    Paige Cashin 2013 recruit

Per Journal, visited UNM this weekend. 6'5" post from Ohio. #20 post per ESPN/Hoopgurlz. Termed her visit "amazing". Father says she has her final five in mind, but "the bar has been set pretty high this weekend".

Just some more evidence that the program has entered a recruiting level far beyond what we've previously seen. Nothing but blue sky ahead.

Sanchez appears to be tapping the program's recruiting potential - something we haven't seen in a long time. She's turning heads.

All this recruiting is great news for the Lobos, but what about this year's team? I never see any discussion at all. Seems like pretty much a consensus wash out/lost year with much less capable players based on all the comments/focus on 2013/1014 and 2014/2015. Certainly haven't had the presence in the post over the last few years and have a big hole in the current team for recruits that simply quit from the first 2010/2011 "lost year". It seems that the prevailing view is that the new recruits will help clear the deck after the current players move on. Thoughts?

    Kind of unfair, no?
We talked and bragged last year about Shumpert, Peacock, et al and the general gist was this year will be better than last if we can avoid the injury bug. We'll miss Lauren, Porsche, and Nikki and the incredible finish they had to a really tough Senior season, but Deeva, Whitney and the transfers will bolster the holes left by their departure, and the team will start to shine. This is a great topic, but should probably be a thread of it's own. We even have JP's brother responding to us here on the site....as the season gets closer, all the speculation will start anew...patience my young Paduan...the excitement is coming.

I don’t think that is an accurate assessment of this year’s team.

I think what is accurate is there are a large number of unknowns for the 12/13 season. Of the 15 players listed on the roster, 7 are new. We have essentially no experienced point guard (I count Jayme Jackson as a 2-guard more than a point). We have lots of questions in the post: Whitney coming off an injury, Unsure of Ebony’s status to play this season, Jordyn & Khadijah are freshmen. Lots of questions yet to be answered—and maybe not until the conference season starts.

On top of that is the biggest question of all: Sara’s health. If we can have ahealthy Sara and Caroline on the wings, this team might take a surprisingly large step forward. The performance in the MWC tournament last season gives a lot to believe in if we stay healthy and a couple of the seven newcomers show they can be contributors.

Don't know if this speaks to Lobo fans perhaps looking past the 2012-13 season, but over the past few years I have visited a couple of dozen school-specific women's basketball forums and have learned this:

The overriding common opinion among women's basketball fans of nearly every university, with UCLA perhaps the only exception, is how amazing the school's recruits are and how much each is going to bring to the program and, oh my God, I can't wait until these kids get here. Second-team all-league players who are 5'6" and averaged 4.9 points per game in high school are going to bring vital intangibles; Hoopgurlz 100 players are always undervalued at #28 when they are clearly better than #19 and will dust Brittany Griner aside justlikethat.

Kids who DON'T sign with the home team no doubt had something wrong with them in the first place. Recently, a highly-regarded player coveted by a Sweet 16 team from the West committed to another school for 2013. The immediate response on that school's forum was that this was good news because, posters believed, this meant the player had been told she wasn't wanted because a nationally-ranked player they are also pursuing had no doubt informed their coaches behind the scenes that she was going to come, despite their having been no announcement. Of course, that HAS to be it .

Along the same lines, another common theme is that new coaches are always valued more than old coaches. Last off-season, Virginia fans were ecstatic that Joanne Boyle left Cal to join UVA. Cal fans were overjoyed that Boyle was leaving and thrilled that former Boyle assistant Lindsey Gottlieb was going to "come home" from UC-Santa Barbara.... where she had worn out her welcome with Gaucho fans who were probably as excited by her "promotion" to the Pac-12 as Gottlieb was.

What does it all mean? Couldn't say. Perhaps women's basketball fans are future-oriented and filled with hope for better things to come. I guess all sports fans are, but on the women's fan forums the concept is almost uniformly taken to the max.

Wow, that is the total opposite of what I have gotten. It seems most have been very positive abaout this years team and expectations, much moreso than what I may be personally. I am quite anxious over this years squad and what it will look like. This has been voiced several times, as well as some who think we are going to be conference champs or top 3. Maybe I am just not paying enough attention. :-)

Really? Where is any discussion of it? Haven't seen much discussion at all about this year. Really like looking forward to 2013-2015 (and the excitement that goes along with that) but real games start in a few months.

We had several discussions toward the end of the season, If Sara is healthy...If Whitney is healthy...will Deeva got that extra year... Funky sent us video of Jordan Peacock and we had links to info about the other signees as well. I don't think we did a lot on specific expectations, but like 2by said we all knew there would be question marks...health will be right up there with can they contribute. As the team made their run at the tourney, That became the focus and the recruiting thing kind of went into hiatus. Now we know who we added and lost (golobos.com roster) and we'll see how they play, and we'll speculate as the season gets closer and we hear form the staff and UNMSID. But in the meantime....there is the recruiting news for next year and beyond. Few things bolster hope more than speculation.

Article this morning in Journal about verbal from Kianna. Also said that fills al the schollies. Uno in a recent post hinted strongly about a verbal from a 6'5 post from Ohio coming soon. Assuming it is Paige and she wants to come brings ?'s regarding numbers. Are other things in the works?? Would like to have them both, but will numbers allow?? And does PT become a big concern?? Anyway, saw a pic of Paige setting a screen that brings back some memories. Katie pick

Also was a blurb in there about Ebony being eligible in 2013-2014. Guess at this point did not win her appeal to play this year.

May have been an either/or with Paige and Kianna offered the final scholarship with first one to commit getting it. Happens every year with nearly ever team in college sports.

last I checked, commits are just that, commits. We've seen players make last minute decisions in prior years.

Why not have 7 or 8 players on the ready (to sign) with 6 open schollies? I'm sure players have contingency plans as well.

Couple years back, we had 2 or 3 posts ready to sign, but one committed and the others went elsewhere upon her committment, then we didn't sign any of them.

I say keep them all in the fold ready to pull the trigger. Things happen and spots become available throughout the year. (see Emily Stark)

Just to bring this to a conclusion, this from Peach State/Hoopgurlz:

Paige Cashin to South Florida: This week South Florida coach Jose Fernandez and his staff reached into Ohio and scored a verbal pledge from 6-4 center Paige Cashin of Newark, Ohio. Cashin is a skilled post player who has the ability to face the basket and knockdown a mid-range jump shot. She will give South Florida length on the defensive end and versatility on the offensive end.
