I voted for the Mayor during the first round and in the run off. I wish he would have stayed out of the discussion. UNM has some tough decisions to make about which sports to cut just as the Mayor has tough decisions to make. I don't see Eddie Nunez giving Tim advice on the crime problem or Top Flight Golf.

Mayor’s support is no better than mine unless he is coughing up about $5M to erase Krebs’ mismanagement. But it is appreciated I’m sure.

I see no problem with him putting his thoughts out there just as many other people/fans have. Mayors are allowed to be sports fans.

But I would also expect that unless he can be part of the solution, his opinion should be worth no more than any other fan's support.

The one thing I could possibly accept is if he used mayoral leverage to talk with the Isotopes about supporting Lobo baseball, or our new pro soccer teams to support Lobo soccer, etc.

With this, and other voices/opinions, I still see part of the issue not being discussed enough: What is the purpose of university athletics?

Why should the mayor stay out of it? UNM sports are a big part of the community, more important to Albuquerque than the college sports in most other communities. I would be more concerned if the mayor didn't care at all about our main sports teams, even if the city doesn't have a financial stake.

OK. This is splitting hairs. Did we have a spending problem, or were we guilty of doing Rosie scenario numbers for revenue year after year. Was that necessary to get the budget passed? Was the AD encouraged to use the practice to get the budget approved??? We will probably never know the truth about how these numbers were chosen and accepted by the board but it would make an interesting story. What I am really beginning to dislike is the indecision. The sooner the cuts are made, the sooner we can move on and get the athletic department on a better plan for the future. I believe we have a plan for better accounting of the revenues and expenses going forward. We just need to decide which sports will continue to be funded. Perhaps next week we will move closer to getting the questions answered.
