Sporting News staff reports
Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean has received a contract extension through the 2017-18 season, the Indianapolis Star reports.
The extension matches the length of the deal Crean had at Marquette before moving to Indiana in the wake of the Kelvin Sampson recruiting scandal. Crean originally had signed an eight-year, $18 million deal with Indiana.
"As soon as the long-form contract is done and finalized, it will be released," Crean told the Star. "To date, I'm comfortable with the progress and look forward to its completion."

Wow and some people thought we were jumping the gun by offering Alford an extension after one season. Crean hasn't even coached a game and he gets an extension.
...and on the heels of another player transferring.
Coach Crean might or might not work out for Indiana. I think he likely will. But all he has done so far is run off even the marginal players left on the roster. I think he wants to be able to blame the former coach for all losses over the next 3 or 4 seasons. Indiana fans will likely fall for it. They are not known for being very bright. Throwing more money at a coach that has not even won his first game is yet another risky monetary move by the Indiana higher ups. I assume the Indiana athletic department is overflowing with cash.
It's always Lobo roundball season . . .
Maybe this was part to the deal to get him to come in the first place. They needed to match the deal he had at Marquette but could not give him the length of the contact unless they handled it this way. Who knows . . . .
