...somebody needs to slap Mr. Parrish around a few times!!!
From Gary Parrish mailbag:
"...From: Carlos
New Mexico getting Phillip McDonald and other Houston-area players with help from hiring (their AAU coach) Chris Walker is not even a story anymore. It's the norm now. This is old news. Kansas hired Ed Manning as director of basketball operations to get Danny Manning. Kansas was rejuvenated ever since. John Calipari hired Milt Wagner as his director of basketball operations to entice Dajuan Wagner. Calipari also offered a scholarship to Arthur Barclay, who was Wagner's best friend. Shall I go on? OK, recently Kentucky hired Tracy Webster from Illinois and Darius Miller verbally committed a day later. Package deals are old news.
[Parrish response] Of course they are old news. I could list 10 more similar situations, no problem. But just because package deals are normal now doesn't mean they shouldn't be acknowledged, if for no other reason that it helps put into context why somebody would choose to play basketball at New Mexico instead of Kansas..."

The Example of Chris Walker would be a reason for McDonald to chose UNM over KU.

I don't think it's a slam at all. More than 90 percent of all fans would ask why a player would choose New Mexico over Kansas, so he's just answering the question for them. Big deal.

It was a slam. It was someone in the media saying "New Mexico is a nobody". We know what a great place UNM is. Now it is up to SA and the team to prove it to the rest of the country. I'm betting he does it in the next three years.
I agree with Lost.
I didnt consider it a slam at all.
I thought the dude who wrote the letter was WAY off, but the response was acceptable.
Why someone chose a school is as important as the school they chose. Its simple -- someone in NY is not going to understand why a player would choose NM over Kansas.
FYI -- Its the same feeling you all had when you heard Hodson had originally committed to Pepperdine. And dont tell me that you didnt think to yourself -- Why would he go to Pepperdine?
Same thing!!

Anyone from the other side of the Country who doesn't know anything about UNM basketball what so ever is someone that has no idea why kids are looking at UNM. It just makes that comment so laughable....because there's no credibility with that comment because of the lack of knowledge and it's pointless trying to reason with that garbage that poster wrote.

I think KU and other fans of other programs who cannot understand how UNM is getting kids like Phillip McDonald will regret anything negative they said about Coach Alford and his staff. And I cannot wait until it happens....UNM is already getting a lot of respect from a lot of top college coaches. Starting in 2008 I would like to see a home and home with KU for starters!

Garish is correct Rick...Texas Western did beat KU before facing Kentucky! KU had JOJO White at the time and beat in last few seconds!

Only in America could Garish concede defeat, only to be over-ruled and declared the winner after all. Respect to both Garrish and Yakka. And to Rick, too.

According to the movie, the Texas Western win was "controversial" because JoJo made the game winner only to be ruled no good because he stepped on the side line. BTW, the Texas Western - Kansas game was a regional final. The final 4 participants that year were Texas Western, Kentucky, Duke, and Utah. :D

what's controversial about stepping on the sideline...that's outta bounds...that would be a rule, not a controversy...i guess some people still can't handle the fact that haskins and texas western won it all.

I don't know the actual circumstances, but movies often embellish on things. They don't say "this is a true story", they say "this is based on a true story" or "this is based on actual events". I've been trying to find the info online, but haven't had any luck yet.
