View Full Version : Today's shirts n skins game

Well I made it to the shirts n skins game today. Wow, what a great experience it was. It's such a cool thing that Alford has the guys do this. Here is what I saw:
1) JR and Pegues jawed at each other quite a bit, especially at the beginning. I don't think they liked how each other were calling fouls.
2) Wills made some NICE passes. One to TD for a dunk and a couple more for easy layups.
3) JR caught a couple great lob passes from DP for dunks. One was off the backboard that JR got up SO high to grab and through down. JR is so fast to the rim. His many other dunks were impressive as well.
4) Harris, Nweke, and Pegues bring alot of size. We won't be getting bullied around inside like we did last year.
5) All the players were very cool and went around and signed autographs after the game.
I talked to Silvy afterwards and he said the next and last shirts and skins game will be at 4:30 before the BYU game. They are giving the guys the week after that off and then practice starts.

Thanks for the update. Good time to be a Lobo fan. Our football team is kicking butt and coming off a real nice road win and we have real hope for our basketball team. The howl and basketball games are right around the corner.
Nice recap sir! I got videos and some pics of the football game and S n S's. You guys are going to love the videos of sns's!
Nice recap, dcrowley!
In addition, I'll note that the newer guys looked more in shape and quicker than they did a couple of weeks ago. Nweke continues to trim down and, while still a hoss, looks very much like he'll be able to get up and down the floor with an uptempo style (if indeed that is what this team ends up running).
I spoke with my man JB (Justin Benson) who is taking classes here at UNM and is on track to graduate in a year. Props to him for getting the classwork done and since it is being done here, it would seem to be a little reversal of some of the negative APR we've been hearing about. He told me he's taking some tough courses, but he should have 12 hours to go in the spring and is confident he'll be done in May.
He also said he's been spending some time around the team informally and thinks the guys are pretty tight and close- he doesn't think there will be any internal problems or infighting. He is geeked on Kem Nweke (a fellow Gulf Shores guy) and says this year will be good but "wait til next year." I told him the guys coming in were all from Houston, and he said, "That's a good thing; you know we can ball in Houston!"
I left early to wrap the tailgate up, but I left very impressed with the progress these guys are making.
Bloo beat me to the punch in terms of the adds I was going to make to DCrowley's observations. (BTW, nice post DCrowley! Rep points coming, if it means anything to you.) The observation I was going to add is that Pegues and Nweke were in much better shape. They were able to get up and down the court w/o having to walk the way they did 2 weeks ago. They're progressing quickly - great to see that. Props to both of them for working hard on their conditioning. And Nweke is indeed looking much more svelte than he did a couple of weeks ago (I like that word (svelte) - kind of has a Swedish sound to it, which reminds me of Swedish chick). Anyway, I was confused when I saw Nweke the first time today. I really had a tough time figuring out who the new player was. He's looking much more like a BB player.
There was one other thing that created a buzz in the Pit today, and it had nothing to do with basketball. The women's Volleyball team made an appearance at the scrimmage and the Lair fella's suddenly developed a severe case of ADD, except Philly who was accompanied by his beautiful girlfriend. Rick especially seemed to be a big fan of the sport. He boasted that he had actually been to one of their games this year, but when pressed for details on the score or the opponent that night, he drew a blank. Dr. M was last seen frantically searching for a bottle of Ridlin (sp?) to help Rick with his medical malady.
(I like that word (svelte) - kind of has a Swedish sound to it, which reminds me of Swedish chick).
Alf has given me permission to take all of his rep points for honoring the Swedish chick until such time that the Swedish chick is restored as his signature or whatever the heck he is going to do with that.

What's taking Alf so long to restore his Swedishchick signature??
If he doesn't restore the sig soon, he may be first user banned on this site for conduct unbecoming a Lairdawg.

