BYU junior guard Lee Cummard, the Mountain West Conference co-player of the year, will withdraw from the NBA draft and return for his senior season, BYU coach Dave Rose told ESPN.com Sunday.

Cummard's decision comes on the heels of IUPUI junior guard George Hill's announcement Saturday that he would stay in the draft and sign with an agent.

The deadline to withdraw from the June 26 draft is Monday afternoon.

Cummard, who averaged 15.8 points and 3.5 assists a game, has a chance to be a two-time MWC player of the year and lead the Cougars to the conference title yet again. (Cummard shared the player of the year honors with New Mexico senior J.R. Giddens). Cummard's teammate, junior Trent Plaisted, declared and stayed in the draft when he signed with an agent. Plaisted was second on the team in scoring at 15.6 points a game.

Rose said Cummard had good feedback but no one could make a commitment to him. Cummard wasn't selected to play in the Orlando pre-draft camp last month. But he had workouts with nearly a dozen teams. Still, Rose said the process isn't fair to the players.

"It makes them think that they've failed and that's not the deal," Rose said of deciding not to stay in the draft. "He had great feedback from the league and hopefully he'll have a great year and be in good position next year."

good news. Time for PMAC and Tony to show him whats up.

I still cant get over that BYU game in the pit. One of the most intense battles ive seen (when the refs let them play and called the same stuff on both sides.. which only happened to be a few 4 minute spans, but still a great game).

It reminded me of JR's junior season game against UNLV in the pit. It was one of those games where he was the go to guy and stood out above the rest. I think UNM lost that game too but in both games, that star player was playing his best ball and had that unstoppable aura about him. good times

He didn't deserve to be co-POY this year and I hope one of our players perhaps Tony can beat him out this year. Smart move pulling out of the draft. He would have been embarrased. Doubt he would have been drafted.

    Wise move!

Good move on his part to return for his final year, regardless if his stock drops next year. In truth there aren't many players that would not benefit from staying at the NCAA level for the full four years and coupled that with the competition level in the MWC and it is a no brainer. He will add muscle, refine his skill, and work on the things that he knows were not assets at the NBA workouts.

He should have stayed in. I have no problem with him being embarrassed.

Too bad those of us up in arms over the whole co-MWC POY can't give a collective "SEE! I TOLD YOU SO!" thumbed-nose gesture to those who didn't vote for Justin Ray.
