    hypothetical team USA vs Australia

Hypothetical question for all of us (American) Lobo fans...

If Hugh Greenwood would have made the Australian Olympic team this year who would would you root for in the game vs Team USA? The Aussies because you want to see another Lobo wearing a Gold medal or Team USA because that is our country? let's hear it?

Please....Nobody should belittle anybody for voting one way or the other....

I would hope Hugh posted a 20pt, 10reb, 12ast, 3st, 2blk game....both his blocks against lebron by the way but...
USA still wins by 84. 1 point higher than the other day.

I'd rather see someone I know and am friends with, regardless of country, win a gold medal over someone from the USA whom I don't know. I don't know and am not friends with Greenwood, but his being a student at UNM would cause me to pull for Australia over the USA if he were on the team. It is Australia -- not like you're cheering for China or Russia.

I will never cheer against my country, but at the same time I would wish Greenwood to have a hell of a game though.

Anyone that says Australia should be shot! LOL! I mean seriously, I was born in the US but have family all over Mexico and if the US was playing Mexico I would still be going for USA because I am American. Im all about Lobo Nation but ya no way I would root for Australia no matter what Lobo is playing for the team.

But ya would bee nice to see Hugh get a Silver or Bronze like MRLobo said.

I used to be a semi-pro cyclist (and an early member of the UNM Lobo Cycling Team when we won our first ever national championship!!) and raced in Canada, Mexico and Australia as a representative of the US. We always had locals in those countries rooting for us because we were the 'underdogs' in the global cycling world.

I have always liked rooting for the underdog myself, so I would have to root for Australia in this case, particularly if Hughie were on the team! While I admire the abilities of the athletes on the Team USA basketball team, they are not only expected to win, they are SUPPOSED to win. That's not so exciting to me...

Of course USA, but since we're talking hypothetically anyways... If it was Team USA vs the Lobos, I would have no problem cheering against our national team.

If UNM had a track athlete from Australia competing for a gold against the Americans, you all would cheer for the Americans over the UNM student? Or is it just basketball or team sports. Maybe I'm just not that much of a fan of the NBA players. At some point doesn't the feeling of fellowship and friendship toward an athlete of another country overtake the desire for your country to win? At some level isn't the greater value here friendship across nationalities?

Jarrin Soloman, UNM and La Cueva grad, running for a medal in tonight's 4X400 relay for Trinidad and Tobago. Their heat time was even with the USA. Whom are you pulling for? I'm pulling for Soloman -- no doubt.

Don't even have to think about it. USA without question.

I'd root for Hughie at all other times though and hope he had a great game against the U.S.

That being said...the U.S. guards would eat him for breakfast. We are in a golden age of sorts for point guards in the NBA.

I'm pulling for Soloman to do his best but for the USA to bring home the gold. I would be very happy for Soloman if he won a medal. If T&T wins the gold then congrats to them they earned it. I would be very happy for Soloman regardless of the outcome.

I would also root for the US even though it would be great to see another Lobo with a medal. Primordial does make a great argument though...

Primordial... I have an electronic copy of the team wearing the Stars and Stripes NAtional Champioship jerseys on the podium. PM me and I can send it to you. I have a few others too.

Hmm, I actually may have to say Australia in this case. I can't help but find it funny that my pride in my nation could be questioned if I rooted for Hugh Greenwood, a representative of my state and university, over LeBron James, representative of narcissism and superficiality, simply because he has USA written across his chest. In fact, one could argue that national pride is a silly thing to associate with sporting events in the first place, but I won't be that bold.

Look, maybe if the Olympics mattered in anything more than bragging rights (and we already hold those when it comes to world-wide basketball), perhaps I'd feel the need to root my country on over a Lobo player. Besides, last I checked we were crushing the Aussies in the medal count anyways, so would them winning the gold really taint the worlds perception of our athletic prowess?

But since this is all hypothetical anyways and Hugh isn't playing in the olympics... Go Durant! Go Bryant (blech...)! Go LeBron (double blech...)! Go Coach K (okay, that one might be going too far).
