Phillip McDonald turns down Kansas! By: Jim Hicks (RCS Sports)
Many college coaches utilize the September contact period to get things done, and others simply get “it” done. Within 72 hours of a scheduled official visit to Kansas on the horizon, three coaches from New Mexico drove out to the home of Ann McDonald to conduct a home visit with her family which includes the Lobo’s prized target recruit, Phillip McDonald 6'5 wg (Cy Springs HS 2008). A couple hours later, the area's #1 wing guard grabbed his brother’s cell phone and dialed 713-539-1067 to relay a piece of news hot off the press.
PM: This is Phillip, I’m a Lobo!
RCS: Who is this, and you’re a what?
PM: Phillip, Phillip Michael McDonald.
RCS: Ohhh, what’s up dude – you must have something to tell me calling me this time of night.
PM: That’s what “P.M.” (his initials) stands for, afternoon or evening.
(we both laugh)
PM: Yeah, I want to let you know I committed to New Mexico just a few minutes ago.
RCS: Great news, so what made you pull the trigger today?
PM: I felt really comfortable with the coaching staff and Chris Walker was my summer coach. Plus, Coach Alford and Coach Noodles were at every single one of my games (in July).
RCS: So who gets the most credit, Coach Walker or Coach Alford?
PM: Both
RCS: Wow, so Walker really didn’t let you get on that plane (to Kansas) this weekend, huh?
PM: (Laughing) no, I’m not going.
RCS: It seems like yesterday you were riding the bench for the Houston Lynx (summer team) in the Kingwood Classic (2006), and now you’re gone Hollywood on us.
PM: I just thank everybody, my mom and my family and coaches too for everything.
RCS: Congrats dude, but I can’t believe your mom gave you Michael for a middle name.
McDonald established himself as the state’s most attractive shooter. There's not a smoother stoke in the land. This past season the long armed athletic wing led Cy Springs HS (coached by John Harmatuk) with 17.7ppg / 8.1rpg. He played the summer circuit with the adidas sponsored T Mac All Stars (coached by current New Mexico assistant, Walker), and his stock shot right to the moon. His decision to chose New Mexico will provide the Lobos with three Houston products during the freshman class of 2008. Along with McDonald, Isaiah Rusher 6’9 pf and Curtis Dennis 6’5 sg (both currently attending out of state prep schools), will join another Walker recruit from H-Town, Kem Nweke 6’10 c who’s currently in his first year in Albuquerque. I don’t know if there are awards given to assistant coaches who get it done, but there’s no doubt about it – Walker should be given some serious consideration after not letting McDonald get on that plane.

Don't bother, I can tell you I went there for a brief looksee earlier, and those yahoos were claiming that PM chose UNM because Little is going to possibly commit by the end of the week, and also started calling PM a "Plan B" guy. Geez those guys really are sour grapes. I doubt McDonald's commitment had ANYTHING to do with any other of their recruits at this point, he just loved the coaches and the environment here instead. :angry:

I can't believe they don't even mention Phillip in weeks until he commits, then claim he wasn't good enough to play there. Self thought so, or he wouldn't have offered.

I know a few KU fans that live Tucson as well. I cannot wait till UOFA plays KU this year! McDonald was not plan B no matter what the fans think. The KU coaches know what kind of talent Phillip is.

Fantastic news about PM. It sure is great to have coach Walker on our side. In 2 or three years we could have a top 10 team if all goes well. I can't remember things ever looking better for the program. At this point I'm not even worried about that last scholly, although it would be fantastic to round things out with Brown. Wow.
