I like it. Now we as fans need to pack the PIT for every game and support them. If we stay healthy I think we can make a run at another 30 win season.

Not that it means a whole lot yet, but it is nice to see some positive national pub! Personally, I would probably rather them fly under the radar the first couple weeks of the season, then crack the top 20, but that's just me.

It's great for recruiting to be ranked early going into the summer recruiting season. Alford & Co. could use some extra ammo while on the hunt for the big stars they've got lined up. 2011-2012 basketball season is going to be awesome, I can just feel it. The 2012 recruiting class is very very important for the goals that both coaches and fans have set for the future.

Soon enough we will start getting recognition from all the outlets and that will leave the door wide open for us to start the season strong and bust into the top 10. I agree with all the posters on this thread...2011-2012 looks to be a special season, I see the potential for a 30 win season, and it doesn't mean much but it's awesome to get the pub.

Nice, a topic worth discussion! I agree with Bo, it is important to get the recognition for recruiting. We want to be a destination site for the top players in the country, and being in the top 25, 20, 10 is really where we want to be. Now the guys have to back it up with hard work and effort on the court. I am looking forward to this next season!
Go Lobos! Go Erskine & Shump! Go Lucas! Go Cam!

Betcha' Ben Howland will be kicking himself this year after letting the best talent in California go to UNM rather than UCLA.

Always nice to get some recognition.

Now if they could only realize there is no "Coast" in New Mexico.

"sophomore Kendall Williams should be one of the best guards on the West Coast."

Perhaps the writer meant to say, Sorry Coach Howland, Kendall Williams WOULD have been one of the best guards on the West Coast. Now he's slightly inland.

Very cool. I think this puts a team like UNM in a perfect position. They get some buzz breaking the top 25, but they can then fly somewhat under the radar and turn a lot of heads and get noticed if they win a lot of games. BYU was #24 in the May 12, 2010 preseason rankings, and for me it was great to see them exceed expectations. UNLV was #17, but they unraveled and did not live up to the hype. The biggest disappointment was Kansas State, which Rivals had at #5!! UNM has the potential to have a season like BYU and SDSU had last year.

About F'n time!! I hate when fans say they would rather fly under the radar or that polls dont mean much. We need to be the team that people look forward to playing in their schedule. Being in the polls means a lot to future recruits so it does mean a lot as mentioned earlier by BO. Lets be the target everyone is aiming for and start becoming the new basketball powerhouse in the west.

At Lobo Talk one time many years ago, one of our guards was asked about a trip to Canada and how it went. He said something like "It was really cool, I had never been overseas before!" Maybe we are closer to the coast than even we realize! ;-)

I think it's actually good ... great for perception of being part of the elite in the west. Good for recruiting west coast kids -- not too far from CA. If you want to appear close to Texas for Texas kids, we play up the border; if we want to be perceived as nearly on the west coast, we can do that too!

Couldn't agree more. There isn't any time that I would rather my team be unranked. The more that recruits and potential recruits can see UNM in the top 25 the better. Flying under the radar doesn't do anything for the program IMO.

West coast? Ok. Let's look at it this way. A lot of people consider Ohio part of the "midwest." If that's the case, then we are most certainly on the west coast... lol He shoulda just said "in the west," and left out the "coast." But it's still good exposure for Kendall.

It reminds me of a vacation trip I took to those tropical Hawaiian islands. I hated it when I had to return home to the US.

CUBS23 was more of a Top 10, all 5 starters on the All-MWC team, 2 All America's, 30+ wins kind of a guy. Top 25 was modest compared to his predictions.

The fact that they are talking about UNM is a big win. That is the key, recognition.
Also, being part of a ranked team is going to motivate the current roster and the incoming players even more.

UCLA let a lot of talent get out of Cali as of late. They seem to be doing a lot better with the 2012 targets. There's a belief in recruiting circles that it will take a lot to repair those relationships that they have burned.

Im used to it already. I live in Arizona now and grew up in Albuquerque. I just consider everything west of the Mississippi the "West Coast". A Huge chunk of the US population lives on the Coast so thats pretty much what they mean. Anything west of Mississippi is West Coast. LOL!

I'am not surprised. Lobos will be good for the next few years as long as the type of recruiting continues and coach Alford stays. Next year's talent will be super and it will be hard to put everybody in the game. Coach Alford and his staff have done a wonderfull job. Keep up the great work and GO LOBOS

Hey just look at what they, the networks, always talk about, "East coast bias", well as Yakka is talking about , we are part of the new "West coast" soon to be the West coast bias, where basketball bias will start to counterbalance that other side crap!!! "The West shall rise again", it's time for the NCAA Championship to return to The West Coast.
As I always said, buy New Mexico western desert, after the big one it'll be prime beach front!! They don't call LA "shaky town" for no reason, Arizona and New Mexico the new West coast!

The original point and click interface was a Smith & Wesson.
