The University of New Mexico men's golf team seems to have picked up in Hawai'i right where it left off in Arizona two weeks ago. The Lobos shot an 11-under-par 277 today, and sits in second place after the first round of the 33rd John Burns Intercollegiate being played at the Leilihua Golf Course in Wahiawa, Hawai'i. New Mexico trails Arizona by one shot.

UNM had a better score than three teams ranked in the Golf World/Nike college top 25: No. 14 Arkansas (280), No. 16 Colorado State (287) and No. 22 UNLV (287). The Lobos are ranked No. 52.

"We played today's round just like that final round in Tucson," said head coach Glen Millican, referring to UNM's final round at the Arizona Intercollegiate Feb. 3. "We had a pretty solid effort all-around. We're in pretty good shape."

Leading the way for the Lobos at the John Burns Intercollegiate was Jon Sauer who shot a 4-under 68 to tie for eighth. James Erkenbeck is tied for 12th after a 4-under 69 while Tom Carlson, Steve Saunders and Parker Pemberton all shot 2-under 70 and are tied for 20th. Nick Geyer posted a 1-over 73, tying for 45th.

Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus has the first-round lead, shooting an 8-under 64.

The second round of the three-round event starts Thursday at 11:00 a.m. MST.
