    Rumors?

    First Post Banner
Had dinner with a Gonzaga alum last week. He indicated that he heard that the Zags passed on the Mountain West because the AAC is planing to open up a West Branch and bring in Gonzaga, BYU, SDSU and UNLV. Anybody heard rumors on this going on? Makes some sense to lessen travel for Wichita, SMU and Houston.

Needless to say, that would be devastating to the MWC. Thompson should have brought Wichita State in when he could have.

I heard a rumor I'm gonna quit my job if I hit Powerball this week. I think that is about as likely as the above.

Depending on how scheduling is set up, that would be a ridiculous spread. Logistically it could be a nightmare and eventually could be a financial burden on member schools.

So I guess it stands a chance....

    Sounds a bit silly.
My position as a moderator adds no validity to my opinions. I am a fan just like you and as such when I express a view it represents me and me alone and carries no more weight than any other fan other than the fact that I am always right. (Like everyone else.)

If it is 2 divisions with modest cross-division play until the tournament it may be viable.

I guess anything is possible. However, on the surface, that seems like an absolutely ridiculous move from a logistics standpoint. Oh yeah, there’s this little thing called football too.

Football is the key. Most teams don't have them.

Does it really matter? SDSU, UNLV if they leave better for us. Invite to the dance much easier. In 5-6 years they won't be missed. Much like BYU they have been gone 6-7 years and now who cares.

I doubt that. When SDSU and Boise tried to gut the MWC last time it was all about football.
That said if another round of conference expansion happens I do fear UNM could potentially be left out in the cold with out budget limitations and football being mostly down the last decade.

Sounds like a solid source to me, an alum heard it, so it has to be true right? Who did he hear it from, his uncle's cousin who is freinds with a AAC school alum? This rumor isn't worth the time it took to post it.

Conference RPI and national standing would drop and the uphill battle could easily become steeper. The stronger the MW the better for everyone.

I was thinking the same. If you only play 4 games against the other side, that’s two potential cross country road trips. And if it’s scheduled right those games could be back to back so only one trip is needed.

Lets assume this rumor is true. Seems like it strengthens Lobo cause to stay in MW for all sports other than FB if we decide no more FB. Especially coupled with our rising performance in the MW tourney which arguably contributed to the increases in attendance and viewership.

Current requirements for membership in the MWC is having a Football team. An exception would have to be made for Gonzaga. Doubt UNM would get an exception. If Gonzaga thinks the AAC is a better deal, God bless em, doubt SDSU or UNLV would be interested in joining them. Next rumor please.

AAC has far superior television than MWC, far more respect nationally than MWC, Also, the AAC does not have the short-sighted Craig Thompson as commisioner.

No idea if true or not, and not aligned with either. However since Vegas is growing out of control I am always interested in bits and as just a fan of sport I saw the rumor the the LV bowl here could potentially cut ties with the MWC.

Ha! Should have checked the FB side as this was reported already. The BB side always seems more active and I haven't visited since BB season. Best of luck!

This is good. Laughable, but good. Was never on the radar. Issues with the WCC that were addressed both publicly and behind closed doors are ultimately what lead to GU staying put. The option to move will always be on the table from here on out though. A future offer from the MWC or the AAC are viable options and have been discussed at length here on campus at GU.

Not true. You are one Mark Few away from being DePaul (Ray Meyer) or Utep (Don Haskins). Butler gave you the paradigm--cash in while you still can.
