Breaking--- Korina Chapman touring UNM Campus at 4:30 (Monday)

The LoboLair.com has learned that former Cibola star, Korina Chapman, is touring the UNM facilities as we speak. She will meet with Coach Sanchez as well and talk with the staff. Korina is transferring from Boston College effective immediately and is currently looking for a school. Kornia was injured last year and did not play. UNM will get the first shot at her this afternoon.
Korina was widely regarded as the best player on the NMHeat Elite team team that featured many D1 players.

    (From BC site)
    Before BC
Played for Lori Stephenson at Cibola High School from 2008-2010 ... Played at Valley High as a freshman and sophomore ... Was the leading rebounder in the state (352 boards) ... Was named All-District first team twice. Third-team Metro in 2008-09 ... Preseason All-State first team selection in 2009-10 ... Winter Sports Female Athlete of the Year in 2008-09 ... Played volleyball at both Cibola and Valley.

Since she sat out last year can she play this year, if she decides to come home.

I am far from a basketball scouting expert, but I thought Korina was the bigger loss when she left NM to go elsewhere. I hope she comes to UNM--though even more I hope she is fully recovered from whatever her injury was.

According to the BC website, it was an ACL tear.

Normally a player only has 5 years to complete their eligibility. Does anyone know if a medical redshirt year plus a transfer redshirt year makes it possible to extend that to 6 years? I'm guessing the answer is "No," but I'm not sure. Sara and Nikki were both eligible to extend their eligibility to 6 years because both of their RS years were medical.

Can't she qualify for a "medical waiver"???

Happens all the time. Players transfer after injury so family is able to help take care of them.

I would hope our coaches would do everything they can so she can have as much eligibility as possible.

Seems like the point guard at BYU, Hall was there at least 7 years. I think she had three acl tears.

In order to be eligible for a medical hardship waiver, a student-athlete must have competed in
    at

    least one
contest in the first half of the season, but no more than three contests or 30%, whichever

is greater (14.2.4). The total number of contests is calculated by the schedule on the first date of

competition. Participation in Conference postseason is counted as one competition.

If a student-athlete is unable to compete at all during an entire season because of an injury or

illness, the student-athlete may not file for a medical hardship waiver. In this case, the season

would be considered a medical redshirt season.

If the student-athlete has two or more seasons of medial redshirt because of an injury or illness

(or one season of medical redshirt and one season of medical hardship), the Compliance Office

can file for an extension of the five-year clock (a sixth year) only after the student-athlete has

reached the end of the existing five-year clock.

I assume you mean a "hardship transfer waiver" (described below) which allows a player to compete immediately without sitting out two semesters.

From Transfer-101: "All NCAA rules are subject to waivers from the Subcommittee for Legislative Relief (SLR) and the NCAA staff in that area.[7] The transfer rules have a number of such waivers. The most well-known are the graduate transfer waiver (which still exists) and the hardship transfer waiver. The hardship transfer waiver is for student-athletes who are compelled to transfer because of financial hardship or an injury or illness to the student-athlete or a member of their family."

    http://www.ncaa.org/blog/2012/01/transfer-101/

For obvious reasons, the NCAA discourages transfers from applying for such waivers without a truly legitimate reason. You would certainly have to transfer to a school close to home to have any hope of getting such a waiver. I don't know if Korina will even apply. Whether she gets a waiver or not to play this year, I'm pretty sure she will be a junior in 2013-2014.

Isn't this exactly her situation? I guess the only question, has she healed anough to be able to play this year? If not, then you're right, no reason to even apply. However, as we've seen with our own players and she'd be in the same situation as Whitney Johnson as far as recovery time table from the injury as Whitney's injury occured at North Texas in mid-Nov last year.

If she will be recovered by the start of the season, I hope she or the school applies for this hardship waiver so she can be eligible immediately. With both Ebony and Tish having to sit-out and Emily not playing, we're still going to be thin on depth, so if she can be eligible, by all means, go for it!

With no dominate teams in the conf next year, if you have a chance to put yourself in a position to gain an NCAA bid by winning the MWC Tourney, I think you have to go for it!

In this age of getting the best rehab care imaginable at a D1 university, I can't see the NCAA granting a "hardship transfer waiver" (not the same as a medical redshirt) just because a player wanted to go home. The two cases I remember were Tyler Smith transferring from Iowa to Tennessee because his father had cancer and Rachel Rentschler transferring from Texas to TCU for reasons that were never specified. Neither of them had to sit out a year.

The other transfer waiver that you see granted quite a bit is the one where a player has already graduated and wants to start a masters program at a different school (presumably because of academics - wink, wink). There was a player at Stanford that played her senior year at Utah recently for that reason.

An ACL tear is no minor issue and family support can be a MAJOR factor in wanting to come back home, whether it's for physical or for mental support.

I think she would have a strong case for it.

I'm pretty sure there is no NCAA waiver needed for this one. It's part and parcel of the rules. Stephanie Gilbreath from Southern Cal to NMSU this fall will be another example.

I believe, but am not certain, that you are eligible for a medical red-shirt year if you have previously had a red-shirt year for any reason. I do not know, however, what impact a transfer year would have on this. My guess is that since she had the medical year first, she would not be eligible, but that is just a guess.

Anyone know if Korina will be enrolling at UNM? If so, will it be for the 2nd Summer Session or the Fall?
