He went 1 for 5 this weekend on 4th downs in a scrimmage. HMM????
I highly doubt he'd do this....but it would be awesome to watch them play!

Shocked that Rocky is giving up on kickers. lol
I remember when he would allow a kicker to make 5 field goals per game putting the crowd to sleep like he did with all of his NFL kickers who were on the UNM team. Heck he even let Katie kick a couple field goals. The end zone and a college quarterback who could throw beyond 10yds wasn't Rocky's friend.
Rocky got his 62-65 and lasted at UNM for those 11yrs by using NFL kickers, decent RB to run offense with a strong offensive line and obviously his unique defense. But Rocky was naive when it came to QBs and the end zone.
Did he get a revelation?
NEW LOBO ORDER
WE ARE NEW MEXICO

and if he would have punted it, they would have 0 for 5. Its an interesting concept, I tried it at the youth level, but if we were on the good side of the 50, we would kick a FG, the ball travels further that way, and if it breaks the plane of the goal line its a touch back. Its a little known rule, but it throws off the opposition.

Rocky might go for it on 4th down more than the average coach but it is going to depend on what the situation is.
What if it is 4th and 16 on your own 12yd line and you have a 1pt lead with less than a minute to go in the game, if you dont make it on 4th the other team has a chip shot for a field goal to beat you. He would be a fool not to punt it, didn't the Patriots lose a game like that last year.
I think the thing was he would consider going for it while inside the opposition's 50. No way you go for 4th and 16 at your 12. That would be...ludicrous.
I don't know...might just work. It is the The East afterall.
the reason that Philosophy works for the high school coach is because HS punters usually only net like 25 yards on their punts anyway. so you might as well go for it you aren't giving up that much of the field. a good college punter can punt anywhere from 40-45 yards making it a little different. I read the same article it came out in SI a few years ago. the coach that does this also teaches math at the school and used an algorithm to figure out that going for it is more efficent... let me see if i can find it if i do i'll post it.
oh here it is.

Is this the same Rocky that punted down 5 with under a minute left from midfield?
