Lobo Watch '07
Coach: Jeremy Fishbein
Last year's record: 14-4-3
Overall record: 170-80-21 (.666)
Record at UNM: 75-20-11 (.759)
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships: Four
NCAA Tournament bids: Four
NCAA Tournament record: 8-4
Key additions: Diego Barrera (Sr., MF); Michael Reed (RS Fr., MF).
Returning starters: Nine
Key home matches: Sept. 14, 7 p.m., vs. Washington; Sept. 16, 3 p.m., vs. defending national champion Cal-Santa Barbara; Oct. 5, 7 p.m. vs. Denver.
Key road matches: Sept. 22, 8 p.m., vs. San Fran.; Nov. 18, 1 p.m., vs. Denver.
Outlook: New Mexico, which owns the country's best winning percentage over the past three years at .828 (49-7-8), has relied on a stingy defense over that period, led by Hermann Award semifinalist Andrew Boyens. But he's now a backline starter for Major League Soccer's Toronto FC, leaving the Lobos with a huge gap to plug. Still, expect UNM to once again be adept at stopping the attack as Simon Ejdemyr steps into a leadership role. Zach Tierney proved to be a strong defender as a freshman, while junior Mike Porter from Las Cruces will slide back to defense from the midfield.
