My First Lobo Lair Bracket - Feb. 19th

    First Post Banner
    Hi all,

Since the brackets this time of year are always a big topic of conversation, I was thinking I might try to do a Lobo Lair bracket twice a week. However, in order to best represent the Lobo Lair, I want you guys to give me honest (and constructive, of course) input as to what your gripes are with my bracket, and depending on how games go, I will update this bracket.

My goal is for this to be as good a reflection of our members here as I can make it, and in order to do that, I need your help! So if someone makes a case for a team moving up or down and you agree with it, give them a "Thanks" or quote and reply "Agreed" so I can gauge the feelings of the masses.

Anyway, here's my first shot. Sorry if the font seems a bit small. Let me know what you all think!

Hmm, MWC with 4 teams and UNM as a 2 seed, what's not to like?

ok, ok, if this is our "fantasy bracket" since it's a Lair bracket, let's stack our bracket with any team that does NOT present a match-up issue.

Give me your #7 Northern Iowa and #10 Cornell as a potential 2nd round match-up.

West Virginia and Pitt would also be a difficult Sweet 16 match-up. (some thinking WV can get to the final four and they might)

Give me your #3 Ohio State (would love to see us shut down Turner and the national pundits!)

and give me your #6 Maryland

Ok, since we've now paved our path to an elite 8, let me know have Purdue as the #1 seed and the team we beat to get to the final four.

Man, I love these fantasy brackets... :Afun):Afun)

It's funny, but isn't this what the bigs wigs do to progress their own teams as far as possible?
This year has been a blast to follow.

Here's a nit pick. West Virginia and Pitt are both Big East teams, you have them potentially playing in the 2nd round. That can't happen. Teams from the same conference can't play meet until a regional Final. Of course I think Siena will beat Pitt and it won't matter.

Same thing, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest meeting in the 2nd round, can't happen either.

Thats why these things are so hard to do, you have a bunch of things you have to factor in.

Props for putting the Lobos as a 2. If we could win out, it could be a possibility.

    I don't think Cincinnati belongs.

I like you having Utep as an 8, that is one team I don't want the Lobos to play in the 1st round.

Thanks for the input, txlobo! I tried to do what the committee will do the best I could, meaning following the S-Curve and putting the Top 3 seeds from each conference in different brackets. I think giving us Purdue means we'd be #5 in the S-Curve, which I'm not sure is realistic at this point. :-)

But your other moves seem doable! Thanks again.

Ooh good catch. I missed that first one. I think I may have to move Temple to UNM's 6 seed and Northern Iowa to UNM's 7 seed to accommodate.

Ga Tech and Wake Forest would actually meet in the Sweet 16, so technically that's allowed, but I see your point.

Who would you put in place of Cincinnati? That was a tough call for me.

Charlotte maybe. Those last few teams are tough. I'll rescind my Cincinnati comment, because I can't think of anybody better.

We'll just have to see what happens this week; there may be some movement in-out. I considered Charlotte, but they're fading at the moment. Louisville was just too horrible early for me to let them in, though they might be the other team worth considering for that slot. Cincinnati is solid, just pretty wishy-washy, beating good teams and losing to bad teams. It's kind of hard this year, because it's less about who's deserving and more about "who stinks less".

We're gonna need your final bracket before Selection Sunday to compare to Lunardi, et al. to see if you are the "Real Bracketologist"! :Afun)

You bet! I'll try to get it up Sunday afternoon pre-selection show so you can compare. But remember, this isn't my bracket. This should be our bracket. Your input is needed and appreciated!

If Kansas is a number 1 seed they are in the St. Louis Regional.

If New Mexico ends up as a 2 seed, then they end up in the Salt Lake Region or the Houston Regional.

So KU and UNM as a 1-2 seed in the same regional, not likely.

Good point. I tried for the most part to leave location out of it, since where each section is played is pure speculation at this point. I went at it purely from a numbers and "No Top 3 together" standpoint, but your point is a valid one and would likely come true in the event of such a bracket.

Just a note for all readers: my goal is to update this every Monday or Tuesday and every Friday, so I get the majority of big games under each bracket posting. I'll even do my best to compare to previous brackets and list out which teams had movement and how it went. If there's anything else you'd like to see (First Four Out, etc.) let me know.

With UNLV's 2nd loss to Utah no way are they an 8. Assuming they win out and sweep the tournament - but that's expected of them - they may get as high as 9, but I think a 10 is the best. Lose early in the tournament and they're NIT bound. Win out and lose in the semis - maybe 11, but maybe "first four out."

Thanks for the input, judas! You seem to have a pretty good reputation on this board, so I take your words at face value.

UNLV was a tough one for me. I think you're probably right in saying they should be a 9 or a 10. As a matter of fact, I went in and re-adjusted on my site after the initial input, and I moved them down to a 9 in a different bracket, to accommodate the Georgia Tech/Wake Forest comment.

Thanks for the reminder RPS! That's why I left dates and locations out of the equation. I'll probably continue to do so just so it doesn't get even more complicated than it already is. Phew! I never realized how tough these things are to compile!
