Holy crap that's crazy!!!!!!! Wonder why??
"Serious health issues" and will not coach this year.

I would guess its more medical issues. Poor guy. I dislike Utah, but he was a great coach.
"Heart issues"
Sounds like his career is done. Hes 64.

That's too bad. Helluva coach.
That St. Louis game just lost a little bit of excitement for me. Hope they can stay competitive without him.
Oh no - not surprised, but sad he has to do that.

A great coach, and a Lobo villain to be sure, but one everyone could respect.
God speed with good health Big Rick.
Sad to hear, he had some great teams at Utah that almost won the whole thing. It was good to see him in the Pit last year and even better to hear him talk about the respect he had for Lobos and the fans. He will be missed.
Good luck Mr. Majerus, I hope you recover and can enjoy the rest of your life with your family. Best of luck sir!
He has struggled with his health since he 'retired' from Utah. Hope he stabilizes and goes into broadcasting like Bob Knight did. Jim Crews takes over. He was Indiana asst when Alford played there, I'm sure they are still tight. Interesting to see if series is renewed since Majerus had indicated he was interested.
Best wishes and Good Luck to Rick, he is a wonderful coach!

He provided some memorable moments during his tenure at Utah. He was doing good things with the st. Louis team as well.
Hope he is able to recover....and lose some weight.
He didn't look so good last time he was here.
Get well Rick!

Thick Rick is right up there with the Bear, Moose Stubbin, and Irv Brown in the list of great characters that made Lobo basketball so enjoyable over the years.
Weight problems and heart problems go hand in hand at that age. At the post-game presser last year he came into the media room and he was completely gassed. He was having trouble breathing and it took him about 5 minutes before he was finally back to normal. After the conference they picked him in a vehicle to drive him up the outside ramp to the team bus. Unless he miraculously loses 100+ pounds, I think he's coached his final game.

Here was a real coach, he could make a team out of good prospects into a great team to challenge all the way to the finals at the NCAA tournament. I would hope he gets back into coaching, there are a lot of young men that need a coach like him to raise their play up a few steps. I never liked to play his teams but beating them was always a thrill. Get well coach Majerus all basketball needs you. We will miss you at the SL vs UNM game this year!
Coach Alford has always reminded me of him, raising players to get the most out of them and building to his teams strengths!
A sad day for college basketball today. I HATED those Utah teams he coached- but he was a damn fine coach. You will be missed Coach Majerus, get yourself right.
Great heart-felt article.
