and why?
Born and raised in 'Burque, I didn't have a hometown favorite. I was a big Cowboys fan as a kid, but have since lost interest. I followed them a little bit while I lived in Dallas, more out of media saturation than anything. Right now, I follow the Bears mostly because of Urlacher but also the Oklahoma players they have drafted.
I don't really have a team that I'm a diehard fan of, I mostly follow players who I know. Followed Terrance Mathis, Stoney Case (sp?), Hank Baskett, Urlacher of course...
So who's your team and why?

Broncos first and formost. Growing up in ABQ, they were the AFC on TV most of the time, plus both my parents are Broncos fans. Then, moving to Denver for my last two years of HS, they won their Super Bowls the year before, and the first year I was there.
Of course, I follow all the teams with Lobo's on them.

Redskins and Rams. I became a Redskins fan because I was a Dallas hater. And I have been a Rams fan since I was a kid here in Santa Fe. When we first got cable here, we got a bunch of Los Angeles stations. So I grew up seeing the Dodgers, Lakers and Los Angeles Rams play. Am still fans of them all!
Fins fan and I believe it was because of the best QB of all time, Dan Marino.

The Forty Niners!!
They had so many great players when I first started to watch football as a kid. I think the biggest reason I became a niner fan was because of my brother. When I first started to like football as a kid, my brother was a niner fan and I looked up to him, so I became a 49er fan. However, now seeing that I liked the 49ers my brother switched allegiances to the hated Cowboys just to be contrary to me. I could not in good conscience make that jump. Besides, he probably would have switched if I did. I think I made a good choice.

Going to sound crazy...REDSKINS because as a child (age 5) I got a Redskins sweatshirt and it was my favorite and so that is how it all started.

My dad was a huge Rams fan from the old days when he lived in LA. Also Dodgers, not only the LA connec but also because of the Dukes. I've been a Dodgers fan since I can remember. I remember watching the games as a little tyke with my ol' man on TV. I was even a member of the kids fan club.
don't know how I got into the Cowboys, guess they were on TV a lot as a kid. I remember getting in schoolyard fights because there were a lot of Steeler fans at my elementary school! LOL.

I've watched sports with my dad since I can remember. But the formative years were in the 80s and all these teams had great players in that era (or starting in that era). It was a great time for the NFL. Definitely can see why people chose those teams.
Niners. Since the '67.
My dad got season tickets through his lifelong best friend because he (his best friend) had four seats and his dad became ill... besides he (his best friend) was a Raider fan. His pop was a Niner fan and had been since their inception in the 40s. This was when they played in Kezar Stadium. My dad has always supported the local team whereever he lives... he dropped the Rams to become a Niner fan and kept renewing our season tickets until we left CA in 1976.
I don't give up allegiances in the same manner that he does (he's now a Bronco fan living in Colorado.) I've been a Niner fan for 40 years.

The best Dolphins QB ever...
Although, I know it's pointless to bring this up, but I have to defend Elway. Any self respecting Dolphin fan will say Marino, Niners would say Montana, etc.
They're all in the top five for me at least, along with Favre and Johnny U.

Yes, the 80's and through the mid 90's made up some for all the painful ones prior to that. Imagine, though, being a sophomore and junior in high school and your favorite team goes through back to back 2-14 seasons. That's what made '81 all the more sweet!
Well, you can't blame him for switching to the best team ever! :D
I'm just thankful he dropped the damn Cowboys after he left Albuquerque in '97.

49ers, because my family moved back and forth between ABQ and NorCal in my early years, so I became a fan of all the San Francisco teams.

49ers because my mom is from the Bay Area. One of the first NFL games where I really remember understanding the significance and being excited about was the classic 49ers/Cowboys NFC Championship game with Dwight Clark and "The Catch."

