Jordan Schultz reporting Indiana offering Alford $31 million for 7 years.
When asked directly about if he was offered, Alford wouldn't confirm/deny.

Would love to see the Bruin Nation reaction if this goes down. I always thought Alford would coach at IU one day. I thought he would leave the Lobos for that job. Ever considered he would leave a job like UCLA but they didn't really want him in the first place so they can't be that mad.
can we counter offer $7 million for 31 years???

UCLA fans are the most delusional fans in the world. NOTHING will make them happy except John Wooden rising from the dead and coaching again. Even then, since no school will ever have the easy path UCLA had to the finals year after year, even then they might turn on him. Alford should flee UCLA as soon as he can, and with three big likely losses this is probably his opportunity to sell high.
Having said that, it is a shame any serious rumors/facts come out while UCLA is still alive.
I personally would love to see him win a national championship this year, then bolt to Indiana
If Alford accepts and hires away Neal will he be messing with crappy?
I imagine the figure for this offer didn't just come out of nowhere. I'm assuming his people have been in touch with their people and this is what they've negotiated so far...
I coulda swore I saw a post earlier from our fearless leader Mark saying this wasn't true.
“My friends,” Dr. King said in his Detroit sermon, “all I’m trying to say is that if we are to go forward today, we’ve got to go back and rediscover some mighty precious values that we’ve left behind. That’s the only way that we would be able to make of our world a better world, and to make of this world what God wants it to be. . . .”
Please take Neal with you! Fingers crossed...
Since it would appear that Alford may already have the job and that enough time is passed that it may not be a distraction, I'll bet he wants to stick it to the Bruin fan base by winning the whole damn thing and then quitting the following day.
I think they have a real shot if they can get by Kentucky seeking payback.
I look at it that we missed out on 4 years of Alford ball. If he left for ucla. He sure as heck would have gone home to Indiana from unm.
Especially if if he leaves ucla for Indiana would reaffirm this.
Originally I was disappointed because Alford left a 10 year contract to head to ucla. But as it turns out, it would have been over after this year anyways.
Theres some solace in that realization to me.
I certainly have a lot of mixed emotions reading this article by Bryce - about Bryce.
"Let’s hear your best stuff. No, really. I mean it.
Have at it. I’ve heard it all by now anyway.
How are you not a walk-on?
And there’s a whole lot of other stuff you can’t print. . . . . . . . . . .
“Hey,” my dad asked, 'Are you excited to be playing off the ball, finally?' And that’s how I lost my job."

Wow.. excellent article. I love that kid.

"As of Saturday night, it would appear the Mountain West Conference has two NCAA tournament-worthy teams. As long as they can find the remains of one of them."
A bottom line is, why would Aldord stay in a dying conference:
Fan Base? Disillusion
Local Bar Support? Weak
Fan Base Knowledge? Declining
Local Support? Weak
CBS would rather have a weak Kansas State than a tough Boise State or Colorado State. Why do you think Dayton and Wichita State were matched up? To eliminate one non-BCS rather than two BCS.
In fact, since Billy Packer rampaged on behalf of CBS against qualified mid major teams in the Dance, it's been a greater intrusion of mediocrity.
UNM will continue to live in mediocrity unless it changes conferences, and the best chance is the AAC, which includes Cincinnati, UConn, SMU, Tulsa and soon, Wichita State. But our fans want Wyoming and Colorado State.
Stop whining about the program. We are in a dead conference. We have no real conference television. we have to do less with more. Craig Thompson is in the process of destroying the MWC and it seems many fans and Krebs are along for the ride.
Blame Neal all you want, but he is one of the least experienced coaches among the top programs:
Eric Musselman, maybe the top coach in the league other than:
Steve Fiasher, but maybe like Dave Rice at UNLV, too much over-rated talent: what does it say when you have five star players whose offers are pulled by the likes of Kansas and Kentucky.
Really good article. Some great insights.
Dave Rice was awful at running a program, but calling his players "overrated" is a stretch. Bust or not, Anthony Bennett was the top overall pick in the NBA. Zimmerman was drafted in the 2nd round. Vaughn went in the 1st. They had another kid who's name escapes me also drafted. The man could recruit. Couldn't do much else as a HC, but he could recruit. Neal is basically Dave Rice without the recruits.
