It's not super fast. I got it for portability not performance. It weighs about 3.2 lbs. and advertises up to 9.5 hours of battery life. I don't think I'll be able to get that much. Depending how I use it I'll probably get anywhere from 6-8.5 hours.

You got a netbook with an atom processor - yes, that's the smaller footprint that runs forever and is highly portable because of small size. I got my daughter one of these for Christmas. She can fit it in her purse. Nice net appliance.

Less powerful and much smaller (means much lower cost) processor that Intel sells. It won't do all the intense calculations and other high power stuff needed, but it can certainly take care of your surfing needs and simple tasks such as editing/creating word files, etc.. By using much smaller processor, which can handle the basic tasks ot getting on the net and sending/receiving messages, Intel can offer a much smaller chip. This translates into big cost savings in manufacturing which then get passed on to the consumer. The Atom chip is a complementary offering from Intel. It's intended to be used in net appliances (low end computing needs) whereas their regular multi-core processor is intended for regular PC's and servers (middle to high end computing needs).

Chip cost economics 101:
It costs X amount to manufacture a wafer. The chip is rectangular/square shaped in appearance. With the latest and greatest Multi-core processsor chips, they may be able to fit something like 200 chips on that 12 inch diameter wafer. The smaller Atom chip occupies less space, so maybe they can fit 800 chips out of that wafer. So the cost per chip for the Atom is 1/4th the cost of the big multicore processor. Atom chip is intended for internet appliances such as the netbook. The netbook, btw, does not have a DVD player. That's another way they can make that appliance smaller.
