Steve Alford told the Journal that his son Kory will join the Lobos as a walk-on next

    First Post Banner
season. Kory is a senior this year at La Cueva. "It's really exciting, and it means a lot to me that he's chosen to do this" Alford said. Coach Alford continued, "I played for my dad, and it's a special feeling . I'm just glad he thinks enough of me to want to do it."

Wonder if he is joining dad as a way to start being groomed for a coaching career, post college career? Anyone know if that's where his interest is?

Nice addition to the squad next year!

Coach Alford actually mentioned this to us on Dominique's home visit. I was not sure when he was going to officially announce it. He had offers from Northern Arizona and schools in the Midwest and back East, not sure which ones. He is mainly doing it to play for his dad and start a career path as a coach. It also gives the Lobos a shooter without having to burn a scholarship.

Awesome, and even though he deserves a scholarship there is really no reason to give him one. I believe that he gets free tuition because his father is an employee of the university. An athletic scholarship is worth more, but considering the situation, Im sure he would be fine walking on.

I'm sure that if he were not Alford's son that Alford would give him every opportunity to earn a scholarship. But in this case I am sure that Alford will willingly pay his full tuition out of pocket (pretty much pocket change at UNM compared to what Alford makes anyway) and be able to use that scholarship for an additional player.

A good way to get an extra player without burning a scholarship......and having grown up learning to shoot from his dad he very well may end up being a big weapon for us.

Kory! Thanks for wanting to be a LOBO. He will be a sharp shooter for us. He can shoot the rock from 3pt line. This is a huge addition to the program.

    Welcome Kory Alford.

I think coach-son player relationship can be tricky, but since the elder Alford went through it before, I'll bet that gives him special insights to help smooth things out. Kory's going to get the tougher end of having to deal with the psychological dynamics of the situation, but that's just natural being 18 and entering adulthood. Just a great coaching family we have with the basketball program, and I'll bet old granddad helps out behind the scenes, too.

We are very fortunate. I can't believe how fortunate we are in roundball.

Got a feeling Kory will be getting a deserved ride before too long, a great player. Very awesome to have another Alford in the PIT.

Rivals has him as a solid 3 star.

    WELCOME KORY!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel somewhat vindicated when I suggested that if he chose UNM, he would walk-on. Sometimes it doesn't matter if a kid deserves a scholly in a situation like this. Their might have been a tough decision had he been offered by Stanford or other $40k+ schools, but the simple fact that he wants to get into coaching probably made it very simple.

No doubt as others have mentioned, his Dad will work him equal or harder than others on the team and Kory knows this. The next 4 years will be the best and hardest of his young life. It will really get interesting when the Kory's brother and Neal's son make their decision. We literally might face the real possibility of having too much talent. Some say that's impossible, but we could have 3 walk-ons that are legit DI scholly players before long. I know that's the cart before the horse by a couple years, but holy mackeral...we are blessed.

Nothing but great success for UNM, Alford, his family and our family.

I think this is awesome and look forward to seeing Kory in the Pit.

Isn't Coaches younger son a highly rated baller? I remember reading about him and Noodle son. I wonder what the chances of getting all three to UNM are?

Afterall, Kory could do pretty well considering that he has got the highly prized Alford DNA. Steve and his dad have been both been top notch coaches. Therefore, I wouldn't bet against Kory one day being a great head coach.

Not sure if or how much PT he might get, especially early on, however, if he is 6'4" and a top notch outside shooter, it should give our defense some fits in practice which will help them all.

I doubt we ever see a Wallace type 7 3's in one game against us again any time soon, because we'll be seeing it in practice all the time thanks to Kory.

My initial hunch on Cullen Neal is that he is too good of a player just to be a walk on for UNM. If he stays here I would imagine he would get a scholly ( yes i know it makes sense for Neal to just pay his tuition and save a scholly but its seems to be more prestigious to get the full ride) but then again I didnt think Kory would do the same either. Cullen seems to be a bit more of a raw talent and will be getting some interest from some decent schools. Cullen is currently rated as the 25th best SG in the nation for 2013 according to ESPN and I would assume that will go up.

Alford and Neil seem strongly to be about Team and less about individual ego, so my guess is their kids will be the same and worry about what's best for the Team how they perform best for the Team and not fret in the least about the appearance of having a scholarship for the ego. (plus it takes off a bit of the unique pressure of being the coach's kid if they are not viewed as taking away a spot or one from a needier player)
