Never too early Garish. Believe it or not, the Hicks guy last night, after Philly's interview, spent the next hour going thru this newsletter which lists the top 30 in each class in Houston, including the class of 2011, current HS freshmen. The scouting starts early and they've already identified the elite players at an early age. And those players are included in his newsletter which numerous College coaches subscribe to. Pretty crazy stuff.
I hope I'm misinterpreting your comment that our 09 recruits are under the radar. I haven't looked at the links, but the days of under the radar recruiting are a thing of the past (I think and hope).

Ummm, my rep power is 30. It was 30 when everyone else's was 1 or 2. And it's still 30 now that everyone's rep power is 38 or more. Even a brand new poster with 1 post has a 17. Anyone feel sorry for me?? I thought so. Thank you for being so compassionate to my plight.

I was trying to say that by being 'under the radar', other teams are not going to know what's coming to run them over, roadkill. I hope they don't talk about all the other awesome players we've got. I hope that sounds better.:D

Question guys? I looked up the recruiting info posted here. Not trying to ruffle feathers, and I don't put a lot of stock in recruiting class rankings, but...... PM was rated 87th, and he was our highest ranked player. While I expect us that have a very good squad, based on the rankings, it would seem we are overreacting about our recruting class. Understand, that is not what I think, I am pumped about all the stuff I have heard about these guys. I have seen some of them, actually twice at local eateries, and I have been impressed with their attitudes. I think PM will tear it up. It is my hope that these guys work hard and prepare for each game. I am just saying that based on the rankings only, it seems we may be over hyping our recruiting class??? Yes? No?? Why?

As I've said numerous times, I put little credence in rankings. After the top ten or fifteen, all rankings differ widely. A guy that is 70th on one poll isn't ranked on another. It is politics and very subjective. Who have they seen play? Where are they from? Pooh... What matters is what they do on the court, not the number next to their name in high school.

FYI - I posted the links knowing full-well that I don't take much stock in them. I just thought it was fun to see the info.... :D
As for the "over-hype" question - no, I don't think we're over-hyping our class. Heck, we've got "recruiting experts" like Hicks, Dodd, etal claiming that UNM has come out of nowhere to become a serious player in the recruiting wars! WOOHOO!!! If you compare to recent classes at UNM, this is a HUGE STEP FORWARD!!! Also, if I'm not mistaken, Rusher was considered by many to be Top 50 in 2007 (prior to his prep school route) --- Florida wanted him THIS YEAR! That says alot!!! Just my humble opinion.... :D

Phil's brother mentioned that our class was a Top 5 recruiting class. I think that seems a bit of a stretch. But I believe it is certainly a top 20 to top 25 class. Rusher was a highly acclaimed 4 star player before he pushed out his graduation 1 year. Brown has been in the Top 100 at times in the polls. Phil is 4 stars, top 100. That's 3 guys who have been or are currently top 100. Garth and Dennis are very good players who will open some eyes as well.
You figure the top 15 programs (UCLA, No Carolina, Duke, Texas, Florida, etc.,) pick up 40 to 50 of the top recruits each year. That leaves the other 200 D1 teams fighting it out for the other 50 Top 100 recruits plus all other recruits. If you can land 3 of these types of recruits, you can easily move into the Top 25 recruiting classes. Don't get hung up on the fact our top guy is #87 - that doesn't have any correlation to our standing overall. It doesn't mean 86 teams recruited better than we did. You need to look at the overall depth of talent we've recruited.

Regardless of talent a squad is no better than the teamwork it demonstrates on and off the court and the developement of players who have the potential to be great. Yes, you must have talent, but a lot of teams with highly touted recruits never rise to championship form. I believe that the talent level recruited by this staff is excellent and that with good coaching and good attitudes Lobo basketball can be great. Recruiting is just one (albeit important) part of success.
I am dating myself with this, but back in my hey day of playing I attended 5 Star basketball camp which was the premeir deal back in the day. Of all the guys at that camp who were the most highly recruited, only one dude (Dominque Wilkens) ended up being a great college player. The rest (Holbert, Tissaw, White, etc.) never did much in college and did not make it to the NBA. The rest of that story from a personal perspective is that I never played in college and Domique permanently damaged my self esteem by dunking on my head twice in one game.

I agree with a lot of your opinion except the game has changed so much since Dominique Wilkins played. Players are getting more and more talented everyday and at younger ages at that. Not to mention the parity amongst players and teams at the college level is much more obvious now then back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

Great post Thick. Having Dominque posterize you is nothing to be ashamed of - he did that to a bunch of guys in the NBA, too.
Danny Granger was ranked #200 or so in his recruiting class. Ultimately he made it to the top 20 in his class if you judge the rankings by where the NBA executives chose him in the draft (just talking American players here, some foreign players were drafted ahead of him too). There's another example of why you shouldn't get too hung up on who is better at Age 17.
The comment about talent and results is also very telling. If you had compared the US national team's talent to Puerto Rico's in the Olympics a few years ago, you wouldn't have bothered to play the game. Puerto Rico had no business being on the same court with the US team. The best Puerto Rican player wouldn't have even been invited to the tryouts in the US. Daniel Santiago had a tough time even making Top 10 in New Mexico coming out of his senior year at Del Norte. Yet there they were, putting a beat down on the superstar, highly rated players from the US. Some call it chemistry, others cohesion or teamwork. Whatever you want to call it, it's real. It's up to the coaches to get the right mix of players who all care about each other and will give themselves up for their team.
Just look what Hobson did for our ranking this year.He alone shot us up the charts. All this stuff is fun to talk about and is great for the fans like you and me but in the end classes from 1-200 don't mean SH#$ if you don't play solid D,score, and rebound the ball. I hope were ranked in the top 25 as far as classes because recruit do take interest in that (see Nate and Dennis) when it comes to recruiting. What im saying is that it will help in the public but on the court it doesn't mean bo diddley.
I'll still take a top 10! :)

So is the #87 player actually a better player than #88? How much better is he than #150? Is he better than a guy who isn't even ranked? If so, how could you tell? And how much worse than #27 is he?
Basketball skills are not sequential, nor are they cumulative, and therefore they are not rankable.
Those recruiting rankings are simply a way for someone who has nothing else to offe to make money.
It's a travesty, a sham and a mockery that fans even read them, much less believe them.

You have a situation where two scouts rank one player higher or lower. I'm not very high on ranking myself. However I think McDonald is a lot better than 87th best player. What I look at is the schools coveting these kids. Having seen McDonald play multiple times...he's far and away the best player in the west I've seen besides Anthony Jones and Jrue Holiday!

Very nicely stated. To tell the truth, teamwork is what has made the women's team more enjoyable to watch over the past few years. And they don't have any blue chippers on that team (yet).

It's subjective and never a level playing field... I agree with Lost that these things (ratings) are ridiculous- in fact, the argument could be made that they often do more damage than good. Think of the athlete that buys into the rankings themself... and when that happens how often does that ranking end up meaning squat?
And speaking of that, the only real ranking that means anything is how does an athlete progress while at a university? Did they become a better player, a better teammate, and a better person? At the end of the day, that's what defines an athlete in my book.
