I think we will see situations with T and Stump running the rock. They are more apt to pulling the ball down and taking off (and deadly doing it). Congrats to BR though, he really shined from the scrimmage statistics over on gl.com

It's not a matter of if Austin will be the starter, but when. I say the 2011 opener at the latest, but possibly this year. Would be nice to get him some seasoning early on this year.

Don't give up on Stump just yet. He'll push for a starting bid in the future, too. He's truly a dual threat.

And congratulations to BR. Nice job in stepping up your game to a new level!! All your hard work is paying off.

I see a rotation, too much athleticism , running vs gunning, 3 good ones, a red shirt one 1 of these guys,,,,is tough. Wish our O line was on par with our D line.

See Lock's using every trick/play to gain an advantage for some big plays.

I was in Ruidoso this weekend and Stump was much more impressive than Austin. He moved the chains faster and better than Austin, his major problem was ball handling on snaps. He also had problems overthrowing the WR. However, can he turn around a broken play. He reminded me of Stoney Case. I don't understand how he can be dismissed as a option, have you seen them live Lobomike?

He was named starter for the OREGON game. Things could change from week to week. I wonder if Grinder stays now or transfers??

On sat, at least, Gruner looked more like a asst. coach than a player. After every QB group left the field he would huddle with the offense and work with them. IMO he looked happy and very involved. In addition I think people maybe surprised by the o-line, I was, the coach was working them hard.

    My unofficial report,,

Godfrey, Miller, Smith, Ball, all redshirts.. I;m hearing Barr and Austin only two freshman not reshirted at this point...

    I welcome any additional information

One thing is for sure, Locks was set on Donovan as his QB last year. The gap between the QB1 and QB2 will be apparent upon how quick the decision to go with QB2 if QB1 becomes an issue (hopefully not).

Hopefully not is right! We want the best 11 on the field both sides of the ball. I"m still scratching my head, but; BR has a leg up on the others with his knowledge of the plays. I will say this.. Stats don't lie, whether or not that translates to the next level is the bigger question. I think that's where coaching takes over. I felt all along one of the Frosh QB's would redshirt..you're either a playmaker or your're not. Can you handle the pressure,,

I;m proud of Holbrook for staying with it when he could have given up. He didn't. The year of Holbrook? Hope so..

I haven't been to a practice, but by all accounts, Austin has the better arm/throwing motion and he is number two right now. I understand that Godfrey is a great runner, but I have doubts that a 5-11 QB can be an effective passer at this level and you need to be able to throw the ball to succeed. That said, Godfrey is obviously a great athlete who can and will have a role in the future. I just feel that, right now, Austin has the leg up at QB and the depth chart would bear that out.

I would really hope that the "odd man out" redshirts too, primarily to even out the classes at QB.

    Next year
    BR would be a JR
Tarean (if he gets the backup job) SO
Stump would be a RS FR

Smith redshirts?????? As in Calvin Smith, our #1 recruit out of Miami?? The guy who announced his decision on ESPN live? That's crazy.

I could see Godfrey if he's the #3 QB. Better to save his eligibility than to play him sparingly.

Miller. Miller is a WR who is trying to transition to TE. That's a tough transition to make in your first college season. He probably needs to beef up in size so he can be an effective run blocker. TE's can be playmakers, but they also need to be big and strong enough to do the dirty work on the line - just a guess.

I'll try to get out there tomorrow or Thursday to see things for myself. RPS, are you with me?

I don't know about last season, but it's not normally done running the spread. tight end is another receiver..

Thats what I was thinking as well. Locks said they would like to run the ball more this year. Do you think that will include a spread formation, or more of a power, big formation? I am sure certain situations will call for certain measures. Call me crazy but I am optimistic and excited about this year. VERY VERY tough start to the schedule. Why the hell not pull one out...

    Lucas Reed's BIO:
2009 (REDSHIRT FRESHMAN): Capped his fine debut season by earning third team All-Freshman honors from CollegeFootballNews.com - the first Lobo TE to earn freshman All-America recognition...started 8 times in his first 12 collegiate games...17 catches (212 yards, long of 29, TD) were the most by a Lobo tight end since 2006 (John Mulchrone - 20)...

What a difference a year makes. Lucas redshirts his 1st season and then emerges as the 3rd best freshman TE iin the country in his second season. Redshirting can be beneficial in many ways.

If the depth is there, redshirt. I know its crazy to think about Calvin Smith on a redshirt, but with Ugo, big Pete, Kennedy coming on strong, Ellis, Jaymar, Rainey, Carr, Hunter, McBain, Greer etc...etc....D-line is crazy deep. Locks press conf just got uploaded to gl.com and he says Calvin will play situational roles this year, he just needs to get stronger. Siciliano and Aho can be serviceable backups to Lucas, however if Lucas stays healthy all year, Miller might be stuck with a wasted year. Locks will yank that redshirt if needed, look at Carrier. I think there is more depth all around this year, especially in the skill positions. Secondary is still worrysome. Sounds like Mills and E-mac are battling for the spot opposite of Hooks. Next week shoud be fun.

I'm so sorry I just thought that people might like to know what I actually observed on the field. Apparently seeing all three play for almost two hours, with the defense attacking, did not qualify me to have an opinion. I guess that your opinions and Lmikes are the only valid ones. I did not purport to be a coach I just think it is stupid to right off a talented player who you have never seen or to denigrate him based upon hearsay.
I would say that overall the team was heads and shoulders above the team that I saw at the cherry silver game, but you probably wouldn't believe me.
