MEN'S SOCCER Lobos Defeat UNLV, Stay Unbeaten in League Play

University of New Mexico defender Simon Ejdemyr has taken a certain amount of grief from his men's soccer teammates this season.
That's because his only two goals of the year came on penalty kicks.
Saturday he changed that as the Lobos beat UNLV, 2-1, at University Stadium in the back end of a doubleheader following the U.S. Women's National Team's draw with Mexico.
"They've kind of been giving me a hard time," said Ejdemyr, who was sporting a large welt under his right eye that required seven stitches to close after he took an elbow to the face. "They say I don't score real goals."
So to prove them wrong, he raced upfield and put back a rebound of a hard shot from Blake Danaher in the 70th minute to put New Mexico up, 2-0.
"I had to show them I could score a real goal," he said with a smile.
At the time, it didn't appear the Lobos (9-3-1, 4-0-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) would need the insurance, but after packing the defense all match, the Rebels (5-7-2, 1-4-0) pushed forward and got a sloppy goal in the 83rd minute that did not please UNM coach Jeremy Fishbein.
"I thought we really kept our composure until we let up a sloppy goal," he said.
In reality, however, UNLV's play disappointed Fishbein more than that of his own team.
"They just packed it in," he said of the Rebels. "They played not to lose rather than to win. It's hard to beat a team that does that. That's never been our philosophy here. In all my years of college coaching, I've only seen that done once before and that was when they were here last year. To me, it's not promoting the game and it doesn't develop your players."
But the Rebels don't have the offensive weapons New Mexico enjoys.
For instance, Chris Wright scored a goal after getting only assists the previous two games.
It extended his scoring streak to eight games with seven goals and two assists in that span. New Mexico has gone 7-0-1 during that stretch.
Wright squeezed off a shot that UNLV goalkeeper Calvin Bailey had briefly before it slipped between his hands and dribbled over the line 34 minutes into the game.
"My goal every game is to be involved in the offense," he said. "As long as I can find a way to contribute this offense, then I'm doing my job."
