Up 27-7 at half, nearing the end of the 3rd the rope is slipping through their fingers..27 21 over Louisville. We need to keep beaing these BCS conf teams, hopefully they can hold on.

Kind of a wild game. After looking like they were out of it in the 1st quarter, it looked like Louisville would come back a couple of times.
Louisville's defense is horrid. Maybe the worst I've ever seen.

WTF is up with Utah? They can beat good OOC teams, but crap out against UNLV and Utah St.?

I saw a little of that game and they mentioned Brian Johnson the QB was out for a game (probably the UNLV game). Maybe that's why they seemed so up and down?
They had a brain dead play at the end of the 2nd quarter. No time-outs, 10 seconds left, easy field goal range. Instead they go for a td, but throw it underneath to the check down back and clock runs out. Could have had 3, almost for sure (they've got a good FG kicker), but got greedy and ended up with zero. It almost cost them the game. Louisville made it a 6 point game on two occasions.
For anyone that saw the end of the game, why in the heck did the Louisville coach do a 2nd onsides kick with over 3 minutes left and a few time-outs remaining instead of kicking it deep when your defense was all fired up? They had just held Utah to a 3 and out on the previous possession.
That was more their unduing than anything else. Still a good win for Utah.
Maybe this is the year both Wyoming and UNM have success in conference? TCU and Utah both have 2 losses already.
A win at Wyoming would certainly be a quality win.

If I had Louisville's defense, I'd probably do the same thing. You're right that they were playing pretty well at times in the game, but the D was just as likely to give up another score. Also, you can't risk Utah going on a drive and running down the clock. Louisville couldn't stop Utah's run game, which coming into that game was something like 100th in the nation?

I've seen a lot of other defenses that were worse Louisville's

Like who? In all seriousness.
Utah is one of the worst offensive teams in the country and Louisville made them look like 2004 USC.

Are you kidding me? San Diego St for one. Louisville's whole team has lost thier confidence...especially on the Defensive side of the ball. I guess you can ask USC why couldn't stop Stanford yesterday!

I'll give you SDSt but Utah is 85th in total offense and 89th in rushing and you have to consider that is after their stats were inflated after the Louisville game!
Louisville's D:
Pass efficiency National Rank 115 Stat 152.61
Pass defense 108 283.33
Rush " " 70 161.17
Scoring " " 89 30.67
Total 99 444.5
USC did slow Stanford for most of the game, Stanford's offensive numbers from the game aren't impressive. The last drive was fairly impressive given the cirucmstances but USC still held on that drive until the last throw to the corner.

USC didn't stop them when they needed to....thus game over. Stanford won the game...thus the stats aren't really that important! It didn't help that Booty was giving away points. Stanford still made the plays to win the game!

Actually, USC's defense played pretty good. Only gave up half as much yardage as they gained. It was five turnovers that killed USC.

I agree. That's what I was trying to get at.

Those Utah season stats were compiled with Tommy Grady at QB, who is one of the 10 worst in Division I. With Johnson back, and the emergence of Mack as a lead running back, which Utah didn't have for the first four weeks, Utah is a much better offensive team right now than they were two weeks ago. And that showed against Louisville. With Grady at QB and without Mack running the ball, they don't beat Louisville.

Injuries have hampered Utah this season. Those stats I put up there include their performance against Louisville.

Yes, that's correct. And it shows just how bad they truly were before they started getting guys back and before they got desperate and decided not to redshirt Mack.

Yup, maybe one of the more inconsistent teams this year. I think you're right that if they can get their feet under them they will improve offensively. It'll be interesting to see if they can build off this win, because I don't put too much stock in making Louisville's defense look bad. I think could we suit up the mod's of this site and some YAFL kids and score on that D. :D
