    Breaking- Coach Craig Neal has...

    First Post Banner
New Mexico head Coach Craig Neal has agreed to a six-year extension through 2020. The new deal will include a $950k base salary with accelerators in the second year.
This is a great move by Paul Krebs in locking up the UNM head man for the next several years.

Well-deserved for Coach, including the great work on the recruiting trail of late.

I think it's a great move but didn't Krebs say there wouldn't be a raise after 1 year?

Congrats on your well-deserved raise Coach Neal. May you become New Mexico's version of Lute Olson in terms of establishing UNM as a major player in NCAA D-1 basketball.

Inquiring minds would like to know... what's the buyout? I don't disagree with the move, mostly because things have transitioned smoothly-- though, Krebs is throwing a lot of stock into a program with a coach building in his first year with mostly new players. Eeek. Investment in long term potential. I dig UNM/Neal is the top dog in the conference.

While true, Neal is yet an unproven commodity if only from the standpoint of only having one year of "head" coaching evidence to point to. However, if you look at all aspects, the recruits that are both signing and committing to us, it's clear, he's the right guy to lead this program into the future. The real bread and butter will be whether we can continue to not only make the NCAA Tourney, but actually start winning games and advancing within the NCAA Tournament.

Is it possible, Craig Neal is New Mexico's version our Tom Izzo? Where, after several years, Neal becomes a household name across the nation to all college basketball fans? For that to happen, he will need to lead future Lobo teams to a high level of NCAA success. Appears we are getting top flight players in here, so hopefully we can finally have not only 1, but a few seasons of advancing in the tourney.

BTW, coach Neal broke the news to us in late August, so it's nice to finally see an article on it. Very happy for him and well deserved.

Deserved and great to hear! But, should a deep pockets school come calling in 2 or 3 years and make an offer like SA got, or the $2.1 million per year Lon Kruger got from Oklahoma, or the money Nebraska offered Mr. Talkative from CSU, well, you know what happens. Buyouts decrease as years pass. The rich schools can always make it worth while to jump. Hard for G5 schools to keep coaches the P5 schools really want. But congrats Coach. I hope you're here for a long, successful run!

Have to agree with this, when a school with money to throw around calls, successful coaches come. If there comes a time when a P5 school offers wheelbarrows full of money to Neal I think it would be hard for him to turn that down. In the mean time I think he has to accomplish something big for that to happen so here is to hoping he does something big at UNM.

Krebs is a wise man and can see the writing on the wall. Its very apparent the huge leap in recruiting we have taken since Coach Neal took the main seat.

I honestly am extremely impressed with what is coming in not only this year but in the years to come. Lobo Nation should genuinely be very excited for this upcoming and following years.

To add to that I honestly am not worried about a school offering Coach Neal a job at a bigger school. Not including Kentucky, Duke, Wake Forest, or UNC I wouldn't worry about ever losing him. I think he understands what he has at UNM and well he also understands how hurt we were when Alford left.

I do not know. Any school that does not have a good buyout that both protects the coach as well as the institution can not compete as a Top 40 program. So, well done Krebs and good for you Noodles!

Congrats to Coach Neal, well deserved and he proved he is a down to earth coach who can talk the family talk with recruits and most important bring in quality assistant coaches. I really do not give a HOOT about any buy out clause in Coach Neal's new deal, I want a sweet sixteen winner. Under Neal we have the best chance to get this done. Players see the proof is in the " puddin "-you can go to the NBA from UNM. GO LOBOS. Cullen be our shooter.

Is there really any gain in this for UNM?

The buyout is still a million for both sides apparently. There is nothing really very financially locking in this, just as in the last change to the contract. Coach is getting more money, and he can still leave for a million bucks at any time. Lobos get ???? Shouldn't coaches side of the buyout cost have gone up if UNM upped his annual pay and years? (Although with the buyouts the same, years just don't seem that binding do they?)

I think as others have posted, he seems to be doing a really good job and you just have to hope is you treat him really fair and he is successful that he can build his own empire here and want to stay here.

I don't understand the money numbers about the profits of the program, given the ADs own words that the new Alford contract was behind some price increases according to the AD. I think what ever money keeps getting made, will keep getting spent. That is why student fees go up..etc

You mean like Mark Few and Shaka Smart have turned down offers? There is precedent for coaches turning down the P5. More money doesn't always equate to better job and working conditions.

A million dollar buyout is a lot. Which is nice for us if he ever decides to bail. The average buyout for a coach at most schools is about half of that. Also the talk of raising prices was for the new contract alford was going to get which would pay him $1.2 million plus a year. This new contract that Neal has gotten is actually $25,000 short of what we originally hired alford at. That contract was $975,000 per year. Money wise we are completely fine.
