I think it was more of a gesture towards Rice who took a pay cut to get a better coaching staff (IE he didn't try to maximize his salary at the expense of the other coaches). So I think UNLV just bumped it enough to help cover that gap with the recruiting success they were getting I believe they wanted to make it substainable to have those assistant coaches salary and also imrpove rice's salary.

Alford was 24-9, finished 3rd in Conf, lost in first round NIT in year 1 at New Mexico with players he didn't recruit.
Rice was 26-9, finished 3rd in Conf, lost in first game(round 2) of NCAA in year 1 at UNLV with players he didn't recruit.
I think these are very comparable stats. I wouldn't have and won't judge either off of the first year. I like both Coaches results, although I'm sure we all wished for even better for our schools.
Seems UNLV's MO for new coaches is to sign them to a 3 year and secretly guarantee a 2 yr extension. Hauck got a 2 yr extension too. My only guess is the AD thinks they can't get more than a 3 yr initial congrats approved by the Regents.
The raises for both were pretty negligible too.
Eh, hopefully, that was Kruger's deal. Despite his "squeaky clean" image, Kruger's players sure had more than their fair share of run ins with the po po.
Just my opinion, obviously, but I really couldn't care less what UNLV pays Rice....Why does this matter at all?
I sure hope so & all coaches have to start their head coaching at some point so it should continue to get better. I'd say he did a pretty decent job in his first ever season as a head coach. I would have no problem seeing UNLV & UNM being major players every year not just in the west, but in the nation!
