I saw an article recently on the most underrated college basketball head coaches as voted on by other coaches. I agreed with some of them and not with others. But id did get me thinking who would be the most overrated and most underrated head coaches. So I decided to come up with my own list for most overrated and underrated head coaches. I picked one each from a big 6 school and non big 6 school. I will stipulate that coach Alford would win for most underrated non big 6 on this board, so let's pick someone else.
Most overrated big 6 - Rick Barnes(Texas) I came close to picking Ben Howland, but I had to pick Barnes when I looked at it more closely. He's had Tristan Thompson, LaMarcus Aldridge, DJ Augustin, TJ Ford, Chris Mihm, Daniel Gibson, and Kevin freakin' Durant all drafted in the first round. He gets his teams to the tourney seemingly every year, even the sweet 16 on occasion. But every year they fall short of expectations. He's had too much talent not to do better.
Most underrated big 6 - John Thompson III(Georgetown) He's had his team in the post season for 8 of 8 seasons, and 6 of those in the NCAA tourney. 4 times he's been a 3 seed or higher. He hasn't had near the talent that Texas has had, but he still manages to win in arguably the toughest conference in the nation. Installing the princeton offense at GT was a stroke of genius in my opinion. Not to mention he has done all of this coaching at a school where his father is a legend. That would be like Pat Knight going to coach at Indiana. It wouldn't be easy.
Most overrated non big 6 - Dave Rose(BYU). I considered Steve Fisher just because he coaches in San Diego. What took him so long to get kids to want to go there. It's freakin' San Diego. But in the end he is succeeding now. Also considered Stwe Morrill(Utah State) I think he just has a built in home court advantage, but never seems to do much away from Logan. But Rose wins because he had a great player in Jimmer and everyone thinks he's this great coach. Reality is his team was 3rd in the WCC last year and probably will be again this year.
Most underrated non big 6 - Randy Bennet(Saint Mary's). Also considered Randy Byrd(Belmont). Bennett had to deal with the beast that is Gonzaga in his conference. He couldn't recruit with them initially, so he established a pipeline to get top Australian talent and now he is on the same level with Gonzaga.
Without going with our guys I would choose Rick Majarus. I'm not sure if he is underrated because he gets good pub. But his teams are always prepared and sound.

Agreed on Majerus. I just didn't consider him underrated, but he is one hell of a coach.
