I love the perspective you guys bring. It is always fun to see who will do what, and to watch players develop. I am more out of touch this year, as I have not been to the howl or any scrimmages. Looking forward to the games, and wouldn't you know it, I will probably be late on Thursday! :-(
Concerning my outlook this year:
Angela: There is no one that is a bigger fan of Angela than I. I think she has so much potential. I always have a few favorites, usually not the team stars, and Angela is one of those. She does a lot of little things I appreciate. Last year, I saw great improvement. However, she was only a sophmore, and it is usually in the junior and senior years that players really seem to come into their own. I hope no less for Angela.
Dionne & Val: Dionne is awesome, no 2 ways about it. Val is young, and needs a lot of development mostly defense and transition fundamentals. The reason I grouped them together is medical. It is always hard to know what type of production these players will have this year, largely due to medical issues. It is possible Dionne will play like she never had the surgery, or even better. Then again, she may not. It is a hard call, but things are different for her. Val needed development time, and I think some of the early practice time was spent in recovery. Who knows how much this will affect her.
Amy & Brandi: Seasoned and will do much to define this team and the season we have, perhaps more so than even Dionne could. Having guards that can control the ball is really important against better competition. I remember last year down in Az, we ended up playing up between the 3 pt line and half court due to good defensive pressure. It prevented us from being successful. These two will have to be able to break that pressure and get us into scoring position against these type of teams, and good enough from the outside to force other teams out on us from a zone.
Sophmores: Are sophmores. Again, imho, many players do not really come into their own until their junior and senior seasons. Usually refered to as the sophmore slump. We are going to have to have one or two step up no though. I would not be surprised to see any of our sophs step it up this year and have a breakout year. However, I would not be surprised to see them struggle much like Angela did last year. Almost the good game/bad game routine.
Freshman: Are freshman. It is usually a special player that comes in and contributes heavily as a freshman. I hope we have about 4 here, and 1 redshirt waiting for next year. I really don't know, but based on what I have read, and seen, there is some help there, but not someone to dominate or be a major contributor yet.
Amanda Adamson: Truly and unkown quanity to me. She seems to be a player, and I enjoyed seeing her with the team last year. I hope I enjoy watching her as much out of the dress and heals. I hear she is a good outside shooter (much needed imo), and she does have college experience. Possible she could be a big piece of the puzzle this year.
Other factors: Defense. I really like great defense. I am not sure what defensive face we will have this year, but with a young team, I think the fundamentals are going to be so important. We will have to have good rebounding and defense to be successful. I am also anxious to see what coach is going to do with the offense this year, as so much of our scoring could come from the inside.
My Favorites: I love watching the entire team, but Angela, Amy & Eileen are my favorites at this point. I love their efforts.
Soon, we will all get to see the start of the season, and what will be the Lady Lobos this year. I plan to enjoy the heck out of it, and I hope all of you guys are giving me crap at the end of the year for thinking this was a rebuilding year! :-)
Go Lobos!