My dad took me to Cardinals games when I was younger at Sun Devil Stadium. The Cards have renewed hope with Coach Whiz whose brought excitement and hope to the desert! Love the new Stadium in Glendale...there's nothing else like it!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Niner fan since I can remember. My mom really enjoyed watching Joe Montana so I kinda got hooked on the Niners that way. It was either the Niners or the Cowboys and I have vivid memories of my dad throwing is Cowboy hat at the tv in disgust so I shyed away from them in pure fear alone.

Niners
Quite simply they had the greatest QB to ever strap on a helmet. As a little kid I loved Montana, and to this day have an autographed Montana jersey hanging on my wall in the office.
Additionally, they had Bill Walsh who guided the team to glory. Am such a Niners geek taht I even bought Walsh's book "Finding the Winning Edge" and read it cover to cover.

Wow...am I the only Charger fan in this piece? I was raised in SD and lived there until I was kidnapped and brought to NM.
Anyone remember the song to the tune of the Pointer Sisters "Neutron Dance" I'm just burning doing the Natrone dance?
I thought not.

Another Charger fan here.
I became a fan when I turned on the TV and watched my first football game as a kid (30 years ago). It was the Chargers with Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler, John Jefferson, Kellen Winslow, and more against the hated Broncos. I have been a suffering fan ever since.

I was born and grew up in Philadelphia. Saw my first Eagles game in 1950 (or 51 - I am not as sure as I am about the Phillies game I saw in 1948). I remember listening to the game between the Eagles and the Browns when the new league collapsed and the NFL absorbed the Browns - in 1949 or so - Browns won big time, astounding all those who were certain of NFL superiority.
I remember the Eagles' winning the championship in the 1960 season - the last one the Eagles won. Unlike someone mentioned above, I do not shed old loyalties - I merely add new ones. Sometimes it's hard to keep them straight. So it's Eangles>Patriots>Seahawks, and I hate the Cowboys.
Conflicting loyalties are much harder in college - I have degrees from three schools and other affiliations with three others. Fortunately two of the latter I don't care much about.

I am a big Packers fan having grown up outside of Milwaukee. I try to take in a Packer game every year somewhere. I met another Packer fan this spring at Costco who has 4 season tickets for the Green Bay package (there also is a Milwaukee package as they used to play some of their home games in Milwaukee) and sells some of the games. He purchases the tickets from his brother and brother-in-law who still live in the Green Bay area but no longer go to the games. Difficult to believe. So I am taking a friend from Los Lunas who has never been to Green Bay up for the Carolina Panthers game on 11/18 and going with one of my brothers and his wife who still lives in Wisc. Tail gating in Green Bay is wild. I also have 2 tickets for Green Bay at Dallas on 11/29 for a Thurs. night game. GO PACK GO

Depends on which teams my fantasy football players are on. I guess da Bears because of Urlacher though they piss me off because they insist on playing Rex. Grew up a Cowboys fan (father's influence) even when I lived in D.C. for 7 years. Now I don't really have favorites, but I still follow the boys and I still hate the Broncos (who were my second favorite team when Charlie Johnson was the QB) because I hate Shanahan.

Although I love my Lobos, I have always been a HUGE NFL fan. I actually have a couple of other NFL boards I frequently(much more often than I do here) post on.
I am curious to see what fanbases are represented here the most on the Lair. I know RPS is a Phin Phan, Rick is Skins fan, and Philly is Cowboy fan, but what other teams do people root for?
I'm probably the only one here,
but I am a Serious DieHard Steeler fan myself.

THE AZ CARDINALS. Growingup In ABQ me and my dad went to Cardinals games. The Cardinals have been so terrible over the years...still went to watch nevertheless because they're my team. Under the direction of Ken Whizenhunt and Michael Bidwell things are looking up. Most Cards fans knew that Michael Bidwell would spend the money...he's nothing like his cheap-skate father. Michael is a very good VP of Operations.

I always liked Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm as coaches for the Steelers, so I hope they do well in AZ. I definitely think the Cards are on the rise. Should be interesting to see how they develop.

