    kenny thomas...

is giving three $6000.00 scholarships to students at an albuquerque high school...kudos to him!
'...the Pit is just God awful uncomfortable for a visiting team.'

...he yells, "No one comes to the hoop now, Melvin. No one!", Harv Schmidt to Mel Daniels

“They’re loud and they get on you. They know everything about you. They know your mom’s name.”, jimmer fredette.

...Bobby Knight was screaming at his starters for being late. "We're getting our #!&$@$ kicked! Because you were late!".

Yeah Kuddos to him... but I just spent two days at an inservice with teachers from Albuquerque High and from talking to them you would think there were no good students there what so ever... I know thats not the case, and sorry for the rant but it was really frustrating sitting and listening to each and every one of those professional educators make excuses for the achievement of their kids.

    Sorry to get off topic

My wife is a science teacher at Albuquerque High School. There certainly is a very challenging aspect to the job. Lots of students are 1st generation Mexican immigrants and the education values are not always consistent with middle class American values. She believes that this is a primary challenge or root cause for a large portion of the kids not performing at high levels - the expectations are not set at home. By the way, she really enjoys teaching these kids.

Having said that, she is also very proud of the accomplishments of another group of kids who do come from the more middle class Nob Hill area. This group includes blacks, hispanics, whites, and they all have one thing in common - middle class values. Their parents are very involved and set high expectations for their kids. And that group of kids is why Albuquerque High typically has the 2nd highest number of Merit Scholar winners in the state of New Mexico, second only to Los Alamos High school.

Not trying to knock what you said Cubs23. I believe every thing you've said. Just wanted to point out that there is another group of teachers at Albuquerque High - those that are aware of how many great students they have at their school.

I think this is great news. I was under the impression that KT didn't have much to do with Abq. anymore. It is cool that he is still showing some love.

Kenny also spoke to the students at Highland HS. It was on KOB TV early news last night and I just caught the end of it so I don't know if he also gave any scholarships to Highland.

Sorry to lump everyone together Roob, I was just so frustrated after listening to those teachers that I had to say something. I know there are great teachers everywhere, and it takes a special teacher to teach and want to make a difference in those areas, as opposed to the guys I was talking about who wanted to be friends with their students and collect a check. Believe me I taught in the South Valley for a long time and it takes a lot of dedication to do it right!

He's still got some family around here so I know he does come to town from time to time. My wife taught him a pilates session once!

No problem cubs23. My wife comes home and tells me the horror stories about some of the teachers and administrators. She sees some of the stuff you talk about too.

I taught in the South Valley around 1987 and the kids there were great and their parents were second to none. However, they were not as involved in school due to the fact that many worked swing or had jobs that did not afford them the luxury of being too involved. Having said that, I came to Reno to work at the poorest school in the district and here I encountered the same thing as I did in the South Valley many years earlier. Also, the culture among the non minority teachers here in Reno was appalling, which sounded very much like what was mentioned earlier (not that all non minority teachers teaching at a predominantly minority school felt the same way). To them is why bother, they're gonna end up in gangs, or prison, etc....yet, once again the kids were great. The point: Talk like that happens in many places. If this didn't make sense, pm me or read it again.

Gotcha Reno and thats a real shame because i agree with you the kids in the SV were great, even the bad ones, it was just all the outside stuff that got in the way that made it hard... By the time I was there in 2000 the parents were not much help... more of a hinderance.
