I found it to be quite disturbing. I can tell you all with a 100 percent degree of certainty that without high school sports, I would have dropped out of high school. I am as sure of that as anything in my life. I actually contemplated dropping out several times but I loved sports so much that I just couldn't leave.
I was fortunate enough to get a basketball scholarship and that in combination with my girlfriend (13 years later and she is still with me as my wife) getting pregnant finally straightened me out. Now I have two degrees and working on a third graduate degree with a great job. Without high school sports I would've very well turned out to be a drug dealer (seriously).
My eldest son starts middle school this year and he doesn't even have PE his first semester and only a couple of times a week in his second semester. I wouldn't actually have a problem with that if he had a challenging, diverse academic curriculum but it's actually pretty weak and bare boned. I am worried about the future of my country and my family.

NMstorm you have to be involved in your sons academic schedule. If you don't get involved then it's hard to complain. Email me if you want some tips.
I am completely involved in all aspects of all three of my childrens lives. However, I don't hae control over the school systems curriculum.
My oldest son, for example, won the spelling bee at his school last year, finished on the honor roll all year long and can build a computer from scratch with no help from me including installing all of the software. You totally missed my point.

The day is coming soon when it will all be club sports, not sponsored by schools. I see lots of good and lots of bad in that.
