Dallas area standout snags Lobos' final scholarship for 2008

Thursday, September 13, 2007
The Lobos have landed another Texas star.
Nathen Garth, a 6-foot-2 point guard from the Dallas area, orally committed to the Lobos tonight. His former high school coach confirmed Garth snapped up the Lobos fifth and final scholarship available for the 2008 class.
Garth was the first player to commit to playing for Minnesota coach Tubby Smith, but he changed his mind in August to see what other options were available. Coach Steve Alford and assistant Chris Walker, who has quickly established himself as a strong Texas-area recruiter, immediately began courting Garth.
"I'm not surprised he chose New Mexico because he wanted to be closer to home where his dad could get out to see him play," said Pat Washington, who coached Garth last year at Woodrow Wilson High in Dallas. "I think New Mexico was interesting to him because he gets to be part of a great group of guys joining that team and he has a chance to play right away."
Garth averaged 18 points per game his junior year at Woodrow Wilson High. He earned a two-star rating from Scout.com, while Rivals.com rates him a three-star player.
He is attending Hamilton High in Memphis, Tenn., and could graduate in December. If he finished school early, he could join the Lobos after the fall semester.
"He's a very good student and has taken some advanced classes, so he could finish fast but I think he'll probably just wait to go in 2008," Washington said. "Whenever he gets to New Mexico, they'll be very happpy with him. He's very smart and very talented."
The Lobos now have commitments from five players with Texas connections -- shooting guards Phillip McDonald and Curtis Dennis and power fowards Isaiah Rusher and Will Brown will join Garth in the Lobos' lineup.
Point guard J'Covan Brown from Port Arthur, Texas, was slated to make an official visit to UNM next week, but Houston-based recruiting analyst Jimmy Hicks said he doubts Brown will make the trip.
"J'Covan always was a longshot because the University of Texas has the lead on getting him and his dad hates to fly," Hicks said. "I just don't see any dad driving all the way from east Texas to New Mexico, and that's going to be a big factor in his decision.
"If they get J'Covan, that would be great. But right now, they've already got an amazing class. They don't need him. I'm awestruck by the work New Mexico has done already."

I love that last line!
Does anyone know why he "Spurned an off from Minn.?"
808, thanks for posting. I deleted your thread which was posted after this thread started by Badger. No disrespect - just trying to avoid duplicate threads. Hope you don't mind. Thanks again for posting.

I loved it as well, especially coming from Hicks. Just how dumb are Iowa fans anyway?
You might find some clues in RPS's front page article.
BTW - Yeah, thanks 808.

I think that quote can be attributed to a bunch of UNM fans as well. Lots of us are awestruck. Awesome first, complete recruiting season. This may be the start of something really big. Another great class in 09 and we're going to be in great shape for a few years.

BTW - Yeah, thanks 808. Your very good Badger! I didnt think anyone would pick up on that, nice job, honest. Points!
And I'm thinking back soon after Alford was hired and announced his first assistants. We were worried about finding someone to recruit Texas. Apparently we don't have to worry now.

I think we need someone to recruit from OTHER than Texas! LoL jk. I dont care where they come from really but im starting to favor this Texas pipeline! :>

You beat me to it RPS. I was going to express discontent over not developing a California pipeline. Oh well, this way we won't have to recruit head to head against Yakka.

Texas is so crucial for recruiting, in both Football, and basketball.
It's fnny, I've read that UTEP fans think they would have never been able to recruit Texas, if it wasn't for their move to C-USA. I gotta say we recruit Texas alot better than UTEP, AND THEIR IN TEXAS!

I think what weve done is amazing but remember that Walker was brought in with a built in advantage so its kind of unfair to compare him with Miller or Neal. Im sure it will balance out next year. Walker will get his share as well as Noodles and Miller.

Most Texans won't claim El Paso!
Miller and Neal are recruiting players from further away - that works against them. From Houston, you can get to ABQ direct in roughly 2 hours. From DFW, you're here in roughly 1 1/2 hours. Guys from Memphis, California, and other remote areas are typically 4 to 6 hours away after you include the time in the airport waiting for a connecting flight. Even Nate mentioned that now his dad would be close enough to travel to his games, unlike Minnesota.

UOFA is on some elite kids from Cali and Texas in the 2009 class...let the fun begin:D I would imagine UOFA and UNM will get in some really great recruiting battles in the near future!

Who sang "Dizzy"? Was it Tommy James and the Shondells?
That is the only way I can think of to describe how I feel right now. Alfords recruiting absolutely makes me dizzy.:nerdy:look:D

So is J'Covan out of the picture now? Or is Alford going to pull a rabbit out of the hat?

J'Covan is out! He waited too long...and as RPS stated J'Covan lost out when McDonald committed!

Dizzy, I’m so dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s You girl makin’ it spin
You're making me dizzy
First time that I saw You girl, I knew that I just had to make You mine
But it’s so hard to talk to You with fellows hangin’ round You all the time
I want You for my sweet pet, but You keep playing hard to get
I’m going round in circles all the time
Dizzy, I’m so dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s You girl makin’ it spin
You're making me dizzy
I finally got to talk to You and I told You just exactly how I felt
Then I held You close to me and kissed You and my heart began to melt
Girl You've got control on me,cuz I’m so dizzy I can't see
I need to call a doctor for some help
Dizzy, I’m so dizzy my head is spinning
Like a whirlpool it never ends
And it’s You girl makin’ it spin
You're making me dizzy
