Care to share the name of the movie?
Thank you.
Now they say that Southern's band will be playing the 5th quarter. That's awesome if it happens.
Why can't UNM support a large band? I'm pretty sure my High School had a bigger band than UNM.
I feel like an idiot! But I am an idiot so it kinda works out!
dude I just watched drum line the other day with my kids...I can't wait to see southerns band..
I'm pysched to see the Southern Band. Years ago, the Lobos and Southern were in the same 1st & 2nd round site for the NCAA Tournament. Southern's pep band was there and they were INCREDIBLE! Looking forward to seeing the full band in person.
Another school's band playing in our stadium? What's wrong with this picture?
Lots of college bands travel on the road for football games. There just aren't many schools that think enough of us to bring their bands. Only NMSU brings there band. We can't even get our band to Las Cruces.
When are they performing? Am I going to have to stop my day drinking slightly early to get into the stadium?
On the GoLobos website it says they are playing at Halftime.
I am looking forward to seeing them, and hope our band is also looking forward to seeing them perform, and maybe learn something.....our band performances this past season were equivalent to a HS band. I was embarrassed.
So True !!
examples of what we should be doing:
you have to watch the whole thing, too much FUN for the band and the crowd!!!!
I was in marching band in high school. Went to all the competitions in state. I was never impressed with UNM's marching band. I was more impressed with NMSU's. You all know what I think of NMSU.
According to the band website, the guy in charge of the marching band is Brandon Houghtalen. If you click on his name you can email him and ask, WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON WITH THE BAND!
Everybody I know who sits on the east side thinks the band is obnoxious and annoying during the game. They have a director that talks to the band on the mic during the game and that irritates the crap out of me... and no I'm not an old grumpy man, I'm just a fan who finds a band director talking on the mic during the game to be wrong. Towards the end of the season last year there were not very many fans sitting on the east side, but the few that did can relate with what I'm saying.
I was in the UNM Band (drumline and pit) back in the 80s (and a little bit in the 90s - working on two degrees). We used to do a lot of what's posted above (under Harold Van Winkle and Greg Clemons). When Clemons left, the whole thing started spiraling down. In the early 90s they hired a guy from Boston U. Instead of recruiting for the band to build the other musical groups, he recruited wind ensemble players to build the band. The Spirit Band has not been any where near the same since. (He is still there.) The band also used to be around 200 members, plus the color guard. Since the very early 90s, the band has varied from 65 to a top of about 160 including the guard (I check every year.) Also, in the 80s, our drumline was rated as one of the top 10 in the nation and even competed for the national title (we finished 8th) and the wind ensemble was consistently nationally recognized and invited to participate in various ensemble concerts around the country. Since the recruiting style changed, there has been a fall off here too, unfortunately. I would love to see our folks get back to those days. By the way, I do not have a music degree at all. I was one of the many non-music degree oriented members who participated.

Lol, I was actually groaned for my question. Hilarious.
The UNM band will perform after the Southern Band. There is also a group cheer by YAFL cheerleaders. Turner Branch will be honored with a short ceremony after the 1st quarter. The Southern band will perform the 5th quarter after the game. That is a half hour's worth of music after the game.
Paul Krebs discussed this last night on his show.

A couple of years ago the grambling state band played in Reno at half time and after the game. They put on a great show! They are as well known as the SOUTHERN band thus bands that are known for their skill and showmanship are often asked to perform. In addition the host school often pays for their travel.
I think the only song our UNM band knows is the school fight song. They play it every three minutes. Not that I'm against UNM's fight song--but it would be nice to hear something else. How about "Call Me Maybe"?![]()
