Here's the (recurring) deal: Hire a coach, gain a player
It's that time of the year again, folks.

You know, when the package deals start to pay off.

The big news this time came out of New Mexico late Tuesday, when Scout.com reported Phillip McDonald committed to the Lobos over Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon and Cincinnati. It seems strange on the surface, that a Mountain West school could land an out-of-state prospect over a Big 12 power (Kansas), Pac-10 power (Oregon) and two traditional powers (Oklahoma and Cincinnati) from BCS leagues. But in basketball circles this is hardly a surprise given how Steve Alford filled his final staff opening last month by hiring Chris Walker.

Why is this relevant?

Because Walker spent the past couple of years coaching the T-Mac All-Stars, a summer team out of Houston that featured multiple high-level prospects. One of them, of course, was McDonald, which is why his commitment to the Lobos was merely a matter of time. Will Brown and Isaiah Rusher -- both of whom are also products of the T-Mac All-Stars -- have already committed to New Mexico, meaning Alford's latest hire is proving beneficial to a large degree and on his way to helping New Mexico land the top class in the MWC.

I hope this staff can stay together at New Mexico for a while. If it starts to break up we might not get to see it produce what looks to be some very good players.

My money's on Alford replacing with similarly connected and strong recruiter assistants if and when that happens. Some will move on -- they're too good not to move up the ladder. We'll be just fine.

That's the key to a continuous national power is the ability for these coaches to refill their cupboard with good assistants. In this day, you gotta think that the national powers lose coaches periodically. Even if you build something great, it's hard not to keep the vultures away with the big dollars. There is a saying in Spanish..."Por dinero hasta baila el perro"...Translation, "For the money, even the dog will dance".

808lobo the season has not even started and you are talking about losing coaches.
The head coach is what really counts. Replacing assistants is part of his job and that is what seperates the good coaches from the other coaches. Walker is the gate opener for New Mexico and when the Lobos have success and become nationally recognized as a power house, Alford should have no problems recruiting any where U.S.A.
If you are going to think about something think about the fact that WHEN Alford delivers with the W's the BCS schools will come calling with their money. That is when our ticket prices will sky rocket.................Hopefully! Look at the recruiting Alford did in the short time before Walker got here.

Okay, I'll need to place this phrase with all the others in the "Lair Lingo" board. Keep 'em coming! Only problem is that the english translation doesn't rhyme. Oh well.
