...UNLV have to say about this article??? ()
A must read for Lobo Fans!

GO LOBOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What do you expect us to say? It's a compliment and was just a matter of time. We talked about it on our board the day Rice was hired, that if we ever started our climb back to a national power, this would be the accusation. What else are the bluebloods going to say when we beat them for a recruit? Did you see what Kentucky did to Anthony Bennett when he cut them off his list? I'm completely comfortable that Rice is clean and working his tail off on the recruiting trail, so it's easy to sit back and enjoy these type of words, to me it just means they are feeling threatened and he is making progress. I also know people are going to keep saying these type of things no matter what, and it will only get worse with more success, so I embrace it. They do not want to share a piece of the pie, and right now Rice is taking a piece without asking, and they dont like it!
How vague do you want... "They've gotta be doing something at UNLV"... No offense but I dont get how thats a must read for you Lobo fans.. It says nothing about your school or your coach and really doesnt say anything more than UNLV has shocked coaches as to how good they are able to recruit. And its called winning, when you see UNLV beat a UNC by 10 pts on National TV thanksgiving weekend, as a recruit you cant help but want to go there, aka Birch. Thats why guys want to come to UNLV, style of play, Las Vegas, and winning traditions. Thats is all.
It's a compliment to be on this list. All of the coaches mentioned on this list have proven that they are successful except Dave Rice. Envy by other coaches plays a part in this as well. Why is Dave Rice on this list? Because he got a few blue chip recruits? UNLV's track record?
I thought it was weird how Rice was mentioned...he's coached 1 season and he's somehow a cheater? I don't buy it. Now, if UNLV starts winning the MWC championship every year, then I'll call them cheaters. Until then, I'll suspend judgement!

Here's a MUST read for Lobo fans:
UNM 65 UNLV 45
UNM 72 UNLV 67
Nuff said!
Rice only got 3 percent of the vote...what would that be 2-3 people total?
In my opinion, there should be no question in anybodies minds that Calipari cheats. If he didn't make so much money for so many people he would've been banned a long time ago.
--Stand TALL or don't stand at all
I think it's a BS article, and I'll never get the time back I wasted reading it. Not a must read at all, IMO. Talk about trying to stir the pot.
This guy has nothing but heresay from a bunch of sour grapers...
Do Calipari and Drew cheat? Probably -- but why would UNLV fans get their panties in a wad over this? They have a formerly huge national brand and a renegade reputation -- that's why they're mentioned.
But this Garry Parrish article reminds me of something stupid Murk Smith would write -- trying to make something out of nothing.
Unless you have the sources who are willing to go on record -- meh.

What did Kentucky do to Bennett after he cut them?
In what way has UNLV climbed back to a national power? A couple of (very good) recruits isn't anything close to climbing back to a national power.
I don't believe that Rice is the reason that these kids are coming to UNLV. It's got to be the assistants (like Augman). Rice is awkward and even a little bit creepy. I just don't see how he would be the one to close the deal. preface: I could be wrong about that, this is just my perception.

Let them cry about it, it only means that you are winning the recruiting battle if they cry about it. Some fans/coaches don't understand why x player will go with the other school alot of dynamic things change daily with recruiting. Sometimes players just want to be in the best situation in the future. I really don't care one way or another if coaches cry foul about UNLV getting Blue chippers. Vegas is a great basketball town (look at the WCC, PAC-12, MWC, High school tournaments, Olympic Practice/games). It's just a matter of time before people started to notice this and started to steer kids to play there. Rice has alot of connections, his assistance's coaches have lots of connections and it's helped elevate the recruiting in this league. Hopefully it helps UNM land recruits too, to make the league as a whole alot tougher and deeper.
But like they say all publicity is good publicity and if it makes a recruit think of UNLV and take a look at them because there name is on the list it's only a bonus.

In reply to the above....