Being an NFL fan is what started it all, dating all the way back to when I thought a touchdown was when those fat guys up front were able to put their hand on the ground, first Super Bowl that I remember was Pit/LA Rams in 1979. I still have my old football digests that have every stat known to man on a weekly basis. Stats were in my blood at 6 years old. YAFL started when you were 9 back then, so I was forced to play soccer when I was 8, hated it and there was no turning back!:>
Growing up in ABQ I chose the Boys cuz thats who was on TV.The love comes from a little hatred I developed over a certain team in that era. My parents were in a bowling league back then and every week my cuz n I would load up on a couple of those 25 cent footbal helmets. Well the first one I got was the 49'ers. I had never heard of them up to this point. WHen I got home I scoured my Football digests and dug up all the facts I could on this team. Now I had already been a Cowboy fan for about 2 years, but have always had a soft spot for the underdog. I noticed that in 1980 the niners sucked...BAD!! I think they were 2-14 or something.
So I moderately rooted for them(kinda like I did a bit later for the 1-15 Saints. Boy was I surprised when they started winning all these ballgames. Alright good for them. They finished 13-3 that year.
This brings me to "THE CATCH!"!!:Boxer FOREVER I WOULD BE DEVASTATED!! How could this team I kinda pulled for beat my boys and Danny White couldnt pull it out with a minute left to play???
Thus the hatred began. They got better, we slowly got worse. Not too too bad since everyone else in Abq was suffering thru these times right along with me.
To add fuel to the fire??? The family moved to the Bay Area in 1987. These were the worst of times!!! 7-9, 3-13 AND THEN 1-15 IN JIMMUHS FIRST YEAR!!!
I will tell you I have been disgusted at Niner fans for quite some time now. These fickle fans were running around talking smack and I had no retalition to their warfare!!!
So like I said My love for the Cowboys goes right along with the hatred of the Niners.
ITS PERSONAL FELLAS!!! VERY PERSONAL!!!BadSquareTeeth

OOh, wow, where do I begin?!
Well after my Lobos, the Cowboys are my 2nd earliest memory of a sports team.
You see, My mom (What up mom?! ;) is the biggest sports fan I know. Everything I know is because of her. In the early years it was just me and her, and the household was Lobos, Cowboys, Yankees! Thats the way it was. As long as I can rememebr we always watched games on sundays. My earliest (honest) memory I have of watching a NFL game was a NFL ProBowl when I was around 3 yrs old, and I remember seeing the Bengals helmet, and thought is was cool looking. What did I know, I was three. And said it was my favorite team. Mom Dukes promptly educated me and showed me the light to Silver and blue!
Every year, peeps have used the tired blast that I'm a bandwagon fan. And rightfully so, as I lived in the 2nd golden era of the DC dynasty when DC was winning Superbowls in 93. What alot of people don't know is I remember the early days that Aikman was drafted and they sucked!
Like Sanjo, I was a huge stat guy when I was little tyke! I used to always check out NFL books from the Library and do my book reports. I even made books for projects! LOL Most of my immediate fam on my mom's side are DC fans, so you couldn't go against the grain. \
But what probably reinforced my love for the Cowboys was Elementary school, when DC was winning and had a great rivalry with SF, and all the kids would team up and wear their gear and play school yard FB. Proud to say we always beat the SF kids! LOL It was great being a DC fan and having so many kids hate on you just because of your team. And to this day things don't change. People hate the Cowboys, because it's fashionable, LMFAO mindless fools.
As I grew up, and learning of the great history DC has had with Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Danny White, Ed Too Tall Jones, to Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Moose Johnson, Jay Novacek, it just seemed to be the right fit. Plus they got they best NFL colors! I sitll want to get a Perkins (old school Lobo) Cowboys jersey!
The funny thing is to this day I hate Texas, except for the few square miles that surround Irving Stadium!

Lets not forget the Great Tony Dorsett!!! My favorite player of all time!!! Met him at the last Pit/Dal gave when Vinny Green-Nuts choked in the last seconds, after sitting 1st class next to Franco....Maybe more of the same on the Dec trip!!!
