Since Coach Chez is a Burns protégé, I wonder if she is a candidate for the back to back MWC regular season champs?

Coach Sanchez isn't going anywhere, Dark, but nice try. Hard to understand the decision as Beth is only in her middle fifties. I know the failure to make the NCAA this year really stunned her.

Health was the first thing I thought of. Same as when EE retired.

I hope that is not the case.

Being a coach in my middle 50s -- although now at the high school level after a couple of decades at small college -- that ain't young for a coach, you can get worn out with it.

What also may be the case is that by waiting until the signing date to announce, Beth is hoping to grease the skids for Jualeah Woods, the interim and her top recruiter the past several years, to take over. When you quit this week, recruits will instantly say "well why should I sign, I don't know who the new coach is going to be." The AD's had might be forced to say "why, yes, you do, it will be Coach Woods who has been calling your house for a year now...."

This could have had something to do with it. Might have been awhile before Beth could replace three pro prospects (Clements, Hopkins, and Nahinu) who all graduated.

After a program best 27 victories, it had to be a huge disappointment to be shunned by the NCAA. In doing that, the selection committee showed total disregard for the MWC women's programs. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for that. So, until that problem is remedied, the regular season championship isn't worth much because the only path to the NCAA tournament is through winning the MWC tournament championship.

Since all her family is here in NM, I see her with them at numerous events and her brother coaches El Dorado HS boy's BB......and SDSU is flat out broke......no, I don't think Coach would be interested in the SDSU job.

I agree. She chose to attend college and coach high school ball there before joining Burns staff at SDFU. However, that was a very long time ago. In addition, she has 20+ years with the NM educators retirement system.

Here's a trivia question for someone who has more time than me. (I don't know the answer.) Is there any coach in the conference that has been to the NCAA tournament more than once now? I know that Legerski has gone once (in the Pit). But the coaches with numerous trips like Elliot, Flanagan, Judkins, Mittie, and now Burns are all gone. This league just isn't what it once was. Someone needs to step up and fill these shoes.

Agree. The banquet should be more about the players than anything else--odd that the coach's situation would drive it. Coach's serious illness where the players just are not into celebrating I could comprehend, but beyond that it's difficult to fathom. Bobby Knight canceled one once when he was exceedingly unhappy with the team's effort all season, but I have seen nothing to that regard.

    We will see (or not).

I hope that SDSU does not allow the program to lapse back into medocrity. I remember a few years ago, a UNM-SDSU game was played in a 50 year old auxilary gym, with dead spots all over the floor. They had rented out the arena for more money. We do not need them to slide back to 300+ RPI again. I agree that this does not smell right.

Some thought Juleah Woods might be promoted, but she has joined Cynthia Cooper(recently hired has hc after Coop left). Looking like could be a totally new staff at SDSU?? Maybe move Tammy Reiss up? Maybe Elaine comes out of retirement?? I don't know what is happening there, but seemed like Woods would have been the natural move up with her time there. Maybe Pitboss's comment about the financial situation has something to do wit it-and who they may be able to get.

Thought just hit me. Wonder if they talk to Adrian Wiggins, who left Fresno for Mississippi and was fired there very quickly for some violations. Don't know if a school would take that chance this quick. Especially if some of San Diegos' recent news articles of rumors of sanctions proves to bear some fruit.

Fresno's former coach would be a great fit, so for the strength of the conference I would definitely like to see that happen.

The bottom line is that college administrators want basketball coaches that are proven winners even if they have character flaws because the income and prestige generated by a successful basketball program is invaluable. Anyway, the following quote describes the current state of college basketball:

"College basketball is widely regarded as the sketchiest sport with the sketchiest characters..."

    -----------------
"CBSSports.com's college basketball quartet of Gary Parrish, Jeff Goodman, Jeff Borzello and Matt Norlander spent the July recruiting period hobnobbing with nearly 100 coaches, brain-picking them on some of the sport's current issues."

Who is perceived by college coaches to be the biggest cheater in the sport?

    • John Calipari (Kentucky): 36 percent
    • Scott Drew (Baylor): 34 percent

On John Calipari: "Cal probably doesn't have to cheat now as much as he used to, but he's still the standard. The rest of us can't even deal in his league. He's the best."

On Scott Drew: "I don't even have to blink when I say the answer. He's despised by a lot of people because he comes off holier than God. Meanwhile, everyone knows he's had to cheat big-time to get the program to where it's at. If it wasn't for the God stuff he wouldn't rub people the wrong way as much."

Interesting bringing up Drew. Mulkey has Baylor on some kind of probation on the women's side. Maybe something that irks some fans, too-the holier than thou Baylor image. But, so very few women's teams even make any money. With SDSU's success the last couple years, including an NCAA win in Texas on the road a couple years ago and everyone coming back this year, still only got a few hundred people a game. And other than UCONN, women's tickets sell for a whole lot less than a men's ticket everywhere else. Maybe in a what is right now low profile conference for wbball SDSU takes a shot with Wiggins. But you probably have instant NCAA scrutiny with that hire. Still does not seem like either SDSU or Burns is going to say anything about sudden retirement days after signing a 5 year extension.

Beth Burns announced on April 12th that highly regarded 6'4" Cierra Warren was transferring from Louisville. With Burns retirement, is she still committed to SDSU?

Wiggins has signed a mult-month contract to coach Clovis East High School boys near Fresno. As we know, people don't break contracts like that to take jobs in Southern California.

I agree with you, when continue to cheat you not perform this match and coaching is very important role in a match.
