Never ever let the Rebel fans claim the Thomas & Mack is louder than the Pit

Just got back from Vegas, hell of a game to watch in person! The fans at the game were suorisely well mannered towards us, no sh*t talking all game, even at CSU we get some heckling so I figured we hear a lot of smack at this game but alas nothing. Crowd was decent, but were quiet almost the entire game, except get this Lobo fans, they have a fricken hype man that gets on the PA and tells them to make noise, and noise causes stops on defense, it was pretty funny to see them actually have to tell their fans it was a good time to make noise. Whats even better, they would stand when he told them do and by the time the game restarted they would be back on their butts, funny stuff. Anyway, it was cool seeing a regular season game there instead of just MWC Tourney games, they have a decent intro but nothing special and the damn smoke from the fireworks fills the arena the whole first half. All in all a pretty good time in Vegas!

BTW one thing I wanted to point out (i dont know if you saw this on tv), Jamal rushed off the bench to pick up Kendall off the floor, he wasnt gonna let him sit out there by himself. It was a class act by Jamal and shortly after Snell and Gary arrived, but I thought it was great leadershp by Fenton to say scrw wthe handshake line, let me get our boy off the floor... KW was visibly upset (crying) after shaking hands with everyone, but I think he will learn from this and it wont happen again....

In our defense the pa guy is an idiot but also the T&M wasn't sold out. When it is sold out it gets the level of the pit if not exceeds it just depends though either way it was an exciting ending.

Yea it was lame yesterday in the T&M. I mentioned to the people next to us that it was dead in the place compared to last season. Last years game was pretty crazy. I remember when UNLV came back late and that PA guy came out during the last TV timeout and got the crowd wild. Then Philly drained a 3 from the corner to silence them for good. The place has more of a NBA style feel to it than a NCAA game. People are constantly up and down and they seem to treat it more as a social than a college basketball game.

I agree its funny that they need a que from a PA announcer when to cheer. Lobo fans just know what to do.

Both are great places to watch a game but the Pit for pure noise is louder. I have to admit that "Rebels" chant can be taxing. The only time the Thomas and Mac sells out is when the Lobos are there or when the Lobo fans take over the T&M

I saw it on TV, BTM. I made the same comment on one of the threads. Big props to Jamal. His stock just went up even higher in my book. Classy act by the young man.

You have to look at it from our shoes. We just came off of a home loss to Colorado State. That loss didn't sit well with anyone. We also already lost to SDSU and BYU. Our team looked like true contenders in the beginning of the year. We have played poorly since December 1st.

Your team hasn't done anything in conference as well. You guys may finish in the bottom half. Our team has been looking like a NIT team. The people that showed up to the game weren't into it because of these reasons stated. Call it whatever you want, but if you were at the game last year, you would have experienced an entirely different atmosphere. I respect the pit for all it is, but you can't judge the T&M based on yesterday's game.

Why was it not sold out? This is UNLV and New Mexico! I guess the difference is we're ALWAYS loud, partially because we ALWAYS show up.

Woe is me! We're only 3-3 in conference. Oh, woe is me!!! I'm a poor wittle webel fan! We lost to Colorado State! FIRE KRUGER, FIRE KRUGER, FIRE KRUGER!!! Stop supporting the team, cuz they suck!!! Don't go see a great basketball game against a longtime rival because you're spoiled as hell!!!

UNM is 1-4. I cherish every moment I have in the pit because it is a special place, that has seen many a special team. Do I worry about my team? Certainly. Do I give up on my team? NEVER!!!

This is why the T&M will never compare to THE PIT!

Lol. You act like I gave up on MY team. I was there cheering on like I always do. I was just telling it like it is for the majority of our fanbase. For the last month and a half, most of our fans have been extremely disappointed in our team . We don't accept losing to Colorado State at home. I'm guessing you guys wouldn't either, because if you did, then you would be at 0-5 right now. Thank goodness you are not, because you have a very talented team. They just need to come together. They're close

WOW!!! Ellenberger and Tark built the rivalry. I know that, even though it was before I was born, because I'm a LOBO FAN!

Maybe the reason you guys aren't ever happy is because you're so damn arrogant?!

