Class of 2012 -- Obij Aget - Nick Banyard

In less than 7 days UNM picked up two big recruits for the 2012 class.
Looking ahead for a second I think we (Lobo fans) have to be extremely excited about the future course of this team. I see a lot of misconceptions about players that I think its only fair to clear some things up. No need to give unfair expectations.
Ive spoken with an talent evaluator and both of them have told me the same thing about both players.

    Obij Aget-
Obij has the potential to be a major defensive stopper in the country. Not just the MWC. I think its also a fair statement to say that his offense is a ways off. Lobo fans should expect a player who comes to UNM with a knack for blocking shots and protecting the bucket. Somewhat of a garbage man right now and should see most of his points off putbacks and tip dunks. His offense is limited but he still has another year to work on that at La Lumarie. This is the kid who played his best game of his career against the #2 player in the country Andre Drummond. There is some serious upside here!!

    Nick Banyard-
First described to me as a "poor mans Danny Granger". Thats a huge compliment. I think Danny is still fresh in everyones mind. He has both a mid-range and outside game. He also has post moves. The thing that sets Nick apart is hes really skilled. Maybe not "elite" athletic ability but more than good to excel at any level. He might be one of the more skilled freshman to enter UNM in a long time. A definite late bloomer who not many knew about before the summer because he was somewhat overshadowed by Marcus Smart and the other PG. This is a very exciting signing on many levels and the fact that he can play a few different positions is what this staff has targeted!

It will be really fun to see how these guys expand their games over the next year. The players who improve the most and quickest will certainly have a shot at playing time.

Is Banyard more like a Matt Howard from Butler's team last year?

I'm really excited about the potential these guys have also, but Granger was an NBA All Star and Kendall Williams was the MWC Frosh of the year not to mention, we seem to have a couple of highly skilled frosh this year.

You're right though, let's not heap undue expectations on them to early and give them a chance to develop...

big thumbs up for these 2 verbals!!!

Granger was a late bloomer, too. Probably ranked about #400 in his class. He kept improving, though. Who knows how much Banyard will continue to improve.

Someone on here said that Banyard reminds them of Clayton Shields. After seeing him in a few of those games that were posted I can see why. He can shoot but also has that big frame to play down low. Looks like he definitely has some big time upside to him. Would like to see him Post Up a lil more so from what I seen but Im sure that will come.

I like Aget's athleticism for being a 7footer. He seems like he knows where to be in the lil bit I seen of him. Hopefully he can develop some of those Hakeem Olajuwon type of moves on the offensive end. But his athleticism is what suprised me and he definitely has some defensive presence to him. He will obviously need to bulk up but what 18yr old doesnt need to do so.

I am excited to have both early commits coming to showtime in the PIT... We know the Alford Gang will get the most out of all our players,...
We have coach Steve Alford. !!

If Aget needs some inspiration to bulk up....just take a look at Cameron Barstow this year!!! It Could Happen!!!