1. There fan base went off on him and how terrible he is and how much they never wanted him, oh and some comments were rather racist but thats Kentucky.
2.Top 25 team all season, consistant top 25 team, Top 10 recriuting class, beat #1 team, you may not see it because you won the MWC championship, but nationally UNLV is getting the press and the attention.
3. It may not be Rice himself but it is his system and the openness he allows his players to run under. It was his system, not Rose's who made Jimmer a top pick from college. Most of the recruits have mentioned the selling point to come to UNLV was the system, not the coach. And your right, it doesnt hurt to have Augmon, a 15 yr pro and a UNLV legend, a former HC like Schoyer, and a recruiting beast like Hudson to close the deal.
I CLEARLY stated when we "start" our climb back to a national power! I didnt say we "are" a national power. We were ranked 13 straight weeks last year, then landed a top ten recruiting class, and will be ranked top 10 this preseason, so I think we have started that climb. Even if you dont agree, the national media does! Here are a couple links on Bennett/Kentucky.

I love how upset people got about this article. It is kind of funny....
I have a lot of friends who went to UNLV and we talk about this all the time. We all think that they have a great recuriting class for a a combination of factors - rice and staff are great recruiters, its VEGAS, they landed a couple of great players so of course others want to join, they have great prep programs close by etc etc.
But we all at the same time agree that we would not be surprised if it came out that UNLV was cheating in some way. Do I think they are? NO but when you bring in the type of recruiting class that they brought in eyebrows begin to be raised. I guess only time will tell. Plus if we still beat them 2-3 times this year then it won't really matter how good their recruiting class was ranked. HAHA.
In fairness for the CBS folks, I don't think there's any pot stirring...i think most of it is for fun! They're doing like a 20 part series where they asked a bunch of coaches different questions. Part one was "what player would you want on your team?" part 2 was "most underrated college coach" part 3 was "most overrated college coach" part 4 was "who do you perceive as cheating". Sure, they start conversation, but in itself, I would not say the articles are BS pot stirrers....I'd say they are fun conversation starters.
Great players attract other great players. Many of UNLV's recruits have ties to one another through their AAU Summer teams and playing against each other in the Las Vegas area and on the AAU circut. Las Vegas is a hotbed of HS talent. With their Prep Schools recruiting some of the better BB players around the country. Players from all over the country get exposed to the UNLV BB Program and Las Vegas in those AAU Tournaments. Whether we Lobo fans like it or not, UNLV has obvious built in advantages, a headstart in recruiting.
It's one thing to sign great players and yet another to get them all to jell and become a great team. UCLA's Ben Howland had an awesome recruiting class, the one that included Drew Gordon, blow up and not fulfill it's potential. This is one area where I give John "The Cheater" Calipari credit. The jury is obviously still out on Dave Rice. He is only going into his second season. He has thusfar not proven himself as a very good coach on the road for example. UNLV got a lot of play off of their big victory over what I thought was an over-rated UNC team. UNLV did not close out the season well. It seemed they faded as the games became bigger. Was it the team or was it the coach? Time will tell if Dave Rice is a good manager of a roster bulging with talent. The spotlight will be on UNLV from the start this season. Will Dave Rice rise up to meet the expectations or will he simply wilt under the heat? We will know soon enough. Jerry Tarkanian's staff at UNLV was a good collection of great assistants that could not only recruit, but coach as well. Time will tell....
You know what I say these days as a Lobo BB Fan, "The strength of this BB Program is not the talented BB players on the roster, but in fact the hard working coaching staff looking to fulfill their potential."
Silly that Rice is mentioned.
He has had a good recruiting year, whats cheating about that?
The team has much to offer athletes( history, Vegas, new system), so to say he is cheating is silly.
They said the same things when Billy Donavon went to Florida and started beating out the blue bloods for recruits like Mike Miller. Hell I would love to see Alford on that list soon, it means that recruits are buying into your program and your pulling in guys that you should have no business bringing in.
We all know Calipari is a cheater, look at his track record and all the victories and Final Four appearances that have been vacated. I am sure he cheats less now though, he's adapted to the one and done rule better than any other coach and reloads every year with top freshman class.
