"THE" UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO
WELCOME TO THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT...WHERE nmsu SUCKS!!!
Why would he commit to Iona over us? We had to have eased off his trail if that's the case. Sure Iona is a great school...but not quite at the same level as us...
wtf?
EML
Still has to get eligible/cleared. He has a tough case with the clearinghouse to get eligible.
He couldn't come to UNM even if he wanted to because he's not cleared and our semester started yesterday. It's not a choice of Iona over UNM. UNM wasn't an option basically.
Heres the life of recruiting. You win a few, lose a whole lot more. But, its "interesting" when a kid chooses Iona over MWC schools, Pac12 schools, and SEC schools. Im not one to do the whole sour grapes thing but this is weird. I dont care that we didnt win. I think its weird that he chose Iona over some of the schools on his list.

Brain skip.

Crap, Mike right. I was forgetting Obij. My bad.

All that said, I'm sure one could become available if the right recruit came along. I think we all have an idea of how that would work out.
Guys, if you "recruit" a player you cannot turn and make that player "walkon". Dads son or not, it's in the NCAA rule book. Bryce will be on scholarship at UNM and deservedly so.
The fact is, every year that Alford has been coach we never go into the next season with a full stable. If I was Alford I would over recruit by 1 every year but people freaked out when he started doing that.

It wouldn't be fair to Bryce to not give him a scholly. He wouldn't be able to eat and attend study hall with the rest of the team thats on scholarship. May just be me, but I don't think that's the right way to go about things.
I didnt know Curtis Dennis had also transferred to Iona
Here's a link to more on the Pelle decision. It confirms that there is no decision from the NCAA on his eligibility at this point, meaning it is indeed the case that UNM could not have been an option for him. Any school he chooses to attend right now would have to accept partial qualifiers in order for him to enroll. Obviously, we know NMSU does and it's apparent that Iona does, as well.

Good luck with that, Norvelle.
Iona doesnt require you to play defense, so it's a perfect fit for CD.
Nope. Check the rule book. After you activatly recruit a player then you can't place that player on a lotto scholarship or something to that equilivent.
Show me one case where a player was recruited then chose to take a lottery scholarship or something equilivent. If that was the case then every school would be shuffling players around each year and have 4 walk ons on some type of lottery scholarship to bypass the allotted 13 scholarships.

True, he can't be on another (academic) scholarship after that, but he can pay his own way fully and be on the team, which obviously dad has the funds to do. See the link below for one such example.
It's just a tricky situation having your own kids on the team. I don't envy it. Plus, it's two kids with two different situations and so each one will be viewed/handled differently.

Well, if Pelle makes it we could easily see Iona in the Paradise Jam.
I'm with you LoboMike, nobody ever said anything about being on the lottery scholarship, but he could pay his own way (money would be coming from the same place anyway, and I'm sure having an Aaron Gordon type player would trigger enough bonuses in Alford's contract to make him come out ahead anyway).
I believe the rule you're thinking of Mark is along the lines of: an un-recruited walk-on can be on the lottery scholarship as long as he is only practicing with the team. Once he starts to play he counts against the limit.
Look. Bryce is on scholarship and that isnt going to change. Hate to break it to you but I wouldn't count on Gordon coming to UNM.