I was at the scrimmage for the first part at least. I was sitting to far away to differentiate some of the players. Faris had a couple of nice jumpers and there were some good dunks by different lobos. I think Darren Prentice was dribbling a little too much. There was one time that he had JR wide open in the corner, but instead decided to take a very difficult shot.
Right.
Where's my rep? :horn)
Bloo, my rep power is permanently stuck at 30. So I can't give you more rep points until RPS restores my true rep points of 1200+. Besides, I told Crowly I would rep him. After repping Crowley, I may only have negative Rep points available, and I don't think you want any of those. :D

Yes, but rep power remains the same each time you give it, as an administrator, anyway. So give me 30 points. I deserve it.

I feel like such a pimp when I give you rep points. Just gave you some rep points. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go take a shower.

And thanks for clearing me up on the fact that in volleyball, they actually use a ball! I hadn't noticed...

I saw that there were a bunch of very cute women at the game.. That was the volleyball team? I was thinking to myself "damn, it's good to be a bball player!"
Thanks for the rep points, guys. But how do I spend them?
I'm looking forward to the pictures and video, RPS!

Those VB chicks weren't that hot.................
P.S.
I was impressed with Nweke, and his improvement from the last scrimmage. He has a nice soft shooting touch, and can can get down the court in a hurry with the break.

Was a good scrimmage , Very competitive early and settled down as the guys got tired.
Willis is a great find, he is very althletic, just hard to notice with JR,TD around.
Gary had a good scrimmage as well and hit a few treys.
Harris had some great alley oop dunks and layups, Silvey said that team is coming together and that Harris will be pushed quite a bit when the coaches are around to watch more.
Martinez is a great kid , easy to talk to.

Gary is going to be a pleasant surprise this year. He is big for a guard, and can stroke the three. Pegues looked 100% better this scrimmage. He couldn't even dunk it the last one, but he had a couple of nice dunks this time. Nweke looks like he has lost 10 pounds since the last scrimmage. Too bad he will probably redshirt this year.
Prentice and JR had some good eye contact that resulted in some awesome alley oops. Hope to see that a lot this season!

and he could barely run up down the court at the Davalos Center. I am not sure how much weight he has lost but he sure ran the floor alot better. Pegues seem to have a off scrimmage on Saturday, but is not afraid of contact at all.
Faris looks great does he?

Tough enough for our members to make out some of the Spanish phrases that get tossed in once in a while, but there's no chance they'll make out the 100% Spanish messages. Lido, don't make us pass an "English Only" rule on this board. Besides, I can't fit the entire Spanish language dictionary in the Lair Lingo forum. Con much cuidado, indeed.

You best not be making an "English Only" rule !!! It's about time that we, Americans, start to embrace other languages.....we cannot and should not be a society of one language. And what better than to learn Spanish.....the second most spoken language in NM (atleast I think it's the 2nd most spoken....LOL!!!) :D

Hey, I started it by saying a macho stupid thing that could be offencive to some and LIDO was telling in code,so to speak, to watch out with those kid of jokes. There are more Latin Americans per capita in N.M. than any other race. N.M. was the first state to be so 12 years ago.

If Yakka shows, this is a top 5 recruiting class.
And as posted somewhere, the action in the Pit should begin around 4:30, although I think those of us at the tailgate will be prepared for a 4:00 start.

How can you go wrong with those people in such a short time. I mean we've really put this together fast. I dont know how many TRM gets every week and im sure they blow us away but for a few tailgates im impressed. This week we should push 20-25 people. Id say last week we had around 15 at one point and that was for sac st. BYU should be our biggest of the year for sure!

Yakka will have to do the running commentary on the video this time. Rick and Roob aren't ready for prime time. Getting distracted by VB players shows their lack of professionalism. Yakka, on the other hand, is a pro at staying focused on the bb action. Philly's good at that too, btw.

Bad representations of both. From Rick's picture I was expecting to meet a longshoreman who would carry a keg of hefeweizen in each hand to the party. Rick is much more refined than that. He only carried one keg.

I was afraid someone else was thinking you were having a vulgar thought and that they would make an inappropriate comment, completely inconsistent with your outstanding moral character.
