Ili provided a few more details now that the contract has been signed. Nothing much has changed from the original good faith agreement that was announced a few months ago, aside from the incentive and buyout clauses that weren't included at that time. He'll make a lot more money if gets us to the Sweet 16 or an MWC Conference title. That's appropriate. Krebs is doing a good job to reward strong performance.

Hummm........ ROUND Y ROUND. At least they are talking about our Coach and staff, and if they do good, a cookie, then compare Mcays days. These guys need some spicing up. Thanks 505.

I don't mind the story. It shows that UNM is a "have" and not a "have not" as far as men's basketball. We can pay with the best of them.

That's fine, as long as we can also play with the best of them.

Based on early signs, it looks as though we will be able to do that.

If Alford quits, he must give 30 days' notice and the university is only required to pay his base salary until he officially leaves his job. The contract does not include a buyout, which means Alford and his future employer do not have to compensate UNM for terminating his contract early.

Does anybody else find this paragraph unusual?

He didn't have one at Iowa, did he?

unless he rebuilds UNM into a top 25 program - because there won't be any top program looking for him until he does.

And if he does, would we complain if he then left? (How about Neal to replace him in that case?)

And he may do very well here and decide he wants to stay for a while. (Please, let it happen.)

Hopefully Neal and/or Walker are still around if SA moves onto bigger things. We should be so lucky.

All things being equal a buyout clause would be nice. That being said, however, this doesn't really bother me at all. Let's suppose Alford enjoys phenomenal success here at UNM. Krebs would undoubtedly give him a raise and since there are only about 25 teams in the entire country who currently pay their head coach more than us the type of potential suitor who would be willing to pay that kind of money would not be swayed by a typical buyout clause.

If he doesn't enjoy success, well nothing to worry about there. Buyout clauses come much more into play when you have a situation like Reggie Theus and nmsu.

If this was a deal breaker for Alford then so be it. UNM had to have this type of hire and so far Alford has done quite well it would seem.

Go Lobos!!!

The successful scenario you described above is the kind of problems I like to have. Good post Wanderlust.

Great post, Wanderlust. If SA has great success here, the job will be very attractive and we should have no problem attracting a quality coach.

I see Alford here for a while, and I see him having a successful run too, but the only job I see him jumping early for is Indiana. That will someday be his home, hopefully after New Mexico is back on top.
You just see him and Indiana in the same time frame sometime. I think I would have a hard time begrudging him that, after we are back in good shape.

Agree wholeheartedly burro! Alford will stay until it's time for him to head the the IU retirement center...
man I hope so!