BTW, we weren't ever in the same conference, really, until the MWC was built. But we started playing home-and-homes yearly in the 70's because Tark and Stormin' Norman were really good friends. Some great games. I never could see them, unfortunately, but I've read and heard about them.

Yes, this is a longtime rivalry. Especially considering conference alignment, and that our 2 oldest conference rivals are leaving. UNM-UNLV is a PREMIER conference matchup, that started as a premier OOC matchup.

I give the T&M respect. It gets loud when they want. However, the PIT has it's rep for a reason. It's insane. None of the Rebs know because they aren't at the "PIT" games, like SDSU etc. I've been their for the famous 3OT game like 6 years ago and MWCT time. It's a great atmosphere but the PIT is just on a different level and one of the only true "college atmospheres" left.
Doesn't mean the T&M is bad, just not comparable.

Haha. You got me. I guess it's a rivalry to you. UNM just seems like another team in conference. Granted, it is a competitive matchup. It has gotten more intense since Alford arrived, but it isn't quite on the level of BYU or SDSU. I never really heard of our "rivalry" being that big (even in the 70s). Since you are a LOBO FAN, what is the all time series record at?

I agree with you. I've never been to the PIT. I was just pointing out that judgement on our atmosphere should not be based on yesterday's game. I believe the PIT is an exceptional college arena.

Ahh I see. I also just found an article on the LVSUN that was written by Tark. He talks about the rivalry from back in the day. He mentions how you guys snapped our 76-game home winning streak. I would link it, but I know this is frowned upon haha

I think it was 95 or 96 when Tark signed with Fresno st, after the "cheating" debacle. (do you guys call it "rebelgate?" lol) I got to see the regular season WAC game vs. Tarks bulldogs, but missed the 3 OT conference semifinal. It was blacked out in Albuquerque, but I got a VHS tape from the Fresno broadcast... think I still have it somewhere. Great game.

Even then, 20 years later, UNM fans still loved ridiculing the "towell biter."

I've been the last 2 years to watch the Lobos and Rebels. Didn't go this season. But I really love the T&M and it's atmosphere big time. I also have been to SDSU and love their students. Each is unique as the Pit is. The Pit is known for it's noise. The T&M is known for it's fan participation and some noise and of course their pep band and the dancing girls. Viejas is known for the creativity of the students. All 3 have great great atmospheres.

Even though you threw a nice dig at us I'll answer it for you. Both UNLV and UNM are not ranked, UNLV when ranked pull in crowds of 15k+ unranked were around 12k. Add into town some people only show up for ranked opponents and it's really an uphill battle. Add to it that Vegas isn't a traditional town and has alot of entertainment options during the day/night that UNLV has to compete against. Also unlike most places in the word Vegas is 24/7 meaning that you have some people working.

In all the Pit is a unique monster in itself and no one can question UNM fanbase and support for there team. But not all fanbases are the same.

Entirely right on your assessment however if we got closer to Tark level's I think it'd be interesting to see which venue is louder. :D

In 1965 construction of University Arena began. It was originally a secret development between UNM's President, the contractors, and Bob King. UNM wanted a 15k capacity arena on a $1 million budget. Impossible!

So, they built a roof, and dug a hole. Why? Because it was cheap. The bowl is in the ground. You're standing on concrete on top of hard dirt. The foundation for the building is New Mexico. Stuff a rabid basketball fanbase in an underground "pit" where the seats are "too close together" and there is no basketball arena in the world that will get as loud. Period.

I've never been to the Mack, but I do respect it and I know it gets very loud. I also know UNLV fans tend to be rather fickle. So, my understanding, which I think most would agree on, is that at capacity The Pit will always win if for no other reason than the fact that our support for our program is unwavering, and we stand right on top of opposing teams. Our noise is trapped in a little hole.

We're also a bunch of crazy @$$ New Mexicans! lol

At T&M, If you spend the extra $$'s and sit in the lower bowl, then it is certainly a great place to watch a game. But if you save $$'s and sit in the upper bowl, it is horrific for watching the game. I moved around a lot and there are all kind of obstructions from the upper bowl. I would guess the bottom bowl seats 10k and the upper bowl 8k. So I feel bad for fans that have to experience a game from the upper bowl all season long.
