he is a "major match up problem" for forwards who cannot contain him off the dribble drive. He can obviously rebound well so I am officially intruiged.
The only thing is - is he definitely in contact with UNM? Mark hasn't listed him and in a previous thread the conclusion was that it might have been a mix up with NMSU because of their Canadian connections.
Anyone got anything more?

The family factor goes a long way in recruiting sometimes. One of the things Aaron said in his "day in the life of.." is that the most important thing a team can have is a players coach, someone who will understand him and push him. If that doesn't sound like Alford, I dunno what does.

The coaches he should steer clear from are the ones who ... well, let me give an example. If a Jalen Rose pitches a point guard starting position, he should turn and run for the nearest exit.

Yeah, this might work best. If we start a new thread for each recruit, it might make it easier for those who want to contribute, too. For example, if I come across an article or vid on a recruit, I can just find the player thread and post accordingly. We don't even have to move info from this thread, just start a new thread from here on out.
Depending on what Mark wants to do, he can keep this one for his "master" list on pg 1, or just post info on each recruit's thread.
That's what I hoped everyone would do. I think that's the best way to keep track. But I've been so busy that every time I sit down I end up doing something else. But yeah, that's fine!

Hey Mark, I was wondering if you could add something to the 'sticky' message at the start of the recruiting thread...?
In addition to noting those who are signed/offered/etc, could you have a single line (or separate area) that notes how many scholarships UNM currently has available for each of the years? (based on expected graduations, etc) Not a big deal, but could be useful for the armchair coaches out there... It is something that would only need to be updated when someone either joins the program or leaves it so it would be pretty static most of the time.
Thanks!
I'll see if I can do something like that this weekend! Good idea.

I notice that Obej is not listed. Shouldn't he be listed as 2013 as offered & committed? Assuming I am correct, how does that impact how many schollies we have for 2013? Thanks in advance for any info.
It can work a number of ways. Officially Obij is no longer officially committed because he's going prep again. But everyone knows he's a UNM commit. We can either take one from 2012 if we don't use it or use one from 2013 if we need it. Doesn't look like we're going to sign anyone for 2012 but who knows. Basically we will "bank" the 2012 scholly.

Are there any players we are targeting in that area (i.e. Pancakes former teammates or players he played against?)

Dominique Collier who we have on the board is the better of the two, but Josh is coming on strong. I suspect either one would be a special recruit and would go well with our offense and both play defense. Josh goes to Regis Jesuit so his grades should be excellent and Dominique has been on the honor roll since he was a Freshman at East. Dominique is starting pick up interest nationally and I would think Josh would too.

Only thing about Perkins from watching the video, he needs to cool down the dogging and celebration after big plays. Pretty sure he got a T around the 3:55 mark.
Now the fantastic, I want this kid! he can pass with the best of them.

Just a suggestion. Would it make sense to have a separate "thread" for each year's class? Have a 2013 thread, 2014 thread, 2015 thread, etc.
That way, if any of us want to specifically review our 2014 recruits, we're not having to scan 13 pages of posts to see which are specifically 2014 recruits and comments or info about those recruits?
I'd like to get up to speed on the 2014 class, since we would most likely have 4 spots open.

Johnathon Wilkins seems to be an active big, but appears to be mostly a offensive rebound and put back or cut down the lane for a quick-pass and dunk. (based on a whopping 1 minute video)
You listed him as a green, keeping an eye on, but not one of the top tier priorities?
BTW, of all the "bigs" you have listed, probably Fitzner, would be the most ideal for what we run. Chad is showing this year and Ro did a couple years back, a stretch 4 can really be a force in our offense and he has the size to defend the post on defense.
Lastly, do you have any idea of how many of each type of player we are after? Will we simply try to replace the positions we lose: 1 post, 1 small forward and 2 guards. Or, will we try to get a diff mix?
Honestly, I'd like to see us target some bigger shooting guards, kind of like Merv or Devon, but as a shooting guard. Seems, over the last few years, we have had trouble guarding the 6'5-6'6" type of player with handles.
Maybe ZC and Pickens are targeted to fill that need?
IMO, that's when PMac was most effective at the 2 guard spot. He could shoot right over the top of most defenders his frosh and soph years and it helped his rebounding.

I counted 22 players we are recruiting. I cant remember that many in the past.

so is Naamon Wright 6'3" or 6'5"? The recent article Mike post, mentioned he is now 6'5" and well over 200 lbs.
At that size, he be like an Ike Williams type build?

I guess add Jordan McLaughlin to the list, per his tweet of UNM in his final 10.
By my count, that is now 4 guards all rated in the top 60 nationally of overall players that we are heavily recruiting.
Wow, if we can land 1 of the 4 to pair with Bryce and Xavier Adams, we are going to have a ridiculous back-court in the next few years.
Now, just get a legit power post player they can lob passes to for ferocious dunks!

Cheatham did have his moments tonight but this game was dominated by guard play. He rebounds well and goes hard after all rebounds not just those in his area. Most all of his points came underneath the basket or on strong drives. Has a nice touch from the free throw line and handles the ball well except when he tries to do to much. He seems to always get his hand on balls all over the court, very active. He had three or four assist, about 10 boards and between 14 - 18 points. He was definitely the best player on the court. He scared everyone in the gym when he went for a dunk and slipped on some moisture on the floor and took a really hard fall. They stopped the game several times due to the moisture and with about 2:00 minutes left they called the game because of rain (lol) seriously it has rained all day in PX and the warehouse type of buildings with flat roofs are not leak proof.
Only thing missing would have been some competition, the final score was approximately a 50 point margin. Oh one other thing his team has a real strong guard didn't catch his name (1) was his number like him a lot.

FYI, #15 on the blue team is Shabazz Muhammad and #33 is his brother Rashad. The big center is Upshaw whos at Fresno St right now. He goes right at Shabazz and blocks him on the hammer dunk. Thats impressive but I doubt you'll see us take him because were overloaded at his position.

I'm sure this might have been covered before, but I was wondering why Coach Alford has his two sons on scholarship instead of as walk-on's. Isn't tuition free or ridiculous cheap for University employees? Are there some NCAA rules that prevent walk-on's from some type of benefits that the other players get?
Kory is only on scholarship because one became free. Bryce is on scholarship because he is good. Simple as that.

Actually, I'd rather have him stay at a 3 star and then blossom to a 4 star once he gets on UNM's campus!!!
I'm just happy to see us going after some bigs. I really think if Alex improves from soph to Jr year like he did from frosh to soph year, he could become a lock for a first round pick, and since he will have already graduated, would make sense to make the jump, especially, if he can get a guaranteed 3 year contract.
If both Alex and Cam leave in the same year, it leaves us seriously deficient in scoring options at the post position. Something that needs to be addressed in the 2014 class. Would love to see us land Fitzner and Jones to help anchor our interior for the next several years, along with more defensive players Obij and Tim and hopefully Nick will develop on both sides of the ball.

Bigs are needed come 14-15. We could aford to redshirt Kornet and allow his physical strength to catch up to his growth spurt. Jones may be able to step in right away.
