What would happen to UNM if a new conference was started. Just hypothetically say the Texas schools and BSU and SDSU start a new conference, would we be invited? BYU would be invited, as would UNLV, but what about us?

A new conference doesn't get an automatic NCAA basketball bid for I don't know how many years. which will be taken into the decision and i was wondering does the big east have enough basketball teams to kick the football teams out in order to keep their name and automatic bid? If they so chose to.

Dont be a douche!
If they are going to start a new conference will it have 8 or 10 or 12? There just aren't that many schools west of the B12 to choose from. If the MWC holds fast they will have a hard time starting a new conference. BYU to that conference would raise some eyebrows IMO. it would be easier for those 5 to merge into the MWC which is already established. Tourney credits in place and a seat at the FB negotiating table etc...
There can always be negotiations as far as tv rights (see BYU requirements) and 3rd tier rights for the rest of the minions. I would be surprised to see that group try and start a new conference. Does not make sense IMO.
If texas schools were to leave the Big 12 they would start a conference together... Texas, Bring back A&M, Rice, Huston, Baylor, TCU, UT-San Antonio for basketball, and then try and get a few "independents like maybe a BYU(but tv rights would likely stop it) and ND, or add the 2 Oklahoma schools, giving them around 9-10 schools, mostly controlled by their legislature, and well Texas does things differently.... Thats the whole reason why they are still upset at A&M for going to the SEC. Not saying it would be the greatest conference but those smaller schools with the large school exposure and a Texas wide media market, would be able to grow and pick up talent....
Why would they want to start a new conference? Big Least still has plenty of money.
If you have ever been on ASSTIC Mesa they always talk about how they are the Greatest Hoops Program in the Nation and have an arrogrant attitude towards UNM. They say even if the Big Least falls apart that they will start a New Conference and the Lobos are not invited. Of course this is coming from their Lame Arse Fans though...I have NEVER seen a credible source saying this will happen but I hear the chatter that it would be an option.
I just dont see it happening though. If the Big Least falls apart and BSU and stdsu both come back then in all reality the MWC would get a slightly better TV deal and apparently it will be a performance based contract as well. To many what ifs in starting a new conference, not to say it wouldnt happen but just seems unlikely to me.
I think the more appropriate question for the thread is this: if such a conference were to form, would UNM get a Jumbotron?
I would like to think that we would but I honestly don't know. I love my university and I am so pleased with how competitive we are in practically every sport. However, as we all know, the only two sports that matter are football and to a far far lesser extent basketball. I am excited and optimistic to see what Davie can do and I believe he will have the program back to it's winning ways in a hand full of years, but would that be soon enough for the hypothetical "powers that be"? Probably not. As for our hoops program, I think any conference (including those that exist today) would be very happy to have Lobo Basketball in their confernece, however it would be more of an "icing on the cake" sort of thing rather than a "we absolutely need UNM because of their hoops program".
UNM needs to get out of the MWC period! It's time for the big time. I would love to see us in the Big 12 . It would help recruiting, tv etc...

Onto a more interesting hypothetical question, who is faster, Underdog or Speedy Gonzalez? Between the two of them, how fast could they run a 1 mile relay race?
It must be Summer. The number of Hypothetical questions in which whatever anybody thinks that they have the answer seems to be at an all time high, but then again I haven't been here from the start, so maybe this was what we did in previous years as well:-)

For sure, Julie. I haven't been through this on TLL before, either, but I think it's a sign of boredom and desperation. When BB season ends, I always look at my son and say, "What are we going to talk about now?" We have to grab at every little smidgeon of BB news, look at it from every angle, and just wear it out. BB season is just too exciting! Are we there yet?
(shakes head) Texas already has its own conference it's called the big 12 and they just inked a deal with the SEC.Originally Posted by damianshorns
That is exactly what I meant! Sorry for the vague question.
It just does not seem likely that those schools would join a MWC conference. CUSA is CONSIDERED equal to the MWC. It seems likely to me that if the all of the schools return to thier respective leagues they will see it as a digression. It isn't unheard of in these parts for a bunch of members to start a new league. I just don't think that UH and SMU will like the way CUSA expanded and same goes for BSU and SDSU to the MWC.
Those schools with the best of the rest from CUSA and the MWC would look attractive to TV. Add in a BYU and well thats a lot of points for the playoff format also.
