Watched a special on ESPN once that said when coach K started people hated him and wanted him out. Now look at where he's at. Not comparing coach k to Alford but winning is everything and I think Alford will be successful at UCLA, especially with top 50 recruits. He Will not be working with ESPN in three years.

Real talk, winning isn't enough there. Bruin fans have national championship expectations (realistic or not) every single year. From the day you walk into the building, you are compared to the greatest college basketball coach of all time. Ben Howland got fired after Final Four appearances in 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08 and a tourney appearance last season. Rat Lavin, got fired after an Elite 8 and 4 Sweet 16 appearances in 7 years. Steve has never had anywhere close to that level of success anywhere he has coached. Like I said, not rooting for it, but I'd be willing to bet beer that Alford is out in three years or less.

One thing that gives Alford a shot at that kind of success is that, and let's face it, he will be able to recruit better there, being in the midst of SoCal and all. That's why we didn't get "Z".

He got a little lucky on a longshot five star from Wisconsin this week, but has struck out on all the top local SoCal talent thus far.

As far as hitting stride in recruiting -- it's early.

We have an extremely small sample size at this point.

The new USC coach is doing much better recruiting locally in the same amount of time.

Arizona is the dominant school in recruiting the west coast at this point.

Lavin and Howland were also there in SoCal. So why did both of them split Westwood?

I don't have a problem with someone choosing UCLA over UNM. Any of us would probably take the money and the prestige of that program........But the sleazy way in which Alford did it still makes me mad, and for that, I look forward to every one of his losses at UCLA. As many have said, he made his own bed, I hope he sleeps well. I hope he regrets messing with happy.

Has anyone thought about how Alford's good fortune after UNM is good for UNM? The more he wins, the better it is for the Lobos, except when we need to kick his butt in head on contests.

Alford was almost fired last year. Ball and Leaf have saved him for now. He's right back on a major hot seat if he does not make the Final Four this year. That's a lot of pressure and anything can happen in the big dance.

SA is the best coach UNM has ever had period. He made the best decision for himself and his family by going to LA. I'm rooting for him to succeed and he has UCLA off to a great start this season

So wait. You went and found a thread from 2013 when Alford had a hit list out on him. Things and fans around the nation where imploding on him. National sports talking heads were all over him. New Mexico was at a point in 2013 where it looks like everything was pointed in the right direction coming off the NCAA appearance and you question this? I'm not sure what's more pathetic. Trying to discredit and insult me or the fact that you dismiss that this is completely relevant at that moment time.

If you don't think culture is the biggest thing coaches preach, you just don't know. Sorry. Yes. Coach Alford was the biggest preacher of culture. Jamie Dixon, huge preacher of culture. You go back and look at any coach and you'll find the word culture. I forget who told me on Twitter about 6-12 months ago that culture is the biggest thing in college basketball.

Hilarious! Please don't credit me for finding this thread as Pitwolf did that work, I'm much too lazy for that! I just found it hilarious like looking at my 8th grade class pictures to see what was considered cool in 1979. Certainly reposting a thread supporting Neal should not be taken as an insult especially if you think Neal is a good Coach! Maybe by 2020 the prediction will come true! We can only hope.

    Building a culture for success

I had some time this week to think about our teams, past and present, and what I came to realize is every year our kids play hard and we have a good culture. But as I sat down and thought, I wanted to know what it is that makes our culture different. What have we created over the years, not just here, but at UMass and Memphis?
When we talk about building a culture for success, this is what we’re talking about:

"Nobody is more prepared to be a head coach more than Craig Neal,'' said Alford. "He knows the culture. He gives UNM the best chance to continue what we've done.''

    You can’t assume culture.

At the core of culture there often lies a strong emotional connection to the cause. However, you can’t assume that that connection exists. Instead, you need to build it and continue to renew it. Coach K likens this to “renewing your vows.”
